Harwood Floats Baseless Conspiracy Theory of Possible Investigations Into Schiff, Romney

February 8th, 2020 3:07 PM

CNN White House correspondent and self-appointed guardian of the truth John Harwood joined CNN Newsroom co-host Jim Sciutto on Friday to baselessly speculate that President Trump may open up "full-scale investigations" into Adam Schiff and Mitt Romney as revenge for their roles in his impeachment.

Hawrood and Sciutto began by condemning Trump for forcing Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman out of the national security council with Harwood declaring, "We know that this is a president who wants to punish his enemies." What actual reports on Vindman's future say is the he's reassigned to the Pentagon, a fact that Harwood and Sciutto found convient to ignore. That's not exactly some despotic purge.

Harwood then wondered, after Vindman, who was next on Trump's hit list, "And so as I was saying a moment ago, what happens now? Is there an investigation -- full-scale investigation of Hunter Biden and Joe Biden? Is there a full-scale investigation of Adam Schiff or Mitt Romney?"

Or maybe instead of baseless speculation about what Trump will do, CNN could see if there was anything nefarious going on with the Bidens. Isn't that what he have a vibrant free press for?

Justifying his conspiracy theory, Harwood added, "You can't rule any of these things out because this is a president who doesn't recognize political norms or ethical or constraints of right and wrong." That essentially says any paranoid conspiracy about Trump is justified because he's Trump.

After Harwood lamented that Republicans are not going to "constrain" him, Sciutto ended the segment by thanking Harwood for, "telling it like it is"

Here is a transcript for the February 7 show:

JOHN HARWOOD: Yes. Now, in fairness, it certainly got to be uncomfortable for Alexander Vindman to continue working in the White House, having taken risks that he did to go testify before the Congress. But we know that this is a president who wants to punish his enemies. And so as I was saying a moment ago, what happens now? Is there an investigation -- full-scale investigation of Hunter Biden and Joe Biden? Is there a full-scale investigation of Adam Schiff or Mitt Romney? You can't rule any of these things out because this is a president who doesn't recognize political norms or ethical or constraints of right and wrong. So we'll see. And it is certainly clear from that event in the White House yesterday that Republican senators are not going to be the ones who constrain him because they were applauding those remarks he gave.

JIM SCIUTTO: John Harwood telling it like it is at the White House. Thanks very much.
