EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Ken Buck Blasts ‘Dangerous’ Big Tech Censorship

January 13th, 2023 2:24 PM

Elon Musk’s release of the Twitter Files exposed Twitter’s bloated censorship apparatus and pervasive collusion with federal government agencies. But those documents are just the tip of the censorship iceberg.

Longtime Big Tech critic Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) joined me in this week’s episode of CensorTrack with Paiten to discuss the Twitter Files, Google manipulating elections and the dangers of Big Tech censorship.

Buck blasted the censorship cabal exposed by Musk’s release of the Twitter Files.

“It’s great that Elon Musk has purchased Twitter,” he said. “The idea that companies are controlled by woke executives and those woke executives are making decisions based on their political views and not based on disseminating information to the public so the public can make a decision is really dangerous.”

However, Buck noted that Twitter isn’t the only Big Tech company targeting conservatives.

“94% of the searches are on Google. And if Google decides it’s going to suppress Ken Buck’s website, campaign website, it can do so very easily. And if Google decides that it doesn’t like Donald Trump, it can bring negative articles to the top of the search page for Donald Trump and and will suppress the positive articles on Donald Trump. And it can increase the positive articles on Joe Biden and suppress the negative articles,” he said.

In October 2022, MRC Free Speech America researchers caught Google burying the campaign websites of Republican candidates in hotly contested Senate races in search results ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The search engine ranked 10 of 12 Senate Republican candidates’ campaign websites (83%) far lower on page one of its organic search results compared to their Democratic opponents’ campaign websites.

MRC Free Speech America researchers also analyzed the 36 top House races, only to find that Google showed no bias against Republicans in those races, where polling showed the House did not hang in the balance and was likely to be put under GOP control. A third study exposed Google for burying candidates who have aggressively acted against Big Tech, including Buck. A fourth study revealed how Google attempted to manipulate undecided voters in the Georgia runoff Senate race.

Buck said Americans must wield the power of the market and pass bills addressing Big Tech censorship.

“Mike Lee is a champion in the antitrust area in the Senate and he’s working closely with Amy Klobachar, the Senator from Minnesota, and the two of them have very good bills that would address a lot of these issues and help spur competition,” Buck said. “We’re working on the House side to promote those bills also. So we have to get legislation. But we also have to use our market power.”
