Senator Sanders Warns Tech Giants: Pause ‘Cataclysmic’ AI Development – or We Will

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has sent a letter to three companies leading the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) warning them that – if they don’t pause their development of AI until they get the dangerous technology under control – Congress will force them to pause it.

“Almost every day, there is a new story about how your companies are losing control of the AI technology you are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results,” Sen. Sanders wrote Monday in a letter to OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg.

Sanders provided recent examples of how rogue AI users successfully used the technology to create new viruses and hack into another company’s computers.

Despite previous commitments to pause AI development in the face of potential and past dangers, “your companies are still racing ahead” developing “technology that nobody can fully understand, predict or control,” Sanders tells the tech moguls:

“Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster. Stop building machines that humans cannot control.”

Sanders concludes by warning that, if they don’t voluntarily pause AI development, Congress will force them to do so:

“Let me be very clear: If you do not take appropriate action now, my colleagues and I in the U.S. Senate will.”
