To hear the media tell it - Donald Trump activated racists this election cycle, was singularly responsible for border violence and is literally going to kill us all by burning up the planet.
On November 26, NBC correspondent Hallie Jackson actually asked the president if he was “comfortable” with “tear gassing children” – even though he was merely continuing a border policy that existed under Barack Obama.
MSNBC analyst and Showtime’s The Circus host John Heilemann feared that a racist Trump was vindicated by the midterm results: “I think Trump wakes up tomorrow and says, ‘I campaigned on racism, xenophobia, fear of the other, paranoia, all that stuff. And the punishment I suffered was I got an enhanced majority in the Senate.’”
And CNN’s Jim Sciutto worried about Trump’s environmental policy putting an end to us all: “We don’t want to be slowly burned to death on our own planet here.”
Celebrities also took their shots at the President. ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel compared Trump to Superman’s arch villain Lex Luthor and comedian Sarah Silvermann called Trump an anti-Semitic “douchebag.”
The following are the worst liberal outbursts over the past month from lefty journalists and celebrities:
Scolding Trump For Employing Obama’s Tactics
“Are you comfortable tear gassing children, like what we saw at the border?”
— Correspondent Hallie Jackson’s question to Donald Trump as aired on NBC Nightly News, November 26.
“The same tear-gas agent that the Trump administration is taking heat for deploying against a border mob this weekend is actually used fairly frequently — including more than once a month during the later years of President Barack Obama’s administration, according to Homeland Security data.”
— The Washington Times reporter Stephen Dinan in November 26 article “Tear gas used once a month at border under Obama, DHS data shows deployments dating back years”
Blame Trump, Not Caravan For Any Violence
“He’s [Donald Trump] happy to have a situation that’s incendiary, that might lead to....one of the troops having to shoot someone. If he can provoke one violent confrontation in which someone who is a migrant looks as though they’re engaging in violence against our troops...he thinks that works for him.”
— NBC News National Affairs analyst John Heilemann on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, November 26.
CNN Logic: The Wall Worked, So We Don’t Need One?
“So, however many people rushed the border, 39 were arrested, they are going to be deported. No one breached the border. So shutting down the border worked and it also proves, that we don’t need a, I think, a border wall because the migrants made and went out of their way to go to the Tijuana entrance because the rest of the border was considered too hazardous, too dangerous to cross.”
— Host Alisyn Camerota on CNN New Day, November 26.
Fox News Peddling Trump’s Lies About Caravan
“One of the lies that it [Fox News] tells now, without any facts, is that this caravan is filled with dangerous people and they’re going to storm the border. That lie is okay if you’re a propagandist or a PR person, because you’re selling the brand, which is Donald Trump. We don’t do that. So they’re not equal views. And citizens need to understand, we are trying to tell them facts and what’s true, they are selling you a political view which will include lies if it serves their ends.”
— Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawick on CNN’s Reliable Sources, November 25.
Trump Is “Crashing and Burning Right” in Front of Us
“Trump has destroyed his own presidency and he is showing us his soul a little more every day or rather, some would say his lack of one...Time’s running out for the sake of history and for the sake of the conservative moment and one of the nation’s two political parties, good men and good women who want a future for the GOP need to stand up and speak out today. Or their fate will be fully intertwined with this man who is crashing and burning right before their eyes. Republicans, you think 2018 was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet.”
— Host Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, November 21.
Time to Get “Hysterical” About Climate Change!
“I actually think we should be hysterical....I think anybody who has children or anybody who can imagine having children and grandchildren. How can you look at them and think this is the kind of world that through our own inaction and our inability to do something that we’re going to leave them?”
— New York Times reporter Helene Cooper on NBC’s Meet the Press, November 25.
“I want to ask the question for folks at home. We have kids. We don’t want to be slowly burned to death on our own planet here. Is the human race running, in simplest terms, running out of time to take the measures necessary to rein in this rise in global temperatures?”
— Host Jim Sciutto discussing Trump’s environmental policy as aired on CNN Newsroom, November 29.
Those Stupid, Racist Trump-Supporting Americans
“People will say that they support him [Donald Trump] for reasons other than his racist language, which we don’t have time to go through, but there’s all sorts of things, starting with the launch of his campaign all the way up to the latest campaign, they way he demonized people trying to come to our country on the caravan. And they’ll say, ‘Well, I’m not racist. I just voted for him because I didn’t like Hillary Clinton.’...That doesn’t make you not racist. It actually makes you racist. If you support somebody who does racist things, that makes you racist. So I just want to establish that.”
— CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers on CNN Tonight, November 16.
“He’s promoting nationalism, divisiveness, trying to tear apart NATO, trying to tear apart the European Union in an ideology built on the kind of nationalism that led to World War I and then again to World War II and conflicts all over the world since then and....People who are sensible, who have a sense of history, who have a sense of what’s needed for the future of the world, from climate change to just stopping disastrous wars, they don’t respond well to Trump, but apparently a lot of Americans do and he’s going to keep pushing this line.”
— Former Newsweek and current Daily Beast reporter Christopher Dickey, in Paris, during coverage of commemoration of 100th anniversary of end World War I as aired on MSNBC Live, November 11.
Ramos Rooting for “Wonderful” Rudeness Against Conservatives
“There’s an entire current within the United States that has emerged in opposition to Donald Trump but that are doing wonderful things. You have the Dreamers, these kids that arrived here undocumented, that have organized wonderfully, that go into senators’ and congressmens’ offices. They don’t allow them to eat in restaurants and harass them wherever they go.”
— Univision senior news anchor Jorge Ramos on Spain’s El Intermedio, November 13. (As translated from original Spanish broadcast.)
Shut Up You Religious Gun Nuts with Your “Thoughts and Prayers”
“Thoughts and prayers....I’m sorry. That should be outlawed. I know it’s well intended in some cases....It’s a throwaway line by a staffer who knocks off some script, some product, some wordage for somebody political to make it sound like they give a damn.”
— Host Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s Hardball, November 8.
“The only consensus there is, is in a canard, and here it is: ‘First, I would like to offer thoughts and prayers,’ because that’s what you do when you offer thoughts and prayers. You mock those who lost loved ones because if you gave it any thought at all, you would never walk away from any of these without figuring out a better way to deal with them. And prayer – you think leaving it to God is the answer? We pray for strength.”
— Host Chris Cuomo on Thousand Oaks, California bar shooting as aired on CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time, November 9.
It’s a “Coup” for President to Fire Own Employee
‘What we saw [Attorney General Jeff Sessions being fired] today, is a kind of coup against the rule of law, a kind of action that you see in a tin-pot dictatorship....this is anti-democratic...we now have a President of the United States who is willing to totally undermine the system of justice in this country for his own ends.”
— CNN political analyst Carl Bernstein on CNN’s AC360, November 7.
“Heartbreaking” That There Was No Blue Wave
“This is heartbreaking, though. It’s heartbreaking. The hope has been that the antibodies would kick in. That this infestation of hatred and division would drive response from the American people in both parties and say no and no more. That does not seem to be happening tonight. It’s not a blue wave, but it’s a blue war. We have to continue the fight forward. But I think that sense of helplessness, that has really fueled a lot of this outrage and outpouring from Democrats may still be there tomorrow even if we have the House.”
— Political analyst Van Jones on CNN’s Election Night in America, November 6.
Even When Dems Lose, They Win!
“Even some of the candidates who came up short aren’t being counted out. Instead, getting buzz as future stars of the Democratic Party, including Beto O’Rourke, who put up a tough fight against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz in Texas....And Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who went down in defeat in his battle for Florida governor, but keeping the fighting spirit.”
— Correspondent Kristen Welker on NBC’s Today, November 7.
“Vindication” for Trump’s “Racism” and “Xenophobia”
NBC and MSNBC National Affairs analyst John Heilemann: “You noticed yesterday, he finally in the last closing hours was like, ‘The economy, very good.’...And then back to racism and xenophobia, on stage with Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Jeanine Pirro like the four horseman of apocalypse on television last night....I think Trump wakes up tomorrow and says, ‘I campaigned on racism, xenophobia, fear of the other, paranoia, all that stuff. And the punishment I suffered was I got an enhanced majority in the Senate, and the two black candidates who everybody cared about lost.’”...
Host Stephen Colbert: “It’s a vindication.”
— CBS’s Late Show, November 6.
Trump has “Activated” White Supremacists...
“Ultimately, when people go into the voting booth and whether they vote Democrat or Republican, and if they vote Republican, they are saying, ‘We are okay with the message coming from this party. We are okay with the President using racism against migrants coming from Central America.’”
— Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart on MSNBC Live With Craig Melvin, November 6.
“Military units are activated. Cancer cells are activated. Explosives are activated, too. Donald Trump is hardly responsible for the existence of white supremacy, misogyny, nativism or anti-Semitism in America, but his politics enables and thrives on their resurgence.”
