Meyers: 'Obama Giving Iran Billions of Dollars Is a Lie'

January 10th, 2020 9:46 AM

Those of us who were not living under rocks during the Obama Administration would quickly recall the $1.7 billion in cash transferred to Iran on American planes in 2016, leaving the terrorist-ridden government awash in currency. NBC host Seth Meyers exposed his naiveté of the Iran nuclear deal on Wednesday’s Late Night when he denied the massive cash flow to the country took place.

In what was a rather off-putting comment, Meyers seemed to trivialize the demise of Iran’s Soleimani by characterizing him as a “top Iranian General” as opposed to a “brutal terrorist.” He also decried President Trump as the reason for America’s contentious relationship with Iran:

This speech swung wildly from bluster to threats to offerings of peace to flat out lies. In fact, you'll never guess who Trump blamed for the military conflict he provoked by assassinating a top Iranian General.

Rather than express gratitude and reverence for a job well done on the part of the United States Military for killing one of the world’s top terrorists, Meyers laid into Trump for criticizing former President Obama’s foreign policy:

Trump repeated an insane talking point his GOP allies and Fox pundits have trotted out since last night. They all tried to place the blame for what happened not on President Trump but on President Obama…You're blaming Obama for this?

Apparently the liberal media motto is if you don’t have anything nice to say about former President Obama then don’t bring him up. Meyers adhered to this advice when he spewed the following falsehood:

First of all, he pursed diplomacy with Iran. Second the guy's been out of office for three years...Now needless to say this claim about Obama giving Iran billions of dollars is a lie that has been repeatedly debunked but it doesn't matter to these guys because they're all obsessed with Obama.

Obsession is a state of mind Meyers should be all too familiar with, considering the one he has with President Trump. Despite the Iranian regime murdering hundreds of Americans and instigating conflict for decades, Meyers proceeded to place blame on Trump for the situation we currently find ourselves in:

.... Because Trump and his allies have been insisting in Orwellian fashion that this act of war was actually an attempt to de-escalate and stop a war…But make no mistake this completely unnecessary crisis was entirely Trump's doing. He's been on a march towards conflict with Iran from day one which is why Congress has to stop this from happening again.

Meyers should avoid labeling himself a foreign policy expert anytime soon. Although, he would find a spot at home as one on MSNBC.

SETH MEYERS: This speech swung wildly from bluster to threats to offerings of peace to flat out lies. In fact, you'll never guess who Trump blamed for the military conflict he provoked by assassinating a top Iranian General. Trump repeated an insane talking point his GOP allies and Fox pundits have trotted out since last night. They all tried to place the blame for what happened not on President Trump but on President Obama.

(Fox clips play)

MEYERS: You're blaming Obama for this? First of all, he pursed diplomacy with Iran. Second the guy's been out of office for three years...Now needless to say this claim about Obama giving Iran billions of dollars is a lie that has been repeatedly debunked but it doesn't matter to these guys because they're all obsessed with Obama. Now don't get me wrong, there's a lot you can criticize about Obama's expansion of war powers and the national security state and his use of drones. But it's insane to blame Obama for a military conflict he pursued peace with....Because Trump and his allies have been insisting in Orwellian fashion that this act of war was actually an attempt to de escalate and stop a war that Trump has the power to do whatever he wants, and also, that none of this is his fault. But make no mistake this completely unnecessary crisis was entirely Trump's doing. He's been on a march towards conflict with Iran from day one which is why Congress has to stop this from happening again.
