Apple Says It's 'Monitoring' Challenges to 'Uniquely Restrictive' Abortion Law in Texas: Report

Apple is reportedly "monitoring" challenges to the new pro-life law in Texas, according to an internal memo posted on Sept. 16, according to TechCrunch.

The law prohibits abortions after 6 weeks.

Apple has reportedly weighed in on the situation in an internal memo to employees, according to TechCrunch:

“We are actively monitoring the legal proceedings challenging the uniquely restrictive abortion law in Texas. In the meantime, we want to remind you that our benefits at Apple are comprehensive, and that they allow our employees to travel out-of-state for medical care if it is unavailable in their home state. If you need help in navigating your care or that of your dependents, your health plan carrier can confidentially assist you.

"Your health and well-being remain our highest priority, and we will continue to do all that we can to ensure that you and your families have access to the care that Apple provides.”

While Apple did not clarify specific measures it would be taking to actively oppose the bill, the statement does make clear that it supports “employees’ rights to make their own decisions regarding their reproductive health.”

Other Big Tech companies have openly opposed the new law.

Salesforce recently told thousands of employees that it would relocate employees who want to leave Texas because of the law.

“These are incredibly personal issues that directly impact many of us — especially women,” Salesforce told employees in its Slack channel. “We recognize and respect that we all have deeply held and different perspectives. As a company, we stand with all of our women at Salesforce and everywhere.”

Lyft said the law is "incompatible with people’s basic rights to privacy, our community guidelines, the spirit of rideshare, and our values as a company."

“We want to be clear: Drivers are never responsible for monitoring where their riders go or why. Imagine being a driver and not knowing if you are breaking the law by giving someone a ride,” the statement said. “Similarly, riders never have to justify, or even share, where they are going and why. Imagine being a pregnant woman trying to get to a healthcare appointment and not knowing if your driver will cancel on you for fear of breaking a law.”

Uber created a legal fund to defend drivers “put at risk” by the law.

"Drivers shouldn’t be put at risk for getting people where they want to go. Team Uber is in too and will cover legal fees in the same way," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi tweeted.
