Joy Behar Thanks God Milley Warned China: ‘We Had a Nutcase in the White House!’

September 15th, 2021 3:39 PM

The View’s Joy Behar emphatically defended General Mark Milley, after it was revealed in Bob Woodward’s book that he may have committed treason while President Trump was in office.

In the journalist’s book, he claims that the Joint Chiefs Chairman, and principal military adviser to the president, secretly called China to assure them he would warn in advance if President Trump planned an attack against their country. Some might call that treason. But Joy Behar was fine with that, even being at odds with her equally liberal co-hosts.

Sunny Hostin soberly opened the discussion by admitting she found Milley’s actions treasonous: “I think the former twice disgraced -- twice-impeached, former disgraced president was perfectly capable of starting a nuclear war after his loss, but I think there's just no excuse for a silent coup which I think that's what that is,” she conceded.

But Behar was thankful for the general’s alleged betrayal of our country, because Trump was a “lunatic” and a “certifiable nutcase” who should’ve been removed from office, she claimed:

The whole time Trump was president, I was home saying, please, 'God, make there be an adult who controls this lunatic.' I know, you know, I was praying. 'Let there be somebody in the room who holds his arm back when he hits that -- goes to that button.'

I blame all the people around him and his cabinet who did not invoke the 25th amendment. Obviously he was nuts. We've seen it for four years. We saw the crazy behavior.

And God bless General Milley for straightening things out. I know that the chain of command was sacrosanct, I understand that but this was an emergency. We had a certifiable nutcase in the White House! [applause]

But more moderate co-host Sara Haines pushed back, saying we can’t “go to our adversaries” and warn them of attacks. She even called out Joy Behar for most likely not taking this same position if Republicans did this to President Biden (after his frequent pattern of seemingly senile behavior):

“But Joy, imagine right now, some people, some people,  I do not agree with this,  some people think that President Biden is dealing with some senility. Imagine now if you handed that power over and said 'well, Trump did it, and they went to China and checked,'” she pointed out. But Behar was irate at having to own up to her double standard.

“It’s not about that. I can read--believe my eyes, I see what's going on! Biden doesn't have senility. Trump was crazier and you know it!” she fumed.

But Haines repeated, “Some people like you believe the opposite of Biden. What I’m saying is you have to be okay with the issue on both sides of the pendulum.”

JOY BEHAR: The whole time Trump was president, I was home saying, please, God, make there be an adult who controls this lunatic. I know, you know, I was praying. Let there be somebody in the room who holds his arm back when he hits that -- goes to that button.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG:  Mm-hmm.

BEHAR: I blame all the people around him and his cabinet who did not invoke the 25th amendment. Obviously he was nuts. We've seen it for four years. We saw the crazy behavior.

GOLDBERG: Mm-hmm.

BEHAR: And God bless General Milley for straightening things out. I know that the chain of command was sacrosanct, I understand that but this was an emergency. We had a certifiable nutcase in the White House! [applause]

….

SARA HAINES: We don't need to be going to other people that are adversaries.

BEHAR: But wasn't the Chinese government saying, what's going on with America? I mean what’s going on this guy?

HAINES: You answer like you do your aunt and be, like, ‘we're good.’

BEHAR: No he went to his counterpart in China and said, don't worry.

HAINES: But he also said, this is the worst: Pledge to alert him in the event of an attack. You can't tell China we're coming for you.

We are united in that thing, and even if Trump is in charge, you go within. You go within our country. There are people.

HOSTIN: Call Pelosi, call the Secretary of Defense, someone else.

BEHAR: Listen he had a cabinet that should have invoked the 25th amendment for four years and they did not do it. How can you trust these people to do the right thing?

HAINES: But Joy, imagine right now, some people, some people,  I do not agree with this,  some people think that President Biden is dealing with some senility. Imagine now if you handed that power over and said well Trump did it, and they went to China and checked.  Now people that disagree with you will say --

BEHAR: It’s not about that. I can read--believe my eyes, I see what's going on. Biden doesn't have senility. Trump was crazy and you know it!

HAINES: Some people like you believe the opposite of Biden. What I’m saying is you have to be okay with the issue on both sides of the pendulum.

GOLDBERG: I am.

HAINES: You are?

BEHAR: Yes, I am, and I'll tell you why. Not just because we have to take a break, but because I feel very strongly that if something happens in the middle of the night -- did you ever see a movie called "Failsafe"?

HOSTIN: Yes.

BEHAR: No.

GOLDBERG: You've never seen it? Henry Fonda, and it sort of speaks to this because a mistake is made, and a missile is sent over to Russia, and he can't stop it. He can't stop it, and so for me, I think this is a good time for America to maybe take a look at some of the chain of command and see if we need a little bit of failsafe in there in there in the event --

[ Applause ]

WHOOPI GOLDBERG:-- You know, that this comes up again, because presidents are only human. So they have all kinds of ups and downs and this and that. So if there is -- if there is -- I know. If there is a little bit of checks and balances in there so that it doesn't have to go this way or that way, and I will say, I don't think he's the right person to be talking about invoking treason. I don't think it's the right time.

BEHAR: Trump.

GOLDBERG: That man. We have to go.
