Hypocrisy: Gun-Owning View Hosts Call for More Gun Control

October 6th, 2015 5:09 PM

Two of the self-admitted gun owners on The View called for more gun control, Tuesday, lecturing Americans about the need for new restrictions. Raven-Symone demanded, “There need to be stricter gun laws. I have guns. I understand how to use them.” She added, “I personally think you need tougher gun laws and there needs to be some type of reform.”

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg insisted, “You want to get a gun? I need to know the background of your family. I need to make sure you don't have children in your household and that walk over and just get the gun. I need to make sure that your stuff is locked up.” She then conceded, “I’m a gun owner.”

As the studio audience marveled over this (with some clapping), Goldberg justified, “Yes. This is not new.... I am responsible. I'm a responsible person.”

Co-host Joy Behar proceeded to lecture gun-owning Americans not sitting next to her on the show:

JOY BEHAR:  They have got to start thinking rationally and intelligently. And you know what? Let me say one more thing and I don't need to preach. People have to really start writing to their representatives. If people don't say, “I'm not going to vote for you if you don't vote for gun law, nothing will happen. Nothing.

In June of 2014, then-View co-host Jenny McCarthy informed viewers that she was a gun owner advocating for gun control: “I am a gun owner and I am proud of it, but I also think there’s needs to be some changes.”

According to Townhall, ex-View co-host (and rabid supporter of gun control) Rosie O’Donnell said this on the issue:

When queried about whether her bodyguard should carry a gun on May 24, 2000, she said, 'I don’t personally own a gun, but if you are qualified, licensed and registered, I have no problem.'"

A partial transcript of the October 6 segment is below:

RAVEN-SYMONE: There need to be stricter gun laws. I have guns. I understand how to use them.

PAULA FARIS: Parents need to lock ‘em up. That’s the issue.

SYMONE: You need to lock 'em up. I personally think you need tougher gun laws and there needs to be some type of reform.

JOY BEHAR: It's easier to get a license to drive a car than a gun. It should be equally difficult.

SYMONE: Exactly.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Unless you're from Mexico.

BEHAR: Explain yourself.

GOLDBERG: Yeah. I mean, listen. I said in part in jest, because, you know, all of the immigration talk, and, you know. But, to me, you know, mental illness is something that's been around a long time. And one of the biggest setbacks we had with the mentally ill was the opening up, and dumping of the mentally ill, into the community, with no place to look. You know, I don't mean to point fingers. But this is an issue that's been with us a long time. This thing with guns. It's not all mentally ill people. And if there's —  the biggest thing you could do with the gun law is, you need to say, “okay, you want to get three, four guns? You want to get a gun? I need to know the background of your family. I need to make sure you don't have children in your household and that walk over and just get the gun. I need to make sure that your stuff is locked up." I'm a gun owner.

PAULA FARIS: You are a gun owner?

GOLDBERG: Yeah. I own — yeah. And I don't —

BEHAR: Yeah. She is. [People start clapping.] Why are they clapping for?

GOLDBERG: Yes. This is not new. No, no, no, no. You know. I am responsible. I'm a responsible person.

SYMONE: You have to be responsible.

GOLDBERG: I know how to do what I'm supposed to do. And I don't mind them doing a background check on me. I have nothing to hide. But I don't know anybody who goes hunting with an assault rifle. Sorry. There’s nothing left after that.

...

[On gun owners and gun control.]

BEHAR:  They have got to start thinking rationally and intelligently. And you know what? Let me say one more thing and I don't need to preach. People have to really start writing to their representatives. If people don't say, “I'm not going to vote for you if you don't vote for gun law, nothing will happen. Nothing.
