Carbon Sense Coalition: 'Earth Hour' Should be Renamed 'Dark Hour'

As previously reported by NewsBusters, there's an international climate change awareness promotion going on today called Earth Hour, and websearch giant Google is not only participating in it, but advocating its goals.

Presenting the other side of this argument is an organization called The Carbon Sense Coalition.

It wants "to restore balance and reason to the carbon debate, and to explain and defend the key role of carbon in production of most of our energy for heat, light, and transportation, and all of our food."

With this in mind, Carbon Sense on Friday strongly advocated observance of Earth Hour with a slight twist destined to bring a smile to climate realists across the globe (emphasis added throughout, h/t Heartland):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Carbon Sense Coalition today came out in support of “lights out” during Earth Hour (Saturday 29th) but claimed the time should be renamed “Dark Hour” and suggested that consumers should also forgo the consumption of gasoline and diesel during this period.

The chairman of “Carbon Sense”, Mr Viv Forbes, claimed that consumers should spend the hour they sit in the dark with no transport, air conditioning or hot coffee, remembering the contribution that carbon fuels have made to modern society.

And while contemplating this hour of darkness, they should steel themselves for the hour when, if the Global warming alarmists have their way, this will become a necessity not a nicety."

How delicious. But there's more:

All of this comfort, safety, convenience and prosperity is now threatened by hysterical claims that man’s carbon emissions can and should be stopped. Even though the weather records and the science deny the doomsday forecasts, the politicians, like lemmings, are leading us over the Greenhouse Cliff. Without the nuclear parachute, it will not be a pleasant fall." [...]

If we continue down this path, we can no longer assume that electricity will come at the flick of a switch. Consumers need to learn a new vocabulary for these bad new times – “load shedding, demand management, quota allocation, rolling blackouts, brownouts, emission permits, load prioritisation, interruptible customers, emergency customers, zone rota systems, power emergency declarations, priority lines, three-day-week rationing, power outages, grid instability, electricity rationing, operating reserve, maintenance shutdowns . . . .” - all the jargon of a power system in crisis, suffering from stagnant or falling capacity and growing demand."

Forbes then listed some modern day examples of how environmentalists around the world are threatening our ability to light, heat, and cool our houses:

“One of the first places to experience power shortages was, appropriately enough, California in the early 2000’s, where Deep Greens have harassed and delayed every practical method of generating base-load power. The operating reserve margin in California is now about 5% whereas 15% is considered safe. More “Dark Hours” can be expected there. And their Green Tick solar collectors will produce 12 Dark Hours EVERY DAY."

As a resident of California, I can attest to the accuracy of Forbes' analysis, for environmentalists in this state have for decades interfered with virtually every effort to expand the energy grid as our population has exploded.

With this in mind, Forbes offered this marvelous conclusion:

To steal a phrase from my friend, Rod Bates: “On Saturday night, after they have turned off their lights, I suggest the participants in Earth Hour wander down to the nearest beach, pee into the sea and observe what effect it has on the tide.”

This will illustrate the effect that cutting man-made carbon emissions will have on future climate.”

Amen.

Readers are advised to take this opportunity to spend an hour recognizing just how much of your lifestyle you owe to that which folks on the left and in the media are currently demonizing and trying to destroy.

While you meditate, consider the words offered by Rush Limbaugh Friday on this very subject:

I am all for innovation, invention, creativity. I am all for this is this magical new alternative energy that will replace oil. I'm all for it. But ain't there. We're nowhere close. Oil is the cheapest, it is the most abundant, as I have pointed out timeless times, it is the cheapest, it is the most abundant, it is the most efficient fuel source we have. It is the fuel of the engine of freedom and democracy. Biofuels. There are more and more stories that are hitting the decks here, these biofuels are just causing all kinds of damage. They are not cost efficient whatsoever. They are using more energy to produce them than they save in their usage. I've got a big story here, in Norway, 400% more water is being used. You ought to see the price of rice worldwide. There are rice shortages. Rice grows in water. All of these alternative fuel sources, they sound so wonderful, wind farms, diddly-squat. Solar, fine. But nothing is out there yet that is going to replace oil. And the trashing of oil and with such phrases as "no blood for oil" and so forth is dangerous because oil has led to our freedom and our advancement and our prosperity. You ought to stop and think about just how relevant it is and how dependent we are on oil, not for wherever it comes from. We're dependent on oil for our very freedom. We are dependent on it for our very security. We are dependent on it for our lifestyle and our ability to grow. It is the blood flow of the United States and of the free world. There's nothing anywhere near out there that is in quantity or in cost that's anywhere near to replacing it. [...]

