Editor’s Pick: Free Beacon Reveals Politico Reporter Facing Probe for Being Chinese Spy

October 24th, 2025 8:03 PM

Over at the Washington Free Beacon, reporter Matthew Xiao delivered a bombshell Friday that an unnamed Politico reporter is being investigated by “European security services…for working a Chinese spy.”

Xiao cited the original scoop from “European news site Euractiv” that said the Brussels, Belgium-based reporter “is suspected of using their position as a journalist to cultivate potential targets working in Brussels-based international organisations, including by making sexual overtures towards officials in these institutions.”

He added the reporter is no longer with Politico and the company has largely declined to comment, telling Euractiv they don’t “comment on personnel departures.”

It is unclear whether the reporter's departure from Politico stemmed from the espionage investigation. A Politico spokesman said European authorities have not contacted the company and that it “does not comment on personnel departures as these are confidential personnel matters,” according to Euractiv.

Along with highlighting the disturbing rise of Chinese Community Party influence operations in the U.S., Xiao noted that, just “[l]ast week, Belgian authorities arrested a police officer on suspicion of spying for China and Russia.”
