Stewart Claims McConnell Smiled In Hospital Photo Because Only He Had Insurance

Monday was a rough night for part-time late night comedy hosts when it came to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization. On ABC, Jimmy Kimmel Live! substitute Ike Barinholtz portrayed McConnell as a health care hypocrite for receiving care when allegedly denying it to others.   Similarly, Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart claimed that McConnell was smiling in his “proof of life” photo because, thanks to him, he had health insurance and nobody else in the hospital did.

During the midst of a spiel about how surprised he found it that Sen. Lindsey Graham died before McConnell, Stewart put up a photograph of McConnell in his hospital bed and sarcastically quipped, “McConnell was the one who suddenly disappeared for a month, and nobody heard from, to the point where the governor of his own state was asking for proof of life. Which, coincidentally, we got yesterday! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you totally believable evidence that Mitch McConnell is not only alive, but the happiest boy in the hospital.”

He continued by adding, “He's the happiest boy in the hospital! That's the smile of a Make-a-Wish kid whose wish was that everyone else in the hospital lost their health insurance due to his [bleep] policies.”

Stewart was talking about McConnell, but he could have been talking about any Republican who needs medical treatment. One of Stewart’s problems with the Democratic Party is that it is not left-wing enough on health care. As a longtime supporter of a single-payer system, is he a hypocrite for not putting himself on a hideously long waitlist for his health care? Of course, Stewart would rather not have to think about that because economics can be complicated and not easy for a comedian to understand. He and Barinholtz would rather just triumphantly claim that you either agree with them or you want people to suffer.
