CNN's Piers Morgan used a Kinder egg to make an analogy about the absurdity of lax gun laws on Monday, but it backfired when his conservative guest didn't take the bait.
Morgan pointed to "your constitutional right to have guns, but I can't eat this chocolate egg, does that strike you as strange?" However, Oklahoma state senator Nathan Dahm agreed that Kinder eggs should be legal and the federal government would be "intrusive" to ban either Kinder eggs or guns. [Video below the break. Audio here.]
"The federal government has become very intrusive and they are operating outside of their Constitutional authority in many areas, and this is one example of it," he answered.
"So you would battle hard with me to save the Kinder egg for the American people?" Morgan asked, to which Dahm replied "I love the Kinder eggs."
Morgan abruptly switched the conversation: "Let's get serious against guns."
Below is a transcript:
PIERS MORGAN LIVE
PIERS MORGAN: And what is your point about the Second Amendment?
Sen. NATHAN DAHM, state senator, Oklahoma: It's a constitutional right that we have that is enshrined. It's a God-given, but Constitutionally-protected right –
MORGAN: Explain this to me, senator. Look, do you know what this is?
DAHM: Absolutely. I've seen those, and –
MORGAN: What is it?
DAHM: It's a Kinder surprise egg.
MORGAN: Describe it?
DAHM: Depends. Is that the old-style one or the new-style? The old-style was – it was a chocolate shell and inside it actually had a little toy for the child. And they would open it up.
MORGAN: Right. You realize they're illegal, not just in Oklahoma, but in the whole of America. I'm probably breaking the law just by holding one. Do you know why they're illegal?
DAHM: Because the government has interfered and is trying to protect us from ourselves.
MORGAN: Right. Because they're a health hazard. Do you get the irony?
DAHM: What is the irony?
MORGAN: I'm not allowed to eat a chocolate egg in America, it's illegal. And yet I can go and buy, I think it's over 2,360 different types of gun?
DAHM: The federal government has become very intrusive –
MORGAN: Because of your constitutional right to have guns, but I can't eat this chocolate egg, does that strike you as strange?
DAHM: It does, indeed. The federal government has become very intrusive and they are operating outside of their Constitutional authority in many areas, and this is one example of it.
MORGAN: So you would battle hard with me to save the Kinder egg for the American people?
DAHM: Oh, I love the Kinder eggs. I've given those to my cousins and different people for years. It's a fun little gift.
MORGAN: Let's get serious against guns.
