Nasty Colbert Denigrates DeSantis: 'Doesn’t Care if His Voters Live or Die'

August 13th, 2021 1:23 PM

On Thursday’s Late Show, leftist host Stephen Colbert once again took it upon himself to take shots at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). The so-called comedian gleefully touted President Biden forgetting the Republican's name when a reporter asked Biden to respond to DeSantis saying “I am in the way to block too much interference from the federal government."

This resulted in Colbert making a joke that DeSantis didn’t care if his voters died: “Mr. President, show some respect. He should be addressed by his full title: Governor who...doesn't care if his voters live or die.” The liberal audience then broke into applause.

Colbert then proceeded in his rant: “This week, this week, Florida, the sunshine state, had to ask the Biden administration to send hundreds of ventilators to Florida. That must have been an awkward call considering last week, DeSantis said this to Biden: 'I don't want to hear a blip about Covid from you.'

“Well, governor, it looks like it’s your turn to eat blip,” Colbert sneered, prompting more cheering and applause.

The clip of DeSantis saying he didn’t want to hear a blip about COVID from Biden was taken out of context for the sake of “humor.”

Placed in the full context, DeSantis was calling out Biden for being a hypocrite when it comes to COVID, particularly when it came to outbreaks among illegal immigrants entering the U.S.. "Why don’t you do your job?" the Florida Republican said during a press conference on August 4. "Why don't you get this border secure? And until you do that, I don’t want to hear a blip about COVID from you, thank you."

"This is a guy who ran for office saying he’s going to shut down the virus," DeSantis added. "And what has he done? He’s imported more virus from around the world by having a wide open southern border."

Colbert then took a final shot at the Florida governor, juvenilely saying he had “blip for brains.”

CBS's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
08/12/21
11:42:30 p.m. Eastern

STEPHEN COLBERT: This huge surge doesn't seem to concern Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, seen here boasting the highest number he can count to. (Booing) DeSantis has clashed repeatedly with President Biden over Covid safety protocols. Last week, Biden said that if DeSantis wasn't willing to do anything about Covid, then he should get out of the way of people who will. That led to this exchange.

KELLY O'DONNELL: Do you have a response to Governor DeSantis, who is using your words about "Don't be in the way," and he's saying "I am in the way to block too much interference from the federal government." Your response, Mr. President?

JOE BIDEN: Governor Who?

O'DONNELL: DeSantis.

COLBERT: Come on. Come on, ha, ha. Ha, ha, ha. But, come on, Mr. President, show some respect. He should be addressed by his full title: Governor who...doesn't care if his voters live or die. (Applause) This week, this week, Florida, the sunshine state, had to ask the Biden administration to send hundreds of ventilators to Florida. That must have been awkward call considering last week, DeSantis said this to Biden:

GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS: I don't want to hear a blip about Covid from you.

COLBERT: Well, governor, looks like it's your turn to eat blip. (Cheers and applause) But -- yeah, blip for brains.
