MSNBC’s McCaskill: My Family Will Watch Jan 6 Footage Every Independence Day

July 2nd, 2021 12:24 PM

On Friday’s Morning Joe, former Senator and current MSNBC muppet Claire McCaskill announced to viewers that her family was starting a new tradition: “every Fourth of July going forward,” they’d get together and watch the New York Times’s compilation of January 6 Capitol Hill footage.

NewsBusters analysts try to keep their attention focused on the media, not former politicians, but McCaskill’s continued prominence on MSNBC has shifted her into the former category. If the network has deemed her unhinged enough to fill in for Nicolle Wallace, host of Deadline: White House, then she’s fair game at this point.

This comment by McCaskill — which one can only hope, for her family’s sake, was an exaggeration — is the latest case in the media’s ongoing obsession with January 6. For example just last week, CNN’s New Day co-host Brianna Keilar interrupted a conversation about critical race theory to play footage from that day.

And who can blame them? The media have made it abundantly clear that they see that day as a political win for their side. If that sounds overly cynical, remember what industry we’re talking about here.
