Networks Skip Biden Claiming Nobody Uses the Word ‘Tornado’ Anymore

During a Tuesday press conference in New Jersey, President Biden stumbled over his words and wound up claiming that people no longer use the word “tornado.” While this peculiar moment has been covered by a handful of news outlets that aren’t right wing by any stretch of the imagination, the Biden-friendly broadcast TV networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) have avoided discussing it entirely, even though all three offered extensive coverage of his trip.

The members of Congress know from their colleagues in Congress that, you know, the, looks like a tornado — they don’t call them that anymore — that hit the crops and wetlands in the middle of the country in Iowa, in Nevada, I mean it’s just across the board.

All three broadcast networks covered Biden’s trip to the northeast in their Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning newscasts, which included clips of him speaking at a press conference and surveying the damage wrought by Hurricane Ida. Yet none gave any airtime to this strange moment.

Would these networks have shown the same courtesy to a Republican president? That’s not a rhetorical question; the answer is no. It’s nice to be a Democrat.

For anyone trying to make sense of Biden’s remark, the prevailing theory is that he had been searching for the term “derecho,” which is another variety of wind storm that can actually cause tornadoes. And last year a derecho did ravage the town of Nevada, Iowa, which unlike the state of Nevada, actually is “in the middle of the country” as Biden stated.
