Joe Scarborough: GOP Could Be Doomed Forever After 2020

December 12th, 2019 10:33 AM

Buh-bye forever, Republicans! That's Joe Scarborough's prediction—or perhaps just his fondest wish. On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough predicted: "We may look back at 2020 as a last competitive election against the Republican and the Democratic Party." Scarborough asserted that "chances are very good that by 2024, because of demographic changes, Texas goes blue."

Scarborough adopts the patronizing view that people will vote their skin color instead of their interests; that voters of color will docilely remain on the Democrat plantation. If African American and Hispanic unemployment rates remain at historically low levels, as they have under President Trump, there's good reason to believe that a fair chunk of those voters will support Republican candidates.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: We may look back at 2020 as a last competitive election against the Republican and the Democratic Party. As Meacham says, a two-party duopoly that’s run this nation for 150 years. Chances are very good for 2024, because of demographic changes, Texas goes, uh, goes blue. And Texas becomes a Democratic state. And all everything that Donald Trump and Barr and Stephen Miller are doing now will actually work against them not only four years from now, but also, I would say, over the rest of our lifetime only because the demographic changes are going to be dramatic.

Note that Scarborough is far from the first to prematurely predict the GOP's demise. After Barack Obama's 2008 win, James Carville wrote a book that gloatingly predicted "40 More Years" of Democrat rule. That was followed by Republicans reclaiming the House, the Senate majority, and of course the White House in 2016.