May I have your attention please, folks, on the business of alternative fuels? Look at me. Look-k-k at me. The United States is not a zero-sum game. Meaning when somebody gets hired, it does not mean somebody gets fired. Meaning when somebody earns an additional five dollars, somebody has lost an additional five dollars. It doesn't mean that it's either oil or else. The whole concept of the United States, the capitalist system, is the free market -- and the free market is fueled by freedom! Freedom leads to ingenuity, invention, entrepreneurism, and what is the pursuit? The pursuit is profit. The profit derives from success. Now, there's some charlatans in our free market. The people in carbon offset businesses are sharks. They are pure frauds! They are convincing people to pay them X-amount of dollars for whatever, to plant trees, to soak up the additional carbon footprint of what is "allowed." Allowed by who? Who says that there is a maximum carbon footprint? There is no such law, there is no such standard, because we have freedom!

If you want to have a 30,000-squarefoot house and a big-ass swimming pool and a bunch of outdoor lights and you can afford it and you pay for it, and there are people that provide it. End of story. You are not guilty! You are not guilty. No, you are not. Just because somebody else doesn't have a 30,000-square-feet house, doesn't have a big-ass swimming pool and outdoor lights, doesn't mean they're innocent and you are guilty. As this relates to alternative fuels, oil is the most plentiful energy source we have. It's the most efficient. But while oil is being used, and while it is being exploited, the United States taxpayer, ladies and gentlemen, already spends billions of dollars on alternative energy research -- and you can bet that the private sector is investing in it, too, and do you know why? Because we are a growing country and everybody needs energy! We're not going to stay the United States if we start reducing energy usage. Conservation is not the answer. So because it free market's percolating and gurgling and burbling out there, somewhere in this mix will come the magical alternative fuel source. It may not be for a hundred years, it may not be for 50, but it will happen, and it will happen all by itself...if we stay free. [...]

Oil is not the enemy. We can peacefully co-exist with oil while looking for the miracle alternative fuel source that everybody wants, but we're going to have to do that while using oil. Oil is not the enemy, folks. It's our buddy.

The Carbon Sense Coalition

The Carbon Sense Coalition ...suggested that consumers should also forgo the consumption of gasoline and diesel during this period.

Okay, so while all of my lights are turned on, and assuming I haven't consumed too many adult beverages, I am going to fire up my 2.5 ton German gas guzzler and drive around my subdivision and the surrounding areas, just to see how many are actually participating in the hour of darkness.

Maybe I'll take my gas can along and hit the QuikTrip and fill it up, too. After all, we are supposed to be combining errands, are we not?

Wow, this is turning out to be a pretty good birthday after all. :-)

  I have told peopel

I have told peopel here at work that I am protesting by turing all my electric gagets on for the hour......(not remebering i will be at work) anyway ...I was called; stupid, mean, not careing for our mother earth, cruel, just being difficult, ect ect.

What is the difference of me protesting this "earth hour" by just turning on all my electric things, then PETA showing kids pictures of dead animals and buckets of blood in front of McD's or KFC.

We DO live in the United States, right? I DO have a right to protest, why is my protest any diffierent.    I should be respcted in my protest and given a wide berth, right?

rd311,

I have encountered similar reactions myself from time to time, as I have a serious sarcastic streak in me when it comes to what I consider to be empty gestures on the part of the hard-core lefties who live among us. I am one of those people that enjoys exploiting the things that some are offended by. The kookier their sacred cows are, the more I enjoy skewering them. I don't know, but some might consider that a personality disorder. I consider it asserting my freedom as an American.

I remember back when the Rush Limbaugh orange juice controversy sprang up. Some group or other got their panties in a knot over the fact that some organization in Florida was promoting the stuff on Rush's show. Of course, they found this situation to be utterly intolerable and decided to launch a boycott on orange juice.

At the time I was living in an area of Atlanta that was near places that a lot of college students did their shopping. I hit my local Kroger one afternoon and noticed some protesters out in front of the store holding up signs suggesting we refrain from purchasing orange juice, etc., etc.

I parked very near them, so there was no way they wouldn't see me when I came out of the store. After getting the few items I had actually stopped in for, I went by the chilled juice area and got four gallon jugs of the stuff. I made sure to take them out of the bags as I left the store.

You should have seen the looks on their faces as I wheeled that cart up to my car with four bright orange gallon jugs of o.j. and loaded them into the trunk.

The best part was, this was on a weekday, and Rush's show was actually on at the time. I opened the windows and turned the radio up really loud as I drove right past them exiting the parking lot, smiling and waving as I went buy. I maintained that smile all the way to my house.

______________

The difference between lefty protesters and myself is, I have never once asserted the opinion that they should not be allowed to publicly express their views, no matter how idiotic I may consider them to be. They, however, would not extend me the same courtesy.

