CNN on Fox: 'The Problem With All of This Is We Have Free Speech'

July 23rd, 2021 4:04 PM

On Thursday's CNN Newsroom, Carl Cameron and host Alisyn Camerota, both a couple of former Fox News personalities, questioned the motives of their former employer's vaccine advocacy, while Cameron was so disgusted with Fox and conservative media's vaccine coverage that he declared, "The problem with all of this is we have free speech and it doesn't entirely include lying."

Just think about that sentence. "The problem with all of this is we have free speech."

Camerota noted that while some Fox hosts have stepped up vaccine advocacy, "Obviously not all the hosts feel that way." After naming Tucker Carlson as one such example, she wondered if it was strictly a business decision, "Do you think in part they just did the math and realized some of the people most at risk are some of their own viewers in some of the reddest states are also the least vaccinated?"

Cameron agreed that it was, "I think they recognize it's bad politics to put your voters in jeopardy and that's what they've done, particularly with the conservative media on cable, and that’s Fox, and One America Network, Newsmax, and things like that, but also on social media."

Not content to ignore that the unvaccinated include people other than conservative cable news viewers, Cameron then seemed to suggest those networks don't have free speech rights, "The problem with all of this is we have free speech and it doesn't entirely include lying. It's a cliche, but we say you can't scream fire in a crowded movie house, because that’s disturbing the peace and that’s a misdemeanor and you can get arrested for it."

The vaccines are safe and effective, but the reason that Cameron is dead wrong is because the government can not be trusted to tell the difference between who is lying and who is just disagreeing with government orthodoxy or with Carl Cameron.

CNN Newsroom with Alisyn Camerota and Victor Blackwell

3:35 PM ET

ALISYN CAMEROTA: Obviously not all the hosts feel that way. Tucker Carlson has not gotten on board with whatever this new attitude we hear from some of the hosts about the vaccinations and so do you think in part they just did the math and realized some of the people most at risk are some of their own viewers in some of the reddest states are also the least vaccinated?

CARL CAMERON: I think it's a little bit of that. I also think they recognize worldwide people who get vaccinated are better off and sooner or later their constituents, their followers, whether it's social media, cable television, all of it, that it's just simply wrong and that the time has come to get vaccines. I think they recognize it's bad politics to put your voters in jeopardy and that's what they've done, particularly with the conservative media on cable, and that’s Fox, and One America Network, Newsmax, and things like that, but also on social media. The problem with all of this is we have free speech and it doesn't entirely include lying. It's a cliche, but we say you can't scream fire in a crowded movie house, because that’s disturbing the peace and that’s a misdemeanor and you can get arrested for it.
