Damage Control: The View Skips Bribery Indictment of Democrat Menendez

September 22nd, 2023 1:41 PM

ABC’s The View – the most popular daytime talk show in America – is known for their “Hot Topics” segments where they spout off and flaunt their ignorance on all sorts of political issues; they even boast it drives their ratings success. But despite the show being live on Friday, they ignored the hottest topic of the day: New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez getting federally indicted for bribery; a story which broke long before their show aired.

Instead of highlighting how the Democratic Senator allegedly had taken wads of cash and gold bars all worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from an Egyptian businessman (and hid it all around his house), they kicked off the show by vapidly discussing actress Sophie Turner getting divorced from singer Joe Jonas.

This was followed up with another segment (the second time in one week) about Democratic Senator John Fetterman (PA) getting criticized for being a slob and wearing hoodies and shorts on the Senate floor. “Okay, okay, all sorts of things going on in Congress right now,” fill-in moderator Joy Behar quipped.

She whined that the dumbing down of the dress code “has caused a tremendous problem on the floor with Democrats and Republicans coming together on this topic.” And, of course, Republicans were supposedly the biggest problem in Congress and for the country at the moment: “Now, this is the thing. The Republican Party is in such disarray, the country is on the brink of re-electing a criminal, basically, if he wins, God forbid, and this is what they're worried about?!”

The View’s faux-conservatives Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro were as useless as ever. Both failed to bring up the Menendez indictment as they sounded off on the Fetterman matter as if it was the biggest issue of the day.

Farah Griffin even boasted about how tough she got on Republicans. “Listen, Congress is a steaming hot mess. I do not disagree with you on any of this. And the House Republican conference is a mess. I'm the first to critique my own party. We’re careening into an avoidable government shutdown,” huffed about “my party.”

And while Navarro didn’t like Fetterman dressing poorly on the Senate floor, she released more hot air whining about other senators she despised:

And I don't like it when Ted Cruz does it. I don't like what I feel is the erosion of decorum in the Senate, which I think is incredibly important. I didn't like it when Kyrsten Sinema showed up with all of those colored wigs looking like Senator My Little Pony. I thought she looked like Snyder from One Day at a Time when she showed up in – Do we have the picture of her in that jean vest? So, I thought that was ridiculous. I think this is ridiculous.

“That being said, if we agree on something, I sure as Hell wish they'd agree on not shutting the government and passing all the people that need to be confirmed,” Navarro bloviated.

How about agreeing that taking bribes is bad, Ana?

For her part, staunchly racist co-host Sunny Hostin did a 180 flip on Fetterman’s attire. After saying he should dress professionally earlier in the week, she flip-flopped and suggested what he was really doing was “sticking up for people with disabilities.”

JOY BEHAR: Welcome back. Okay, okay, all sorts of things going on in Congress right now. Chuck Schumer, the Senate, he has decided that Fetterman can wear sweats, everybody can wear sweats. He doesn't care what you wear when you come in. Okay, this has caused a tremendous problem on the floor with Democrats and Republicans coming together on this topic. Even Manchin and Dick Durban are saying they’re concerned about the standards. Okay?

Now, this is the thing. The Republican Party is in such disarray, the country is on the brink of re-electing a criminal, basically, if he wins, God forbid, and this is what they're worried about?!

SUNNY HOSTIN: Yeah.

BEHAR: I mean, really, I think – and a shutdown by the way is imminent. Pretty soon we'll have no government. They're going away for the weekend and they're worried about who is wearing what on the floor. Would you explain this to me please.

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: Yes. Listen, Congress is a steaming hot mess. I do not disagree with you on any of this. And the House Republican conference is a mess. I'm the first to critique my own party. We’re careening into an avoidable government shutdown.

But that said, I already give my take earlier this week that I do think you should dress for the job you want and I think you should -- there should be decorum. I love just the tradition of it. Staff and guests at the capitol still have to dress up, they’re still required to. But here's my bigger issue with Fetterman: I felt like I went pretty easy on him because I feel strongly about if you have mental health, physical health struggles talking about it openly is challenging and I applauded him for doing that.

But he's lost me. Politically we don't agree anyway. He spends his time on his official Senate Twitter account engaging in some like, frankly, Marjorie Taylor Greene-like behavior. He’s referring to male genitalia, he’s calling Republicans derogatory names. And then his personal Twitter account all day is just attacking people and trolling. Like, Congress has some things they should be doing. Like why don’t we fund the government, why don’t we pass some common sense – whether it’s gun reforms, let’s do somethings to boost the economy. Why are our senators acting like teenage girls?

ANA NAVARRO: You know, I actually agree with you but I will say this, he's not initiating any of those exchanges.

HOSTIN: No, he’s not.

NAVARRO: He's clapping back at stuff that people are saying.

HOSTIN: Everybody loves a good clap back.

NAVARRO: That part is true too b it it’s – And I don't like it when Ted Cruz does it. I don't like what I feel is the erosion of decorum in the Senate, which I think is incredibly important. I didn't like it when Kyrsten Sinema showed up with all of those colored wigs looking like Senator My Little Pony. I thought she looked like Snyder from One Day at a Time when she showed up in – Do we have picture of her in that jean vest? So, I thought that was ridiculous. I think this is ridiculous.

Listen, I don't want to show up at a funeral home and have the funeral director in a hoodie and shorts. I don't want to show up to my plane today and have my pilot in a hoodie and shorts.

BEHAR: It so happens.

NAVARRO: That being said, if we agree on something, I sure as Hell wish they'd agree on not shutting the government and passing all the people that need to be confirmed.

[Applause]

HOSTIN: Can I say something about? You know, Fetterman is known for sort of being this hookie Philly -- not Philadelphia, but Pennsylvania kind of down-home guy. His constituents love him. He works really, really hard for them. He had a stroke. He has made his way back. He's a brilliant person. He went to the Harvard school, the Kennedy government – Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. That doesn't mean you're brilliant but he is. And he is sticking up for people with disabilities.
