On Thursday night, an independent investigation commissioned by Governor Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) into fellow Democrat and Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell concluded he abused his position to, in the words of the New York Post, “score expensive event tickets for his romantic conquests, pull strings to try to get his secret girlfriend a cushy state promotion, and task his own aides with finding him a ‘first lady.’”
In addition, it found he engaged in behavior “constitut[ing] sexual harassment” that “was derogatory or demeaning.” Sherrill responded by demanding Caldwell’s resignation, but none of these things interested ABC’s Good Morning America or CBS Mornings.
NBC’s Today ran a 34-second news brief, but co-host Craig Melvin couldn’t be bothered to mention either candidate's political party (Democrat).

“Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill calling for the immediate resignation of Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell, setting today as the deadline. Governor Sherrill says an independent investigation found evidence that Caldwell sexually harassed a female co-worker,” Melvin said.
He added that Sherrill argued “Caldwell’s ethical lapses persisted despite multiple warnings and trainings” while “Caldwell, for his part, has denied the allegations,” and “[h]is attorney saying in a statement they strongly disputed the three findings in the investigation.”

The Democratic governor’s office launched the independent investigation into one of its own in May after receiving an anonymous letter accusing Caldwell, the former president of Centenary University, of inappropriate behavior towards women.
The probe led by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino and authored by law firm Lowenstein Sandler concluded that the lieutenant governor’s behavior “constituted sexual harassment and was derogatory or demeaning.”
One of the most disturbing accusations in the report occurred in April 2026 when Caldwell hit on a staffer’s much younger friend at an official event, then lashed out in the back of his state vehicle after being rejected, explicitly telling a female aide that “you young women are looking for young sperm,” the report alleged.
Politico said in a story Wednesday that Sherrill has curtailed her out-of-state travel this month, so as to not temporarily transfer gubernatorial powers to Caldwell. Politico did say that such circumstances have occurred “for at least 18 days, even after her administration commenced an internal investigation into his conduct.”
