January 5th, 2010 1:38 PM
Despite six months of positive economic growth, Treasury collections are continuing what is now a serious two-year downward slide. In August, the Congressional Budget Office projected that collections during the fiscal year that will end on September 30, 2010 will be $2.264 trillion (PDF; page 2 at link). That's $159 billion, or about 7.5% higher, than fiscal 2009's final total of $2.105…

December 29th, 2009 4:42 PM
Wow: David Shuster really lets it all hang out on Twitter . . .In current tweets, the MSNBCer accuses Karl Rove of "hypocrisy," calls conservatives "wingnuts," claims Baucus wasn't wasted, and denounces Drudge as "repulsive" for supposedly suggesting otherwise. Excerpts from Shuster's current Twitter feed [screencap after the jump]:Thank you Wingnuts! By mentioning my tweets, you are bringing…
Relief Without Limits: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Get Blank Checks; NYT P
December 27th, 2009 9:42 AM
On Thursday, the Treasury Department issued a press release, called "Update on Status of Support for Housing Programs." Its fourth paragraph reads as follows: At the time the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) placed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into conservatorship in September 2008, Treasury established Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements (PSPAs) to ensure that each firm maintained a positive…
AP's Babington Plays Obama/Dem Party Mouthpiece, Ignores CBO 'Double-C
December 26th, 2009 8:22 AM
The Associated Press should seriously consider renaming itself "Associated Dems" or "Associated Leftists." This morning, the AP's Charles Babington uncritically relays the latest Democratic Party talking point about its statist health care plan that has been passed in two very different forms in the House and Senate. The supposed point is that anyone who voted to create Medicare Part D in 2003…

MSNBC's Shuster Continues to Ignore Dem Senator's Incendiary 'Aryan' S
December 22nd, 2009 6:37 PM
Yesterday, joined by substitute co-host Lynn Berry, MSNBC's David Shuster wondered of Sen. Tom Coburn, "what was he thinking," in regards to a comment the Oklahoma Republican made on the Senate floor Sunday which Shuster interpreted in the worst possible light. Coburn, Shuster suggested to his "Big Picture" audience, was hoping a Democratic senator would drop dead before the 1 a.m. cloture vote.…
MSNBC: GOP ‘Grinches’ Stealing Christmas, Being ‘Mean’ Over Ob
December 22nd, 2009 3:39 PM
Early in the 1PM ET hour on MSNBC on Tuesday, anchor Norah O’Donnell pressed New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg on Republican efforts to slow down passage of ObamaCare: “You guys are going to probably be there late on Christmas Eve....And a lot of people say it’s the Republicans’ fault, that you could easily go ahead and move forward with this legislation. Are you the Grinch that stole Christmas?”…
Economy Not Impressing? Never Fear, the AP's Jeannine Aversa Is Here
December 22nd, 2009 2:55 PM
Uncle Sam's Bureau of Economic Analysis today revised economic growth in the third quarter downward a second time. After originally estimating annualized growth of 3.5% in October and then reducing it to 2.8% in November, the bureau's "third estimate" issued today came in at 2.2%. If that "third estimate" term seems odd, it's because this is only the second quarter the BEA has labeled its…
MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' Runs Sen. Whitehouse's 'Aryan' Accusation -- Bar
December 22nd, 2009 12:36 PM
The Republican minority in the Senate found an unlikely defender today: MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host, Mika Brzezinski.Yesterday, the Brew Crew played the video for the Democrat talking point attack on Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), but omitted the ghoulish statement by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.):They [the GOP] are desperate to break this president. They have ardent supporters who are nearly…
AP Word Games: 'Pork' and 'Earmarks' Transformed Into 'Local Projects
December 22nd, 2009 12:07 PM
In connection with the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending monstrosity signed into law last week, an unbylined AP report on December 16 told us the following (bolds are mine throughout this post): Most Republicans opposed the bill, citing runaway federal spending. They also pointed to an estimated $3.9 billion for more than 5,000 local projects sought by lawmakers from both parties. The AP writer…

December 21st, 2009 2:47 PM
Appearing Monday on MSNBC during the 10AM ET hour, CNBC White House correspondent John Harwood worked to whip up support for the health care bill passed by Senate Democrats while slamming its liberal opponents: “...so much of the commentary I’ve heard has been really idiotic. Liberals who want universal health care ought to be thanking Harry Reid for getting this thing done...”Speaking to anchor…
WaPo Reader Calls Out Lib Columnist on Filibuster Hypocrisy
December 21st, 2009 1:09 PM
Caught this in the Washington Post's "Letters to the Editor" section today. Good on the Post for printing this letter from a reader who caught liberal columnist E.J. Dionne in the act of hypocrisy: E.J. Dionne Jr. ["Democratic fratricide," op-ed, Dec. 17] views the Senate as a "dysfunctional and undemocratic partisan hothouse," presumably because of the ability of 41 senators to prevent a bill…
