For Brangelina, It's Social Liberalism, Not Commitment-Phobia Holding Off Wedding Bells

Something tells me this excuse wouldn't fly with 99.9 percent of American women, much less any woman as attractive as Ms. Jolie:

NEW YORK Sep 8, 2006 (AP)— Brad Pitt, ever the social activist, says he won't be marrying Angelina Jolie until the restrictions on who can marry whom are dropped.

"Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able," the 42-year-old actor reveals in Esquire magazine's October issue, on newsstands Sept. 19.

In the article he reflects on "fifteen things I think everyone should know."

Now, honestly I don't care either way if they get hitched or not, my socially conservative views on marriage and family notwithstanding.

It's just that this celebrity couple has decided that their family should be a vehicle to advocate, not just live out, liberal social values such as legalizing marriage for same-sex couples.

Agree or disagree with gay marriage as you may, you have to admit there's something supremely hubristic and cynical for a Hollywood elite like Pitt to imagine his imagined societal blackmail will push the American people to rewrite thousands of years of traditional marriage.

To borrow from Laura Ingraham, Brad, just shut up and act.
