Amy Schumer: Sorry, New Movie Needs 'More Trans People in It'

It seems everyone in entertainment media is trying to out virtue signal everyone else in the field and at the moment it appears Amy Schumer is back on top of the Hollywood social justice food chain.

The Trainwreck actress, and politically outspoken comedian (to an exasperating degree) recently sat down for an interview with Time to discuss her new movie about girl power, body positivity, and all-around loving oneself. Her new movie, titled I Feel Pretty, is about a woman who has low self-esteem, weight issues and the overall inability to find a date. But a movie about coming to terms with such things is not political enough for Schumer.

Schumer, who stars in and produces the movie, stated, “It’s not a perfect movie. It would be great if my role had been played by a woman of color and there were more trans people in it, more people with disabilities.” Though she added that “it’s a step in the right direction, I hope.”

Is Schumer aware that it’s a little late for an April Fool’s joke? Oh, nevermind. This is Hollywood we’re talking about. Of course, she’s serious. The movie’s premise follows the low-confidence woman, played by Schumer, who receives a sort of amnesia following a traumatic head injury. Schumer’s character wakes-up with a miraculous new self-confidence, one that makes her sincerely believe that she’s as beautiful as a supermodel.

Anyone can guess where the movie goes from here. Schumer’s head injury is the best thing that’s ever happened to her, and in the trailer, she struts around town in new clothes and with a fresh, unflinching attitude. Her confidence inspires her to assert herself as the potential star of a modeling agency, and date all sorts of guys she never even had the nerve to talk to before.

Still for someone Time magazine describes as currently “more interested in talking about overt agendas,” this simple story about female self-acceptance in a photoshopped world is not real enough. At least not in Schumer’s world where “inclusion rider” is the new exclusive club.
