Chuck Todd Suggests GOP More to Blame for Border Crisis Than Biden

May 14th, 2023 2:02 PM

On Sunday's edition of NBC's Meet the Press, moderator Chuck Todd shifted blame from President Biden and the Democrat Party to the Republican Party for the crisis at the southern border which saw the largest numbers of illegal migrant crossings in American history. This is despite the fact that Biden and the Democrats did nothing to secure the southern border when they had unified control of the government during Biden's first two years in office. Todd's comments look even more foolish when you recall that when Trump attempted to secure funding for the wall along the southern border, the Democrat-controlled Congress fought him tooth and nail.

Speaking to Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), Todd noted that Democrats didn't secure the border but according to Todd, "Republicans have dirtier hands" when it comes to blame for the immigration crisis.

"I understand what you’re saying about the preparation for this moment, but politically, other than introducing a bill on day one he never talked about it," Todd conceded.

"He didn't lean his shoulder in, build back better was the focus, everything else was the focus, and look the Republicans have dirtier hands, but the Democrats don't have clean hands on this either."

When Murphy responded he falsely claimed that Republicans in Congress are happy that conditions at the U.S./Mexican border have essentially collapsed:

As soon as votes were done, rushed down to the border to take smiling photographs with the border patrol essentially celebrating the fact that there was chaos. Because they believe that there's political gain to be had. So I think Americans know that it’s Republicans, not Democrats that have been sitting on the outside when it comes to fixing our broken immigration system.

There was zero pushback from Todd on those false claims. In reality, if anyone is happy with foreign nationals flooding into our country, it's the Democrat Party. They have shown no signs of wanting to fix this crisis.

CHUCK TODD: I understand what you’re saying about the preparation for this moment, but politically, other than introducing a bill on day one he never talked about it. He didn't lean his shoulder in, build back better was the focus, everything else was the focus, and look the Republicans have dirtier hands, but the Democrats don't have clean hands on this either.

SEN. CHRIS MURPHY (D-CT): Republicans have had multiple opportunities to come to the table and pass immigration reform that would fix the problem at the border. And my belief is that while you have a small group of Republicans who legitimately want to engage, the majority of that party delights at chaos at the border. You saw some of my colleagues on Tuesday.
