Monday, the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision regarding the removal of inactive voters from state registries. It was decided that Ohio was within the bounds of the 1993 National Voter Registration Act to remove individuals from the rolls after 6 years (12 elections) of not voting and multiple attempts to contact.
TIME reported the decision by way of an Associated Press piece. However, instead of making the headline consistent with the facts of the case, TIME purposely lied about the amount of time and effort needed to remove someone’s voter registration in Ohio. The headline reads:
“Supreme Court Allows Ohio to Purge Thousands of Voters After 2 Years of Inactivity.”
This kind of trickery from TIME is bolstered by the fact that it was a conservative vs. liberal vote, with the 4 left-leaning justices dissenting. Clearly, a false, partisan viewpoint is being forced upon this otherwise neutral and informative piece.
Ohio’s Secretary of State, Jon Husted noticed the misleading headline and set the record straight.
If they’re willing to distort the truth of a United States Supreme Court decision, it’s no wonder TIME is a failing publication.
