The View Denounces Pledge of Allegiance, American Exceptionalism

America isn’t perfect but it’s the best place in the world to live. That belief wasn’t shared by racist ABC co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin who were triggered Thursday after members of Congress were asked to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz sent the racist duo into a tailspin because he wanted the House Judiciary Committee to recite the pledge before they began their proceedings when they convened.

“I also want to point out that Congress has already been saying the Pledge of Allegiance at work every day since 1988,” Goldberg shouted at the top of the show, calling the pledge a “waste of time.” She went on to suggest that “a better show of patriotism to be working on issues like police violence, mass shootings, [and] prison reform.”

Goldberg’s temper tantrum continued a little longer as she proclaimed: “We’re not fooling around. The people of the United States are not fooling around. You've wasted everybody's time suggesting your people do what they already do.”

Hostin attempted to discredit the Judiciary Committee by asserting, without evidence, that “a lot of those folks that have been newly appointed to that committee are hypocrites.”

As someone who has made it clear that she sees many things about America as racist and wants the poison of critical race theory pumped into schools, it’s no surprise that Hostin deduced that the real problem was kids saying the Pledge of Allegiance in school and being taught American exceptionalism.

“The problem I have is with this narrative of American exceptionalism that we've been taught since we were kids,” she huffed. She went on to admit she was indoctrinated in college to hate America and that the Pledge of Allegiance somehow doesn’t apply to black Americans, which Goldberg agreed with:

HOSTIN: I mean, I said the Pledge of Allegiance all through my life in school. When I got into college, I took an African American history course. And I started realizing that the actual Pledge of Allegiance doesn't apply to a lot of our citizens.

GOLDBERG: Well, they weren’t recording us.

HOSTIN: Yes.

Perverting the notion that America was always striving to be a more perfect union, Hostin insisted that we shouldn’t teach American exceptionalism to our kids, because “[America] hasn't met the dream of being exceptional. It hasn't met – this country – hasn’t met this dream of being this beacon on the hill.”

Obnoxiously adding: “But I think until we really meet the promise of what this country could truly be, then we shouldn't be touting us out as exceptionalists.”

She also seemed to hint that Gaetz’s desire to have the committee say the pledge was going against a long-standing Supreme Court ruling she noted: “ruled you can't force anyone to take the pledge.”

In reality, the rule was that the committee would take the time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, not that it made members say it. Their commitment to America as members of Congress and their purported love of country was what should make them want to say it.

Goldberg even had the nerve to claim she and the show didn’t have an “anti-American” stance.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: I also want to point out that Congress has already been saying the Pledge of Allegiance at work every day since 1988. Sicily's amendment was shot down because they didn't want to hear that. But Gaetz ended up passing – his passed without opposition. Again, it was something that already happens every day when folks walk in and they start their day. That's what they do.

SARA HAINES: Does it still count as a win if you just vote on something that’s already there?

GOLDBERG: I don’t know. I don't know. And this is the Judiciary Committee. Right? So, wouldn't it be a better show of patriotism to be working on issues like police violence, mass shootings, prison reform?

You know, this – You know, people – I don't know what it's going to take for them to recognize that people don’t – They're not – we’re not fooling around. The people of the United States are not fooling around. You've wasted everybody's time suggesting your people do what they already do.

SUNNY HOSTIN: Yeah.

GOLDBERG: What is this waste of time?

HOSTIN: A lot of those folks that have been newly appointed to that committee are hypocrites.

The problem I have is with this narrative of American exceptionalism that we've been taught since we were kids. I mean, I said the Pledge of Allegiance all through my life in school. When I got into college, I took an African American history course. And I started realizing that the actual Pledge of Allegiance doesn't apply to a lot of our citizens.

GOLDBERG: Well, they weren’t recording us.

HOSTIN: Yes. It hasn't met the dream of being exceptional. It hasn't met – this country – hasn’t met this dream of being this beacon on the hill.

And so, I think, the Supreme Court has already ruled you can't force anyone to take the pledge. But I think, until we really meet the promise of what this country could truly be, then we shouldn't be touting us out as exceptionalists.
