Reality TV star Kim Kardashian discovered a new way to draw enough outrage to keep her name in the news. In a cover story for Interview magazine, Kardashian posed as liberal “icon” Jackie Kennedy, and that drew anger on Twitter.
The funniest headline on this stunt came from the British site Metro.co.uk: “Kim Khardashian accused of blasphemy after Jackie Kennedy-inspired photo shoot with [daughter] North West.”
In other words, Jackie Onassis is God! Merriam-Webster defines “blasphemy” as
1A. The act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God accused of blasphemy
1B. The act of claiming the attributes of a deity
2. Irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable
Apparently, to Kennedy fans, Jackie is not a goddess, but merely a legend. One tweeted: “All i'll say is @KimKardashian doing a photo shoot trying to compare herself to Jackie Kennedy is #BLASPHEMY. Jackie is a #LEGEND Kim isnt.” Another tweeted: “This is blasphemy! Kim K vs Jackie O?!There's no comparison. And why is she so "tanned"?! You know she likes to color coordinate”. That's a slam suggesting Kim darkened her skin tone for the shoot to match her biracial daughter North West, age 4.
A milder version of this thought on Twitter was “When we start comparing Kim Kardashian to Jackie Kennedy we have officially failed as a country.”
At least Kim is a major Democrat, so she has that affinity with the Kennedy clique. She just told Harper's Bazaar Arabia "anyone could run the US better. My daughter would be better. We’ve worked so hard to get to where we were and to have so many things that we were so proud of in our country, to just literally revert backwards is the most frustrating thing."
If this photo shoot is "blasphemy," imagine how they would react to a conservative take? As in, why would Kim Kardashian want to imply she enabled/looked the other way while her famous husband committed adultery all around her? And her husband encouraged one young mistress to perform oral sex on his buddies? That doesn't sound "iconic."
