Water Is Wet: Rubin Deems Trump-Russia Worse Than Watergate, Lobbies for Dems to Win Midterms

April 10th, 2018 10:20 PM

In the latest example of a zany rant from a fake conservative, Washington Post columnist and MSNBC political analyst Jennifer Rubin reacted to the Michael Cohen raid on Tuesday’s All In by declaring that the Trump-Russia probe is worse than Watergate and that Democrats must win in November to defeat Republicans who have violated their oaths of office.

Host Chris Hayes teed up this insanity, bemoaning that “there is an attempt by the Republicans...to be just sort of cordon this off like Trump is nuts — the way a Trump tweet happens” in regards to him mulling whether to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and/or Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein.

“That just seems so preposterous in the case of FBI raid on the party's deputy national finance chairman,” Hayes added in reference to Cohen.

Rubin obviously agreed, telling Hayes that “[y]ou have to pinch yourself because it is so outlandish” in addition to “the number of plots and the number of areas in which there is abject corruption” on the part of the President.

“All of this is a scheme of corruption and personal manipulation and self-enrichment that we have not had that really does exceed Watergate. And the Republicans are just, you know, whistling through the graveyard here thinking that they can keep their heads down,” Rubin bemoaned, declaring that an investigation without any official conclusion that it’s worse than Watergate.

The faux Republican gleefully predicted that if “Trump is still there” (read: not removed from office), “it's going to be a bloodbath because the Republicans are very, very vulnerable to the charge that they are not exercising any oversight.”

She wrapped up her eye-rolling hot take by deeming Republicans to not have honored their oaths of office and thus Democrats must be elected to replace them:

They are complicit in this corruption. Not just in Russia but all these other financial schemes. They have no interest in fulfilling their obligations under their oaths and if you want real oversight, you got to the elect Democrats. That's a pretty compelling argument.

Hayes picked up on Rubin’s doomsday talk, telling Business Insider’s Josh Barro: “I believe there's going to be some crisis point, right? There's some standoff between which institutions hold and I, you know, which I think will happen before the midterms, frankly.”

And this is supposedly supposed to represent conservatism at The Washington Post with her “Right Turn” blog? Give me a break. This charade continues to go on and on, but it’s only getting more ludicrous each time she makes remarks like she did on Tuesday night or flip-flopping on an issue solely because it lines up with the Trump administration.

CHRIS HAYES: Jennifer, there is an attempt by the Republicans on the Hill and in the party more generally to be just sort of cordon this off like Trump is nuts — the way a Trump tweet happens, right? It's like, “oh, he tweeted about Steph Curry” and everyone spends their day going “eh, I didn't read the tweet” or “eh, you know, that's the President.” That just seems so preposterous in the case of FBI raid on the party's deputy national finance chairman.

JENNIFER RUBIN: It is. You have to pinch yourself because it is so outlandish. You're exactly right, Chris. Not only that, but you know, the number of plots and the number of areas in which there is abject corruption, you have $150,000 payment from an Ukrainian oligarch to Trump Foundation. We have instances of his lawyers trying to put the screws on the Panamanian government for Trump's benefit. All of this is a scheme of corruption and personal manipulation and self-enrichment that we have not had that really does exceed Watergate. And the Republicans are just, you know, whistling through the graveyard here thinking that they can keep their heads down. Maybe they'll get away with that, but I suspect if they are still there and Trump is still there in November, it's going to be a bloodbath because the Republicans are very, very vulnerable to the charge that they are not exercising any oversight. They are complicit in this corruption. Not just in Russia but all these other financial schemes. They have no interest in fulfilling their obligations under their oaths and if you want real oversight, you got to the elect Democrats.

HAYES: Right.

RUBIN: That's a pretty compelling argument.

HAYES: And I think — I mean, I think we’re going to hit — I believe there's going to be some crisis point, right? There's some standoff between which institutions hold and I, you know, which I think will happen before the midterms, frankly.

JOSH BARRO: Oh, we've gotten, what, 65 percent of the way to the midterms.

HAYES: Yeah.

BARRO: Yeah, I mean, you know, a year ago, I would have bet on it happening by now, so I don't know. I think, you know —

HAYES: That's true.

BARRO: — there's not that much time left to run out on the clock. We might get there before the midterms.

HAYES: Well, here’s my point, though, right? So, the ideas of like — the idea of sort of like that members of Congress, Republicans, they all had this line today about like, “well, don’t — he won't fire Mueller, so don't worry about it.
