Courtney Hazlett over at MSNBC's "The Scoop" is reporting that thousands of "Us Weekly" subscribers have not only called the magazine to cancel their subscriptions -- some reports say up to 10,000 cancellations have occurred -- but have also contacted advertisers and expressed their outrage that they are advertising with the celebrity news magazine that would so blatantly try to destroy Governor Palin.
Hazlett is hearing that the editorial board of "Us Weekly" had thought they pegged it right that media pressure and attacks would see Palin pulled from the McCain ticket even before her debut speech. Because the media had so quickly swarmed to destroy her, they thought she was toast before she even had the chance to accept the nomination.
“When Us went to print Monday night, it looked like the ticket was falling apart," says one magazine editor. “They went to print thinking Palin was dead in the water, and their mistake was thinking everyone who reads Us is a Democrat, when they’re not. Readers are loyal, but the base of a political party is more loyal. They don’t need to read the magazine when there’s so much press around it to know to be upset.”
Reports vary that from 3,000 to 10,000 subscribers have canceled their subscriptions to the gossip mag scaring the pants off of the magazine industry. In a time when sales and advertising are both down, the magazine industry does not need this sort of imbroglio, for sure. Hazlett also reports that these many thousands of cancellations came before the attacks on Palin in "Us Weekly" were even printed and distributed.
Five thousand might not seem like a large number at first glance, but it’s significant in the context of Us’ printing schedule. The magazine goes to press Monday night, which means subscribers don’t receive their issues until Friday or Saturday. In other words, the cancellations are coming from subscribers who, in many cases, haven’t even gotten their hands on the actual issue.
This speaks to the arrogance of the left leaning media establishment. They were so darn sure that they could successfully destroy Sarah Palin that they counted their chickens before they were hatched. They assumed that by the time they printed and shipped their magazine, they would have succeeded in forcing McCain to boot her from the ticket.
They didn't know how tough Sarah Palin really was, nor how outraged their readership would be.
To appropriate a saying, arrogance goeth before the fall. And "Us Weekly" just took a tumble.

September 5, 2008 - 06:34 ET by Andrew H.One can hope the displays are summarily ignored and sales drop to such an extent, the loss for US magazine would be significant--and maybe, just maybe, it will start a trend for other non-objective media outlets who do not report objective truth and present both sides fairly.

September 5, 2008 - 06:48 ET by mostlymoderateI want us all to think long and hard about this: what "sap" would actually pay good, hard-earned money on an US Weekly? The more you think about it, the more mind-bending it gets. I also recommend thinking about how sorry a persons life has to get when they decide one day, "damn, I think I will subscribe to US WEEKLY!" Scary!!

September 6, 2008 - 00:12 ET by stratmanOftentimes, magazines like these are freebies by the publisher.
Why free, because of the advertising reach into a captive audience waiting to be seen by their Physician or dentist.
Still, a medical office does not necessarily have to have any one magazine in their waiting room. Voicing your displeasure with the reading selection does matter, particularly if enough (whatever that means) complain.

Make no mistake, this headline was specificaly created for check out lines at the supermarkets. Yes, there in this to sell magazines but this was moreof a nod and a wink to the Obama campaign to sully this woman as quickly and broadcast to as many people as possible. Their aim is obviously women at the checkout lines. Sorry if this sounds sexist, but it is what it is.
Do conservatives a favor. When you see this rag at a checkout line open it up and try and write down as many major advertisers as possible and contact them and complain. It's easy to do when the lies on the cover are so blatant! While your at it, bitch about it to whoever is checking you out.Let them know how we feel.Whatever you do, DON'T buy the magazine.

So this guy's excuse is that the story was breaking and there was so much information that they had to get to press, so they went to press with unsubstantiated allegations, no definite facts.
I guess it's better to get it to print first than it is to make sure it's right. I'll remember that next time I'm writing a term paper. Apparently I'm spending too much time on my research and editing.
The readers and advertisers might be able to b****slap some sense into them, but I'm not counting on it. And even if they do there will be no retractions nor corrections.
This instance reminds me of when the Gipper said, "They counted on America to be passive. They counted wrong."
If this isn't a wake-up call to many in the media, then there is little hope that the media will learn the lessons they so desperately need to learn.
I also have to agree with mostlymoderate about the caliber of person that subscribes to, let alone occasionally buys US Weekly...I know we all have guilty pleasures, but US Weekly?! C'mon!

Market forces at work
September 5, 2008 - 08:28 ET by Iowa BoyThere's a reason that celebrity endorsers like Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan don't publicly mix in politics. They understand that half of their audience are likely members of the other party. So to avoid angering that customer base, they keep their political affiliations to themselves. [I believe MJ is a Democrat and it's rumored that TW is a Republican. Regardless, both stay out of the arena]
I used to love the Rolling Stone but I got tired of being told by that magazine that I was a racist, sexist, homophobic, religious zelot. The NY Times, LA Times, Boston Globe, et al have experienced continued declines in readership and advertising for the same reason. The reason US Weekly is so pronounced and sudden reflects the political times in which we live. Conservatives are mad as hell and they're not going to take it any more. So they vote with our dollars and, to paraphrase Bill Buckly, cancel their own g**damned subscriptions.

