Maher Tells Pelosi ‘You Really Should Be Speaker Because Democrats Got More House Votes’

As NewsBusters readers know, one of my great pleasures is pointing out the staggering stupidity of Bill Maher.

My hero came through once again on HBO’s Real Time Friday telling Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), “You really actually should be the Speaker because Democrats got a million more House votes” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER, HOST: You almost are now the co-Speaker because John Boehner has to work with you. He needed Democratic votes, for example, for the fiscal cliff thing, right? Because he's got so many nuts who won't help him that he's got to come to you. That's sort of an unprecedented situation, is it not?

REPRESENTATIVE NANCY PELOSI (D-CALIFORNIA): Well, first of all we like to work in a bipartisan way, but it's kind of a little ridiculous when the party in the majority produces 70-some votes and we had to produce 170-some votes.

MAHER: You really actually should be the Speaker because [Applause] Democrats got a million more House votes. This is because of gerrymandering. They have a 33-seat majority, and yet they got, the Democrats got a million more votes in America for the House. Does that bother you?

PELOSI: Yes, it bothers me because of the legislation that, the opportunities that are lost.

Now, I realize this is a claim the left and their media minions have been making since last November, but the ignorance of civics is nonetheless disturbing.

The Founding Fathers wanted the House to be represented by people from districts all over the country elected exclusively by people in said districts.

At the beginning of each new Congress, the newly sworn in Representatives vote for who will be Speaker without any regard to the national popular vote.

That Maher is unaware of this is of course not surprising in the least. On a weekly basis, he demonstrates his lack of knowledge on a variety of subjects.

This is what really makes his show entertaining, for despite his consistent factual misstatements, the left and their media minions hold him up as one of the nation’s most important political commentators.

Says a lot, doesn’t it?
