'View': Blame Trump for Why Civility Has Disappeared from Thanksgiving Dinner

November 28th, 2019 12:00 PM

On Wednesday’s The View, the frequently uncivil hosts spent a short segment reminiscing over more civil times in the country. While Whoopi Goldberg wondered why the country couldn’t return to having polite disagreements at the dinner table this Thanksgiving, her co-hosts suggested it wasn’t our fault; it was President Trump’s.

Towards the end of a segment complaining about “unhinged” Rudy Giuliani, Whoopi sighed at what was going on in Washington: “There are things to watch for Thanksgiving...there’s great stuff happening and then there’s all this! It makes me sad in a way. Because it’s not America!” she complained.

Whoopi went on to wish for times where there wasn’t animosity towards family members for their political differences.

I want the America where we're all sitting around going, ‘Well, I don't know if I agree with that?’ Not, ‘You're a terrible, horrible person’ because remember, like, 20 years ago when people started saying, ‘Well, you're not really an American if you don't agree with me’?’ I want to go back to those days. I want the days back where we can sit and disagree and pick our teeth and eat food. That's what I want. You know? That's what I want.

This was met with applause but Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar couldn’t help but blame Trump.

“I think that will come back when people believe in their government, when people believe that their president is acting for their own -- for Americans,” Hostin remarked.

Behar piped up with “Instead of himself!” to Hostin’s agreement.

Whoopi asked her co-hosts, “Do you think it will come back if we believe in ourselves as well?” before adding, “Civility seems to have gone away.” The hosts cut to a commercial break right after this.

In another segment, Abby Huntsman complained that she was shocked Republicans were still standing by the President, after the Ukraine phone call, which she deemed was wrong. Joy Behar accused Republicans in Congress of being “brainwashed” by Fox News, a cheap shot she made last week on the show as well. Sounds like civility is in short supply, at The View table.

The View

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: [referencing Rudy Giuliani and Trump] It's not America. This is not America. I don't remember this being America.

[ Applause ]

SUNNY HOSTIN: I think that will come back when people believe in their government, when people believe that their president is acting for their own -- for Americans--

BEHAR: Instead of himself.

HOSTIN: Right. Instead of himself
WHOOPI: Do you think it will come back if we start believing in ourselves as well?and remembering how -- because you brought up a couple of days ago, civility. And that seems to have been---gone away...