September 5, 2008 - 08:43 ET by usinkoreaI have the same feeling as the person who wrote the comment right after this one: I don't think it is just going to be Republicans who get pissed enough to "do something" about it. Most people in the country don't feel strongly toward one party or the other. They are nominal Reps or Dems either way.
A whole heck of a lot more people are basically non-affiliated moms -- or grew up watching a working mom struggle -- or are just going to finally say, "Enough is enough" with the bias, over-the-top coverage that has just gone too far this election.
The media has been pushing away simple regular average Americans for a long time. That is what the numbers show...not that they are just pushing away conservatives.
And this time, I think the average person is going to get about as upset as conservatives do......because it has simply been way too much.....

As we drove past a subdivision, I said to her that if the women across the country who live in houses like those, who are married and work for a living and raise children understand who Sarah Palin is and who she represents, this may be a landslide election for McCain/Palin. At least some of them are voting with their checkbooks now. Let see if it translates into votes in November.
Last I saw, McCain was still behind in the polls, so he and her have quite a bit of catch-up ahead of them.

Then we are going to be subjected to about two years of analysis as to why America remains such a bigoted place. Then this whole process will start again. The MSM will never realize that people looked into the heart of the man and saw someone that was too liberal and too inexperienced to be trusted with national defense and a fragile, but not broken economy. And there is no way they will ever see what their bias did for their man.

September 5, 2008 - 08:42 ET by cjbreischThis is a publisher that's in real trouble. I used to subscribe to Premiere magazine. It was a monthly mag on the movies, typically upcoming ones, with reviews, release dates, cast interviews, etc.
Well, one day I walked out to my mailbox, expecting to see my copy of Premiere, and it was US. Premiere had gone under and I was being sent US as a replacement to fill out the remainder of my subscription.
Thank God my subscription was nearly over. I only got two copies of US. Two more than I ever wanted to see.

They say mid-term elections are often the "throw the bums out" ones. And they said that the Dems are looking really good in the Congressional elections this time.
If the media keeps it up like this --- I won't bet money on that right now....

September 5, 2008 - 09:09 ET by d1carterI am constantly amazed at how incompetent many so called "journalists" really are. In other businesses these people would be on the street. The MSM is becoming a safe haven for those that cannot survive in the real world.
On the one hand, what do
September 5, 2008 - 09:12 ET by JasonCOn the one hand, what do these US Weekly readers expect? They have personally funded a magazine that is singularly devoted to embarassing, exposing, and figuratively eviscerating people in the public eye. Palin became an overnight political celebrity, and so the publishers produced what they thought their readership wanted; they certainly had no good reason to think otherwise. Indeed, there is something very strange and ironic when we read about USWeekly readers and "political outrage" in the same article.
But, in the aggregate, this is good. 10,000 readers canceled their subscriptions? Assuming they don't just move on to a comparable supermarket checkout rag, our national average IQ should rise markedly in the coming months.
I can only hope that some of the posters on this thread, who seem to thoroughly believe that Palin's All-American Small-Town image will make the election a landslide, will be proven wrong. She will have to work awfully hard to maintain the excitement she has built up in the past week. I would love to see a woman in the white house but, as I said with HRC, not this one. It doesn't do much to have an historical event in presidential history when you disagree with just about every facet of the person's political philosophy. I truly hope that undecided voters will not be swayed by irrelevant nonsense like "She's a hockey mom." Or worse, vote for her because they feel that after all the alleged media brutality, she deserves to win.

But US Weekly doesn't destroy everyone Jason
September 5, 2008 - 10:20 ET by Dee BunkThey propped up Obama. I agree that it's a trashy magazine and I've never purchased a copy. Liberals should get a clue. When the trailer trash magazines, bizarre unintelligent Hollywood celebrities, drug addicted rock and rap stars and elite out of touch media, are all endorsing a candidate - that alone should give you pause.
I can only hope that Palin's real image trumps Obama's fake one. I'd love to see a black man in the Presidency but not this one. This one would be the worst President ever and much like Jimmy Carter.

Sarah ought not to go on her sorry show, even if asked, just decline. It's not as if the zombies who watch her are going to vote for her anyway. Also, the band Heart fired off a letter to the RNC to not use the song "Barracuda" for Sarah Palin. WGAF what Heart says. What, are they going to lose fans because of it? You gotta have fans to lose 'em. Now, go back to Seattle, keep eating those Danish, and STFU.