Sadly, "classical" liberalism, which respected the rights of all Americans, has given way to something far more sinister, "modern" liberalism, which is rather selective in who gets what rights, particularly in the are of freedom of expression..

We see evidence of this growing daily in government schools and college campuses all over America. Students who have the audacity to assert ideas that are decidedly politically incorrect, are often intimidated into silence by not just their fellow students, but teachers and administrators as well. This does not bode well for the future of our republic.

It would be easy to singularly blame the lefties for this unfortunate situation, but I blame conservatives far more here, as it is they who have become so afraid they might offend someone they cave at the first sign of pressure.

If you do not assert your rights, you will someday lose them.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

Neither Modern, Nor Liberal . . .

"something far more sinister, "modern" liberalism,"

I realize the the PC term for these crazies is "liberal" or "progressive," but there is nothing modern, liberal or progressive about their ideology.

Even the textbook definition of communism is far too polite.

A more accurate descriptor of the current American Enviro-Left would be more along the lines of creeping totalarian Stalinism, or for those who prefer the bite-size version of the name, Neo-Stal.

ABC 2008 (Anybody But Clinton)

How about this word?

Enviro-fascist. Using the concept of fascism tying in with the environmentalist movement.

That's Only Part Of It . . .

Unfortunately, this ideology isn't limited to watermelon (green on the outside, red on the inside) environmentalists. For other examples, see "universal" health care, tax policy, etc, etc . . .

ABC 2008 (Anybody But Clinton)

JSS,

Actually, my reference to them as "modern" liberals was just an attempt to separate them chronologically from the classical variety, which was based primarily on the libertarian model. "Modern" liberalism, as I see it, is based squarely on the Marxist/Leninist model.

I too realize that many contemporary liberals are rather illiberal in their overall outlook, and the term "progressive" is anything but, as there is nothing "progressive" about Marxist ideology.

And yes, Neo-Stal works just fine for me.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

Neo-liberals vs. Libertarians

The fact that the Democratic party, socialists and communists have been able to hijack the term liberal for their neo-liberal agenda which is really a socialist/communist one is the biggest propaganda victory they have ever pulled off. Educating many so-called "Democrats" that they are really libertarians is probably the best service we can do for this country. I at least repespect libertarian positions even when I do not agree with all of them (immigration) because they respect my freedom to disagree. I would much prefer the two strongest parties in the country being Republicans and Libertarians.

"Progessive" is another propaganda term they are exploiting because what kind of "backwards person" would be against "Progress"? To them destroying capitalism and enacting socialism/communism is "progress".

"Neo-liberals", "Modern Liberals", "Neo-Socialists", "Neo-Communists", "Neo-Marxists", "Neo-Leninists", "Anti-Capitalists" and "Progressives" are all in the same boat though they will vocally disagree until you hold them to their actual beliefs and positions.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

PT -- well

PT -- well adjudicated.

One thing worth mentioning is how REACTIONARY these so-called "progressives" are.

They worship at the altar of demonstrably FAILED socialist ideas rooted firmly in the past.

That's about as reactionary as it get. They are to progress what Stalin was to humanitarianism.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

The problem is...

That libertarians make up somewhere around 15 percent of the population, depending on how you try to measure such a nebulous thing. The most optimistic estimate I've ever seen was 26%, and I think that one's not very accurate. Under a "2 party system," the "choice" we get is likely to be between socialist and statist, just as we've seen this time.

I was in high school during

I was in high school during the first Bush presidency and the first Iraq war. I don't remember what the topic was but my history teacher (who was a former hippie and damn proud of it) said something that was obviously false and I called her on it. She got within an inch of my face while I was seated and did her best demon face while rambling on about how this war was about oil in such a manner that her spit was hitting my face. I was a little stunned by her reaction and probably looked like the guy in the chair in the old Maxell ad as she was ranting.

First day of class she asked how many republicans were in the room and how many democrats (now remember this is high school and most hardly looked at a newspaper). But it was about 50/50. Last day of class she asked the same question. I was the only republican left apparently. But most likely the others were too intimidated. Regardless of the reason, she had such a disturbing look of satisfaction on her face. Although I got an A in the class. So she wasn't a complete hell spawned creature.

Apache,

At least you got an A in the class. Many people's grades suffer for their political views. I know some of mine did, particularly in college. At least you got out with your mental faculties in order. I cannot say the same for many people I know.

LOL-Hell, I'm not even real sure about me.

After all, the path of least resistance is relatively painless to most. Sadly, that is the path too many have chosen.

Ever notice how the left

Ever notice how the left constantly screams about the right to dissent?  And remember that dissent is patriotic.

But just challenge their empty-headed logic and socialist, America-hating ideas, and you'll see exactly what they mean when they talk about "dissent".

