314-11: Google News Favors Left, Nearly Shuts Out Right-Leaning Stories in February

March 12th, 2026 10:39 AM

Only a handful of right-leaning stories slipped through Google News’s iron grip on information domination. While the tech giant pushed 314 left-leaning stories, its gatekeepers only permitted 11 right-leaning articles to make the occasional appearance in the platform’s morning editions last month.

MRC uncovered that just 2% of Google News's top morning stories in February came from sources rated right-leaning by media ratings firm AllSides. Google's leftist bias is only further underscored by the fact that it completely shut out right-leaning outlets for over half the month.

MRC’s Findings of Google News’s Top 20 Morning Editions in February:

  • Google News suppressed right-leaning articles, which accounted for just 11 stories (2.2%).
    • For 17 days, Google News presented zero right-leaning articles.
    • When Google News did feature a right-leaning outlet, it only provided one per day, but even then, it buried the lone right-leaning outlet article beneath a bevy of elitist media offerings nearly half of the time (45%).
  • Google News featured 314 left-leaning stories (64.5%) and 162 stories (nearly 33.3%) rated “center” by AllSides.

"Google can pretend to hide behind its algorithm all it wants, the fact that it followed Apple News's lead in suppressing right-leaning outlets tells you all that you need to know about the search giant's rampant anti-conservative bias," said MRC President David Bozell. "Google must come clean and start operating fairly. It can do so by not discriminating against right-leaning outlets."

Google News Suppressed Right-leaning Outlets

Google News ran 487 stories from AllSides-rated outlets in February and its algorithm could only muster a measly 11 stories from four right-leaning outlets—Daily Mail, Fox News, New York Post and The Bulwark.

Google News didn’t even touch a right-leaning source for 17 days out of the month, but when the digital news gatekeeper did feature a right-leaning outlet, it provided no more than one each day. The news app also often buried the lone right-leaning article toward the bottom of its morning top 20 stories, forcing users to wade through elitist media just to get to a right-leaning source.

Among the right-leaning stories, only a fraction featured substantive political coverage. Google News completely suppressed coverage about the Justice Department’s long-awaited release of additional Jeffrey Epstein files, and the tech titan featured only one Fox News article on Trump’s State of the Union speech.

The tech giant had no problem highlighting trivial stories about sports or weight loss drugs when providing links for right-leaning outlets, however. Google News shared New York Post articles with headlines like “Australian Open women’s final rocked by ‘very uncomfortable’ Elena Rybakina coach photo” and “People are getting an old-timey sailors' disease on GLP-1s.”

Google News Made Ample Space for Elitist Media Both Left and Center

While Google News repeatedly left out articles from right-leaning outlets, it left time and space for Qatari state-funded media outlet Al Jazeera with stories about Israel’s Rafa border, India’s influence in Afghanistan, Bangladesh election results, and  the “‘dart frog’ toxin, said to be linked to Alexey Navalny’s death.”

Google News similarly filled up many of its news slots with outlandish public interest stories like the following:

  • “Too Many Toots? What Excessive Farting Says About Your Health” from HuffPost Life
  • “What Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show Taught Me About MAGA Men,” from Variety.
  • “Neanderthal Men and Human Women Were Most Likely to Hook Up, Study Finds,” from Gizmodo
  • “Trump’s Staffers Spent the Weekend at Two MAGA Weddings” from New York Magazine’s The Cut

Much of this is to be expected from Google, which has a long history of bias and censorship. But Google News made no discernible effort to change course even after the release of MRC's widely reported Apple News study outlining leftist bias, which prompted the FTC to send a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

MRC VP for Free Speech Dan Schneider commented on Google’s apparent disregard for the FTC’s warnings. “These massive corporations throw their weight around, arrogantly assuming they are above the law and too big to be held accountable. Google has long skirted election laws and consumer protection standards, all in an effort to push its radical agenda and to achieve its partisan goals,” said Schnider.

MRC’s report showed that it took 100 days for Apple News to include a right-leaning news outlet in its top stories. Even elitist media outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and BBC covered the FTC letter and MRC’s study, yet Google News suppressed the story.

Methodology: During the time period Feb. 1 - 28, 2026, MRC researchers examined the top 20 stories featured on Google News each day at approximately 8:30 AM ET. MRC researchers used the AllSides media bias ratings, which categorize an outlet as “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right” or “right” to determine the overall bias presented by Google News and analyzed the results.
