Yet another twisted cultural debate is now raging among the liberal left. Can white kids wear dreadlocks without being accused of cultural appropriation?
Taking its cue as usual, Fusion, the hyper-left sister network of Univision, decided to go after Justin Bieber for just that choice of hair style. Fusion ties its derision of Bieber’s dreadlocks to this very matter of cultural appropriation.
What is cultural appropriation you ask? According to urbandictionary.com it is “the ridiculous notion that being of a different culture or race (especially white) means that you are not allowed to adopt things from other cultures. This does nothing but support segregation and hinder progress in the world. All it serves to do is to promote segregation and racism.”
We’re not bothered by white kids opting for dreadlocks because they feel it is anti-establishment, it sets them apart, or the Rastafarian look will score them a date with a like-minded Occupy Wall Street type seeking safe spaces to discuss the evils of corporate greed.
The thing is, liberal minorities are bothered by it. Isn’t it incoherent that “open-minded” liberals celebrate those who forsake their biological gender to assume another gender identity that is not their own, but throw shade on someone growing dreadlocks if they are not black? It smacks of selective outrage that only serves to advance stereotypes.
Leave it to Fusion to jump into the fray, even if it means eating their own.
Way to go Fusion, you forced us to have to defend Justin Bieber.
I hope you’re happy with yourselves.
