Daily Kos Week In Review: The Tsarnaev Brothers, Honorary Conservatives

April 19th, 2013 10:59 PM

The Boston Marathon bombing wasn't carried out by Tea Party Republicans or anyone else remotely associated with conservatism, yet one Kossack declared on Wednesday that conservatives, violence-prone "conspiracy driven racist[s]" that they are, thought the bombers just might be righties.

As usual, each headline is preceded by the blogger's name or pseudonym.

LaFeminista: Marathon bombing the latest right-wing 'atrocity'?

...The right wing is now praying that one of their own is not responsible once again for an act of terror because they know that they are more than capable of such an atrocity. Hoping to dodge the bullet, rather than be part of the solution in their conspiracy driven racist nightmare...

Hunter: Righties may exploit Boston for political gain

...This isn't another 9/11. It shouldn't be, either. After 9/11 there were many politicians who seemed to make it their mission to make America feel more terrified. Everything became a threat. Iraq was a threat. Patriotism was defined by how publicly afraid you were, and how willing you were to do unspecified or specified somethings about that, and that is why we got things like the Patriot Act, and why it was called the Patriot Act—shredding certain inconvenient bits of constitutional law was the patriotic thing to do, and only someone siding with the enemy (the enemy being terrorism in all its forms, not just one nation or one group) would possibly object...

chaunceydevega: The Gosnell story is porn for pro-lifers

...Conservatives (and those others) who would deny women their reproductive rights view [Gosnell] as an example of why abortion should be outlawed in the United States.

By comparison, those of us who [believe] that abortions should be safe, legal, and widely available to all who seek them necessarily understand that a post abortion-rights world will create more Kermit Gosnells, not fewer of them...

In the Right-wing echo chamber, the lurid details about how Kermit Gosnell performed late term abortions are the stuff of a moral panic, where the descriptions fit neatly into pre-existing beliefs about the twin fictions that are “the liberal media” and a “conspiracy” to suppress any discussion of abortion that does not serve the “left-wing” agenda...

...Many Republicans are obsessed with dead fetuses. But, they are also rather immune to the suffering of adults, teens, children, and babies whose bodies and lives are shattered by American foreign and domestic policy.

In total, the obsession with the specifics of Kermit Gosnell’s deeds by the Right-wing media constitutes a type of “torture porn” best exemplified by Hollywood films like Saw or Hostel...

The Right-wing echo chamber’s torture porn obsession with dead fetuses and Kermit Gosnell is their effort to “find” Dred Scott and the visually provocative whipped body of former slaves...

The Abolitionists were working for the expansion of human freedom; the “pro-life” movement is working in the opposite direction...

winnerforlife: We need a 'Black Book of Capitalism'

I have noted a tendency when Communism or Socialism is discussed to immediately bring up the millions of lives lost under various regimes.

Can we talk about death by capitalism?

Can we talk about the massacre of millions of the native peoples by European settlers in the Americas and other lands such as Australia?

What about the brutality of slavery? The millions of lives lost on the journey from Africa and subsequently in horrific conditions in the New World?...

What about the World Wars? Were they not predominantly wars between capitalist nations?

What about the Holocaust? Was Nazi Germany not capitalist?...

It's called death by capitalism. Capitalism, if anything, has probably caused more death and human misery than the former communist/socialist regimes. The worst thing about it is we ignore the violence and evils of capitalism, living in a relatively wealthy country that hides it from view...

I'm in no way diminishing the brutality of various communist/socialist regimes. But let's stop pretending that capitalism has somehow been less vicious...

Eternal Hope: Let's not be beastly to the Iranians or Norks

...[I]f we are so concerned that Iran is building nukes, then let's put wind farms and solar farms in every single town in this country so we can grow our economy and increase jobs and revenues without raising taxes and then let's turn around and help the Iranians to do the same. If we can show a better way of generating energy, then that would eliminate the need for a nuclear power plant in Iran and the suspicion that has existed ever since the hostage crisis in 1980.

As for North Korea, we have every right to defend ourselves in the event that they follow through on their threats and we have every right to defend South Korea and Japan in the event of an attack on them. But let's face it; they aren't doing anything that the Neocons have not done over the past 13 years or so, blustering threats against countries that they don't like. They understand full well the neocon mentality, having been named as part of the "Axis of Evil." Their threats are what is known as psy-ops -- strike fear into the hearts of our people that we are on the brink of nuclear war. We have a fundamental choice -- we can either reject the doctrine of preemptive warfare, or we can lower ourselves to North Korea's level...
