‘View’ Cheers Gallup Poll: ‘Average Joe’ Likes What ‘Joe’ Is Doing for America!

April 8th, 2021 2:31 PM

The View hosts were jumping for joy this morning over a poll showing a surge in Americans who identify with the Democratic Party. The liberal hosts argued that Republicans had become the party of extremists while the average American liked all the great things President Biden was doing for the country.

Host Whoopi Goldberg introduced the positive findings for Democrats: “Senate Democrats are enjoying a new found popularity right now. A new Gallup poll shows the largest increase in Democratic Party affiliation in nearly ten years,” she touted before asking fellow liberal co-hosts why more Americans were “swinging left.”

Sunny Hostin rehashed her newfound favorite tirade about how the GOP is now the “extremist” party and Americans were finally rejecting it:

You know, I think, Whoopi, that this is a direct result of what happened with the, you know, former disgraced, twice impeached one-term president. I’ve said it before that you have a Republican party that I think is unrecognizable to those that are centrist Republicans, those that are um, just sort of these conservative Republicans that we knew before, right? Like the John McCain Republicans, the Republicans I think that Meghan grew up with. I've been reading John Boehner’s book. And he says in his book that the crazies have taken over. I think the Republican party is sort of this -- you know -- extremist, anti-scientist, nativist, embracing white supremacist, insurrectionist party at this point…

Joy Behar gave more credit to Democrats and Joe Biden for shifting the needle. “I think the average joe is seeing President Joe do things for Americans and they like it!” she said, citing support for COVID relief and higher corporate taxes. She asserted that Republicans have “come up with nothing” and all they cared was about suppressing votes and Dr. Seuss.

They [voters] see this party is trying to help American people. What a shock. What a novel idea. Actually helping people that pay taxes!” she gushed, before agreeing with Hostin that the “extreme party” is running the GOP.

Finally, Goldberg weighed in, making some dubious claims, such as Trump didn’t do much for Americans (uh, the economy?) and people liked Biden because he was taking responsibility and facing the border crisis -- that he created -- head on:

[O]ne of the reasons he may have won is because the guy we just put out of office did not do this country or Americans, very many Americans a bunch of favors, he didn’t do much for Americans and we're cleaning up a bunch of stuff now. People might be swinging towards Biden because he actually got the innoculations out. He's trying to figure out what to do at the border. He's not saying he's going to put it on somebody else. He's saying we may have to make other arrangements with the border, we have figure it out. He doesn't seem to shy away from the difficult things that we're talking about.

While the hosts cheered the good news for their side, none of them noted that the poll's findings were consistent with past polls taken at the beginning of both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama's first terms:

GALLUP: Democrats have had larger advantages in the past than they currently hold, including double-digit advantages throughout most of 2006 through early 2009. That period encompassed the end of the George W. Bush administration, when he was unpopular, and the election of Barack Obama as his successor. The party also had double-digit advantages around the time of Bill Clinton's election as president in late 1992 and early 1993. The prior nine-point Democratic edge in the fourth quarter of 2012 coincided with Obama's reelection.

Not to mention, considering how the media shifts its coverage sharply from negative to positive when a Democrat enters the Oval Office, are these findings really any surprise?

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Now, after four years of Republican White House [sic] Senate Democrats are enjoying a new found popularity right now. A new Gallup poll shows the largest increase in Democratic Party affiliation in nearly ten years. So people are seeming to be quite surprised by this. Sunny, why do you think this swing to the left seems to be happening?

SUNNY HOSTIN: You know, I think, Whoopi, that this is a direct result of what happened with the, you know, former disgraced, twice impeached one-term president. I think the Republican party is sort of this -- you know -- extremist, anti-scientist, nativist, embracing white supremacist, insurrectionist party at this point. Kevin McCarthy really needs to rethink this strategy that it's an open big tent party and all are welcome. Really? Are the Marjorie Taylor Greenes welcome? Are the Boeberts, welcome? Are the Matt Gaetzes welcome? That's what led to the alienation of these mainstream Republicans. They don't want these extremists. This is the first time since I think 2012 I think that there are so many more Democrats. There's a 9% difference in the Democrats. It's the largest advantage since 2012. That speaks volumes, right?

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Joy, what's your take on it? Do you think Republican voters were getting tired of things not getting done and not hearing solutions from their party?

JOY BEHAR: That's probably -- I think so. I think the average joe is seeing President Joe do things for Americans. They like it. They're tired of corporations not paying taxes and then in effect not getting anything done in the country. You know, what is it 82% are for infrastructure, 65% support higher taxes for corporations, 77% approve of the stimulus, the COVID stimulus. The Republicans have come up with nothing. Nothing. All they do is focus on Dr. Suess, gerrymandering and voter suppression. The American people are not stupid. They see this party is trying to help American people. What a shock. What a novel idea. Actually helping people that pay taxes. I think that's the problem they have and they'll continue to have it. As Sunny was pointing out, you know it's the extreme group running the Trump party at the moment. It's not helping us. People see it. They see it. I think that’s what’s going on.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: …[O]ne of the reasons he may have won is because the guy we just put out of office did not do this country or Americans, very many Americans a bunch of favors, he didn’t do much for Americans and we're cleaning up a bunch of stuff now. People might be swinging towards Biden because he actually got the innoculations out. He's trying to figure out what to do at the border. He's not saying he's going to put it on somebody else. He's saying we may have to make other arrangements with the border, we have figure it out. He doesn't seem to shy away from the difficult things that we're talking about…. We know you have history with this because we've read the books. We've seen the movies. We know that this party has had a lot to do with trying to prevent you from voting.