Dissent is only valid if it promotes Marxism, communism, and socialism.  If we excercise our right to dissent against something as idiotic as "earth hour", then we're Nazis!

As we have a few thunderstorms in the area right now, our power might go off as well. What a shame that would be. :-^)

One of our vendors in China

One of our vendors in China recently had to move their operations due to allocation of electricity by the government. It cost them money as well as our company. It caused delays in delivery and many other incoveniences. Apparently, only so much electricity is given to areas, even if other companies move into an area. The allocation is split with the new company, therefor, there is a lot of moving around to where more electricity is available. It is so frustrating that so many here want to handcuff our citizens and businessed in this way.

Google's Dark Hour Stupidity

Google has asked for input and ideas about Earth Hour; here are my ideas:

Dear Google,

I propose that you shut down your severs, your site, everything, for one hour. This would truly display your disdain for capitalism, you bunch of silly little Marxist twits!

O.K. seriously,

As an alternative, just execute your 16,800 employees. This would be the equivalent reduction in energy usage from the single hour for all 6 billion people an earth. Well, it would only be about 40 years worth of energy-use (i.e., life), but it's a start, and it would make me feel a lot better.

In the end isn't that what this is all about? Oh, and communism, can't forget that!

America won the cold war, by the way, so that you have the freedom to create wealth and pretend to advocate stupid causes like this one--you atheistic, pinko, meatheads!

Thanks for soliciting my input,

Hmm. Something's wrong.

Nobody has said the words "dork hour" yet! ;)

Methinks I...

From the heart of the Ohio Blizzard of 2008, Columbus OH, where 20 inches of snow fell:

Courage!

I didn't know for sure when

I didn't know for sure when Earth Hour would be so I told my daughter to turn on the lights in her house at 8PM. With 3 kids that happens every night at this time. At 8 tonight I will turn on all my lights including the outside lights for 1 hour. I may even go for a drive in my 1988 Ford Ranger tree feeder just to show had silly this is.

I worked for the power company for 23 years. They are not going to shut down any units for one hour just because people turn off their lights. This is as silly as telling people not to buy gas one day a week. Let the dope smoking hippies go with out power for say a month and still it is not going to make a difference.

As a matter of fact here tonight it is going to get chilly. All that is saved by one hour of darkness will be eat up when the heat pumps come on.

If you ain't the lead dog, the scenery never changes.-Lewis Grizzard

Subterfuge

The entire issue is a ruse to hide the true aim of the Leftist movement - the world domination of socialism.

The socialists have a history of setting up causes that to oppose would make the opposer look like a villian.  To be against the New Deal and  the Great Society meant you were for the greedy and against the needy.  If you were against Affirmative Action, you were a racist.  To be against abortion meant you believe women should be subservient to a male dominated society.

Now, if you oppose their "solutions" for the problem they claim exists but for which they have no proof, then you are in favor of pollution, climatological disaster and the end of civilization.

This is an attack on freedom.  Is there a leader out there who recognizes this attact for what it is and will face it down?

mattm... Thanks for that

mattm... Thanks for that video of Reagan and his great words...and of course there isn't any leader like him that I can see in the near future that will attack this for what it is and will face it down...all three that are running are the same in this regard...we are in a real mess.

That's great that all those maggot-infested hippies are going dark for an hour.  That means we only have to smell them now.

group think

Those who pay the slightest attention to this latest "group think" exercise are the same ones who, if told it would reduce "global warming", would wear a piece of cow flop on their head as a hat and claim they were saving the planet. They would castigate and demonize anyone who dared to question them about their new hats. Their response to questions would be to ask, "And why aren't YOU wearing a cow flop hat? You must be a conservative!"

Meanwhile, I'm relocating to Seattle, my home at one time.  Seattle, while at the Same Latitude as Minnesota and Chicago, it has a very mild Climate, very few days below Freezing ..compared to Spokane, Minneapolis, etc.. . .Why is that ?

It is becasue of Water Vapor, the REAL Greenhouse Gas, the Cloud cover, and it has NOTHING to do with CO2 !!!

I mean Dan Rather said it was OK and....)

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and people were in their cars driving, pumping gas, and houselights were on.  I did notice that quite a few people had outdoor Christmas lights turned on where there were none the day before, and it's possible that it was in protest of earth hour. I hope so.

One McDonalds had a red LED sign outside reminding all who drove by to observe "Earth Hour 2008" by engaging in the blatant stupidity.  BTW, their lights were all on, and I don't know it this reminder was just for that McDonalds or if all McDonalds were required to display it.

I rarely eat at McD's, but if it was an across the board requirement by the pansies in central management, I'll add McD's to my forbidden list.  Too bad; I like their chocolate thick shakes.
