MRC’s Dan Gainor on ‘Varney & Co’. to Discuss BMI Special Report on Soros-Funded Journalism

With more than $9.7 million in funding from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, and a full-time faculty 68 percent comprised of the staff of liberal groups, Columbia University is training the next generation of liberal journalists.

To mark the release of a new Special Report by the Media Research Center’s Business and Media Institute, MRC VP for Business and Culture Dan Gainor appeared on “Varney & Co.” on Fox Business Network on Aug. 28. The topic of the report was the liberal slant of Columbia University School of Journalism – and the nearly $10 million it received from liberal billionaire George Soros.

“It’s back to school time, so it’s only fair to point out to people that the most influential journalism school in America, is also the third highest funded by George Soros out of all the schools he funds. He’s given them $9.7 million since the year 2000. The new head of the Columbia Journalism School, Steve Coll, used to head up the New America Foundation, which was another George Soros-funded operation that got $4.2 million from him,” Gainor said.

“Varney & Co.” host Stuart Varney asked Gainor if it bothered the journalism school to be so obviously biased as to get so much money from Soros. “Absolutely not,” Gainor replied.

“We’re talking about a school where the journalism professors, 68 percent of them, work for left wing publications – Alternet, The Huffington Post, The Nation. They’ve got the former head of the SDS [Students for a Democratic Society] who heads up their Ph. D program, Todd Gitlin. They’ve got the head of The Nation who runs another part of their operation. They’re so left-wing it’s laughable, so they don’t see anything wrong with taking money from George Soros.”

“This is a school that gave an award, that gave their top honor, to Al Jazeera. The only time they gave their top honor to an institution, they gave it to Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera’s got a fellowship at the school, and one of the adjunct professors is also an Al Jazeera staffer. So, this is across the board a left wing operation. Yes, you can get in, but be thoroughly prepared to be told that everything you believe is wrong, and everything they believe is right.”