— Washington Post non-fiction book critic and former economics editor Carlos Lozada in November 1 article.
...and Chosen “Racism Over a Strong Economy”
“[Republicans are] lying through their teeth. They’re spreading the big lie. They are attacking non-white people. And Donald Trump has chosen, he has chosen to choose racism, over a strong economy.”
— Co-host Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, November 6.
CNN = Pelosi’s PR Firm
“In many ways, Nancy Pelosi is the original Badass Woman of Washington.”
— November 13 tweet (from CNN’s official Twitter account) promoting correspondent Dana Bash interview with Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
Trump-Supporting Women Are Weird
“[Donald Trump] he realizes that women like him less than menstrual cramps. That’s why he said it. He now has, like, this moment where he says, gee. They don’t like me because do you see the numbers? The women are out there voting in droves. He now realizes that...The women who still like him say that he is a protector. A hero....They don’t know the difference between a predator and a protector because as far as I can tell, he is the one grabbing women by the you- know-what.”
— Co-host Joy Behar on ABC’s The View, November 6.
Conservatives “Hot and Bothered” By “Brown Liberal Woman”
Co-host Ana Navarro: “What they’re doing is making her [incoming socialist Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] star brighter, getting her famous, giving her more of a spotlight. She maybe can’t afford rent in Washington D.C. right now, but is she living for free in the conservatives’ head! They are obsessed with this woman. I mean really guys, get a hobby. I think they’re bothered – hot and bothered by a young, brown, liberal woman who is unapologetically liberal and that’s what she is.”
Co-host Joy Behar: “It’s the democratic socialism. It’s the word socialism that drives them nuts. The firefighters, that’s socialism in California by the way.”
— ABC’s The View, November 16.
Horrified By Trump Tear-Gassing
“Don’t know how you get lower than tear gassing babies. But if anyone can, Trump will find a way. We must never get used to the horror that is this President.”
— November 25 tweet by actor/director Rob Reiner.
“You tear-gassed women and children, asswipe! And on Thanksgiving weekend, you piece of shit, asshole, motherfucking, evil-creature-person.”
— November 25 tweet by actress Alyssa Milano.
Please Save Us From Donald “Lex Luthor” Trump!
“Can I tell you how we feel?....Do you remember the first Superman movie, Christopher Reeve, when he gave up his powers to save Lois Lane’s life and then he was powerless and then he got beat up in a diner and he had to get his powers back to come save us from Lex Luthor? That’s what we need from you and your husband!”
— Host Jimmy Kimmel to former First Lady Michelle Obama on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, November 15.
Railing Against “Douchebag” Domestic Terrorist President
“In a time where anti-Semitic crime is up 57 percent since this douchebag has taken office, it is not lost on me that I am very lucky that I get a star and I don’t have to sew it on my clothes.”
— Actress/comedian and host of Hulu’s I Love You America Sarah Silverman discussing her getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as aired on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, November 9.
Actress Sarah Silverman: “It’s been exactly two weeks since he [Donald Trump] announced he was a nationalist and in that time there’s been two mass shootings and 14 bombs sent to every single person that he targets in his speeches, his rhetoric, over and over again. He knows he can start a fight and he doesn’t have to finish it because someone else will finish it for him and that’s his role in domestic terrorism.”
Host Bill Maher: “Now that the fascists are in the White House though, I’m glad some liberals have guns.”
— HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, November 9.
Don’t Let Those Racist Republicans Have All the Fun
“We had a really great night. And I think, you know, when Republicans win, they go celebrating in the streets like racists start, like throwing parades for themselves. And we’re punishing ourselves. But we had a really great night so let’s be happy for five minutes.
— Comedian/actor Billy Eichner on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, November 7.
Fondly Reminiscing About Old Anti-Trump Tweets
Host Stephen Colbert: “You famously tweeted about Donald Trump. And if I can get straight this, this is after Charlottesville, right? And you said Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself with other white supremacists.”
Former ESPN host and current The Atlantic writer Jemele Hill: “Yep. Show me the lie.”
Colbert: “Right, right. I think a tweet that has held up like a fine wine.”
— CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, November 15.
Under “Daily” Attack From The Donald
“In the last three years, since Donald Trump announced his presidency, our families have been under attack. And so, it’s much harder to keep your head in the sand when it’s daily, when it’s hourly, when your families and your children, and your communities are being painted out to be non-Americans.”
— Actress America Ferrera on NBC’s Today, November 5.
