Chris Matthews on Sunday aired clips of the election night coverage from the 1960 presidential race between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon:

Those of you that know your history are aware that due to the separation of only 112,000 popular votes, many inside the Nixon campaign wanted the candidate to ask for recounts in a number of states.

Thinking this wouldn't be in the nation's best interest, Nixon chose not to listen to his advisors and instead was gracious in defeat.

If only Al Gore would have shown as much class 40 years later.
