Reports of Florida federal judge Aileen Cannon granting Donald Trump's request for a special master to oversee the documents seized by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago was enough to send the Univision's morning news team into a TDS frenzy on Tuesday.
“To authorize one investigation and block another”; is how anchor Elyangelica Gonzalez, from Despierta America, framed the report, which centered more on “what the former president expected happened, didn't it?”, than on the facts regarding the judge's order; one that in the words of D.C. correspondent Edwin Pitti, few believe “will ultimately change the decision because the Department of Justice has a lot of evidence.”
Take a look at what passes for reporting at the Trump-deranged Spanish-speaking corporate media:
Univisión Despierta América
ELYANGELICA GONZALEZ: To authorize one investigation and block another, that's what a Florida judge just ordered by allowing a special master to oversee the documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. The Department of Justice can now investigate whether such materials threaten national security, but cannot use them in a potential criminal probe against former President Trump, as Edwin Pitti explains to us at this hour live from Washington, D.C. My dear Edwin, what the former president expected happened, didn't it?
EDWIN PITTI: It did, Ely. That is why many people are already saying that this is a slight victory for the defense of the former president. But it is important to note Ely, that although this action slows the investigation down, few believe that this will ultimately change the decision because the Department of Justice has a lot of evidence. But, it is also important to make clear, Ely, that Judge Aileen Cannon published that inventory that has powerfully attracted attention where we see that the FBI seized over10,000 documents that were not classified, but among everything that was found there are 48 folders marked as classified that were completely empty. That is why in the past hours the president himself, ex-President Donald Trump, lashed out against the FBI at a rally and defended his political base. Here's part of what he said.
DONALD TRUMP: Republicans and the MAGA movement are not the ones trying to undermine our democracy. We are the ones trying to save our democracy, very simple.
PITTI: Ely, and because we're so close to the November midterm elections, President Biden is also visiting several cities and over the weekend he gave a speech where he once again lashed out at Trump and his supporters known as MAGA. Listen:
JOE BIDEN: Trump and the MAGA Republicans made their choice. We can choose to build a better America or we can continue down this slimy path to oblivion where we don't want to go.
PITTI: At this time, the Department of Justice is just saying that they continue to analyze the judge's opinion and will make a decision on the next steps.
GONZALEZ: …this looks to be a political storm- we’ll see how it ends.
Univision didn’t even bother to conceal their outrage at the fact that the Bad Orange Man got what he wanted. Nor did they care about the concept of presumption of innocence. Take Pitti's comment that “48 folders marked as classified that were completely empty,” that left a question mark on whether the folders were empty or emptied, and González saying “[t]he Department of Justice can now investigate whether such materials threaten national security.”
Yet, while doing their best to trash Trump, the reporters aired a clip of President Biden giving a speech over the weekend that showcased his unhealthy obsession with his predecessor and his role as divider-in-chief.
“Trump and the MAGA Republicans made their choice. We can choose to build a better America or we can continue down this slimy path to oblivion where we don't want to go,” Biden said angrily about the slimy path to oblivion where HE, and only he, is taking the nation.
