Chris Matthews: It’s Like the McCarthy Hearings! ‘Cold War!’ Trump Wants ‘Violence!’

November 15th, 2019 12:36 PM

MSNBC host Chris Matthews on Friday alternated between hearing a call for “violent” acts from the President and linking the whole thing to the McCarthy hearings (with Donald Trump in the role of Joe McCarthy). Regarding Donald Trump’s tweets during the impeachment hearings about former Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, the Hardball host saw “the language of violence.”

But there's something in the personal chemistry between this President and that former ambassador. When you find out from your superior, 'Get on the next plane.' That's the language of violence. 'There's something going to happen to you if you don't get on the next plane. Get your baggage, get out of town.'

Chris Matthews LOVES to compare people to Joe McCarthy. It’s one of his go-to insults. So, naturally, he did that on Friday.

Remember the McCarthy hearings? Remember what McCarthy did when he tried to destroy that young reporter [sic]  lawyer, and that's when Joe Walsh jumped on him and said, “Until this time, I didn't realize how indecent you are.” Somebody should say to the President, if he has anybody him in the loop that could say it, “shut up.”

Matthews jumped ahead a few decades to the fall of the Berlin Wall:

Having grown up in the Cold War where we hid under our desks because the Russians were coming, and I was at the wall when it happened. I was in Budapest when it happened. We were the good guys. The people that fight corruption over there and fought communism and tyranny — a young kid came up to me at the Berlin wall that said freedom to him was talking to me. How did the President jump the wall?

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Having grown up in the Cold War where we hid under our desks because the Russians were coming, and I was at the wall when it happened. I was in Budapest when it happened. We were the good guys. The people that fight corruption over there and fought communism and tyranny — a young kid came up to me at the Berlin wall that said freedom to him was talking to me. How did the President jump the wall? Get on the other side and attacking Americans, the horrors of Somalia, the dragging an American soldier through the streets. She's responsible for that? Blaming America first was the taunt of the far left. They would attack us for everything. Here the president of the United States blames an American ambassador for the horrors of the third world, the evils behind the Iron Curtain he's helping to restore. If I were a Republican — I'm not a Republican, I admit it. If I were a Republican I would say what happened to my goddamned party? We used to be the good guys of the Cold War? How come this joker is on the other side?

MATTHEWS:   Since this is reality TV, it's television and it's reality. It's not put together by script writers, but there's something in the personal chemistry between this President and that former ambassador. When you find out from your superior, get on the next plane. That's the language of violence. There's something going to happen to you if you don't get on the next plane. Get your baggage, get out of town. Wait for the trunk to come in a month.
