‘Real O’Neals’ Actress Bashes Her ‘Homophobe’ Character

For those still not convinced that The Real O’Neals, ABC’s new primetime show is anti-Catholic, here is the smoking gun.

Martha Plimpton, the actress who plays Mrs. O’Neal commented in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that her character has fundamental psychological issues stemming from none other than her faith.

The Real O’Neals paints a picture of an Irish Catholic family whose members’ various demons come to light at the beginning of the show.

Martha Plimpton stars as Eileen O'Neal, a mom struggling comically with an impending divorce, her 16-year-old son’s announcement that he is gay, and other problems with her kids.

“The character I play is a homophobe,” said Plimpton. “But she's a homophobe because she's based her entire value system on her faith, a thing that's given her an enormous sense of purpose, stability and spiritual comfort.”

This is a problem, apparently, since, “when you rely on something like that, and it tells you that anyone who is gay is going to burn in hell, you don't want your son to burn in hell. That’s really where Eileen is coming from.”

It may not surprise many to learn that Plimpton has a poor understanding of Catholicism. The faith does not hold that gay people go to hell, but it does teach that is a grave sin to perform homosexual acts.

When asked about her response to accusations that the show bashes Catholics, Plimpton remarked, “When anybody hears that it's going to be a show about a Catholic family dealing with their gay son, they assume that we’re going to be making fun of Catholics, and it’s just not the case. What we’re making fun of is the fear.”

The actress was presumably referring to Catholics’ “fear” of homosexual lifestyle. On the contrary, the Catholic teaching on homosexuality is not based on fear but on a correct understanding of human nature and sexuality.

The show is loosely based on the life of extreme anti-catholic Dan Savage, whose x-rated blog purports to provide helpful gay sex advice. Savage was raised Catholic but has devoted himself to hosting pornography festivals and bashing conservative values.

Plimpton is outspoken and often crass in her comments bashing conservative values, especially the pro-life movement. She started a nonprofit, A Is For, whose mission is to remove the stigma of abortion. The actress even modelled a “Shout Your Abortion” dress in March.

Plimpton went on to insist that the show was well-intentioned.

“It's not coming from a place of hatred. It’s my hope that when people see the show, they’ll understand that we’re not out to humiliate anyone who is coming from this perspective.”

In other words, the show offers to help Catholics with their limited and rather stupid world-view.
