Meyers vs. Meyers: Watch the Hack Hypocrite Suddenly Care About Endless Wars

April 15th, 2021 12:32 PM

Late Night hack Seth Meyers pretends to be a comedian, but he’s really just a shill for the left, shifting his nightly harangues to whatever his Democratic bosses would like. So it’s no surprise that he’s suddenly excited about pulling troops out of Afghanistan, but wasn’t when Donald Trump was president.

On Wednesday, Meyers assailed Republicans for questioning the timing of Biden’s troop pull out, complaining, “Seriously, what do these guys want? A permanent military presence in Afghanistan? It's been 20 years. Nothing that goes on for that long stays good.” Awkwardly, the NBC host accused others of hypocrisy:

Given that Republicans pretended to suddenly care about ending endless wars during the Trump years, you'd think they would have been thrilled when President Biden announced that the U.S. would finally withdraw troops from Afghanistan by September.

So one would assume that Meyers hailed Donald Trump’s plan to pull all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2020? On Friday August 2, 2019, NBC News led with this breaking story: “Trump wants to pull all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by 2020 election, officials say.” But Meyers was silent on his show the following week.

On September 9, 2020, as the President sounded very anti-war, Meyers mocked Trump’s efforts:

DONALD TRUMP: I'm not saying the military's in love with me, the soldiers are. The top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.

MEYERS: Yeah, man, totally. Everyone believes you're an anti-war activist. I can totally see you marching on Washington in the '60s with a beard and tea shade glasses, holding a sign and smoking a joint. "It's like Lennon says, 'Give peace a chance.' I mean, I've already given peace a chance hard pass for me. Not a fan of the peace." Second, this is an especially infuriating lie, coming from a guy who has repeatedly touted billions in arms sales to a brutal regime in Saudi Arabia, vetoed a bill to end U.S. involvement in the horrific war in Yemen, massively expanded bombing campaigns across the world including a record number in Afghanistan, increased the Pentagon's budget for the fifth consecutive year to the point where it's now near now Iraq-war levels.

On Wednesday, Meyers fumed, “What all of this shows is that the Republican Party has no actual ideological principles, no core beliefs other than racism, paranoia and feigned cultural outrage against anything they perceive as even a mild infringement on their right to do whatever the hell they want.”

Meyers is one to talk about not having ideological principles. If he was so supportive of bringing the troops home, where was the host in 2019 or 2020? In reality, the NBC hack is nothing more than a Democratic mouthpiece.

Late Night With Seth Meyers

SETH MEYERS: So, given that Republicans pretended to suddenly care about ending endless wars during the Trump years, you'd think they would have been thrilled when President Biden announced that the U.S. would finally withdraw troops from Afghanistan by September. 20 years after the war began. And it is insane that this has not happened yet the war in Afghanistan should have ended a long time ago last time we were in a war this long, it starred Alan Alda.

...

MEYERS: Seriously, what do these guys want? A permanent military presence in Afghanistan? It's been 20 years. Nothing that goes on for that long stays good, with the exception of "Law & order SVU which if Biden keeps his word, will run longer than the U.S. war in Afghanistan congratulations to you all, but bad news, you've been reassigned. So sometimes Republicans pretend to be anti-corporations and they oppose raising taxes on corporations sometimes they pretend to be anti-war, then they oppose ending wars. What all of this shows is that the Republican Party has no actual ideological principles, no core beliefs other than racism, paranoia and feigned cultural outrage against anything they perceive as even a mild infringement on their right to do whatever the hell they want.
