Is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration filled with climate change deniers?
Such seems likely to be alleged by hysterical alarmists in the press when and if they read a new study out of NASA which determined that "not all the large changes seen in Arctic climate in recent years are a result of long-term trends associated with global warming."
Goes quite counter to all the recent media reports, as well as assertions by Nobel Laureate Al Gore, that low ice conditions in the Arctic are all the fault of that despicable -- albeit essential to life and naturally occurring! -- gas carbon dioxide.
Of course, it's quite unlikely many climate alarmists will even hear about this study, for today's green media wouldn't want to do anything that destroys their illusion that there's a scientific consensus regarding this matter.
As such, consider yourself fortunate to be apprised of the highlights (emphasis added throughout):
A team of NASA and university scientists has detected an ongoing reversal in Arctic Ocean circulation triggered by atmospheric circulation changes that vary on decade-long time scales. The results suggest not all the large changes seen in Arctic climate in recent years are a result of long-term trends associated with global warming.
[...]
The team of scientists found a 10-millibar decrease in water pressure at the bottom of the ocean at the North Pole between 2002 and 2006, equal to removing the weight of 10 centimeters (four inches) of water from the ocean. The distribution and size of the decrease suggest that Arctic Ocean circulation changed from the counterclockwise pattern it exhibited in the 1990s to the clockwise pattern that was dominant prior to 1990.
Reporting in Geophysical Research Letters, the authors attribute the reversal to a weakened Arctic Oscillation, a major atmospheric circulation pattern in the northern hemisphere. The weakening reduced the salinity of the upper ocean near the North Pole, decreasing its weight and changing its circulation.
"Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said [James Morison of the University of Washington's Polar Science Center Applied Physics Laboratory].
Somehow I imagine Morison won't be interviewed by any of the major television networks any time soon, especially as the study concluded that this circulation pattern may already be reversing possibly leading to increased ice levels in this area in coming years:
The Arctic Oscillation was fairly stable until about 1970, but then varied on more or less decadal time scales, with signs of an underlying upward trend, until the late 1990s, when it again stabilized. During its strong counterclockwise phase in the 1990s, the Arctic environment changed markedly, with the upper Arctic Ocean undergoing major changes that persisted into this century. Many scientists viewed the changes as evidence of an ongoing climate shift, raising concerns about the effects of global warming on the Arctic.
Morison said data gathered by Grace and the bottom pressure gauges since publication of the paper earlier this year highlight how short-lived the ocean circulation changes can be. The newer data indicate the bottom pressure has increased back toward its 2002 level. "The winter of 2006-2007 was another high Arctic Oscillation year and summer sea ice extent reached a new minimum," he said. "It is too early to say, but it looks as though the Arctic Ocean is ready to start swinging back to the counterclockwise circulation pattern of the 1990s again."
Once again, another in a seeming litany of reports emerging offering scientific alternatives for climate change beyond it being all man's fault.
And folks wonder why so many people are skeptical concerning the anthropogenic impact on long-term weather patterns.
Of course, one thing's for certain: this news definitely won't make "An Inconvenient Truth" producer Laurie David happy!

Climate Models are the biggest Scam ever
November 14, 2007 - 21:42 ET by PopularTechAll the computer illiterates are convinced that because something is done on a "super computer" that costs "millions of dollars" it is infalliable. Pluging in biased, incomplete or flat out wrong data combined with poorly understood systems into a "model" that includes god knows how many guesses and assumptions will give you junk. Garbage in - Garbage out. I am a computer anaylst and can make a computer model do whatever I want by "tuning" it (adjusting variables until I get the answer I want). The more complex the model the more "mysterious" it seems. Processing more complex data in more complex ways via guessing gives you more complex junk results. But since the models have been "tuned" (guesstimated or deliberately altered to get the results you want) they get results that "seem" likely, except it is based on a complex serious of junk calculations.
The problem is computer models need exact information (data and the correct procedure to process the data) to get exact answers, without that you get crap, period. The public gives computer climate models this mystical aura because they are largely computer illiterate about how they actually work and when they hear the term "computer" they do not want to sound or feel stupid. Computers are logic machines, 1 + 1 must = 2.
Imagine trying to use the wrong numbers to get a right answer on a caculator but you do not know if you are to add or multiply those numbers.
What the modelers do is they keep playing with the numbers in a much more complex way until they think they guess right. A useless exercise. These same climate models computers are used to predict your weather and you know how accurate they are after 3-5 days out. But damn! Al Gore and Gavin Schmidt can certainly tell your what the climate will be 50-100 years from now! Give me a break.
Why are we not turning to models to predict the future for everything? Because they can't, not even remotely. Some of them work "sort of" for very short term results (3-5 days) until all the data they are processing that is wrong combined with all the data they are missing and the millions of variables they are not accounting for start to kick in exponentially and wham - the model is wrong. No kidding.

"A Warming World"
November 14, 2007 - 14:56 ET by Agrarian-DecentralistThe NASA article also says, "Morison cautioned that while the recent decadal-scale changes in the
circulation of the Arctic Ocean may not appear to be directly tied to
global warming, most climate models predict the Arctic Oscillation will
become even more strongly counterclockwise in the future. 'The events
of the 1990s may well be a preview of how the Arctic will respond over
longer periods of time in a warming world,' he said."
Notice that final reference to "a warming world"? Not language normally employed by a non-believer, is it? Kind of makes me almost suspect that Mr. Sheppard is guilty of selective reporting.
You make a weak and strained "point", Agrarian
November 14, 2007 - 15:40 ET by RJThe lead paragraph of the article (which Noel linked to, BTW) said "The results suggest not all the changes seen in Artic climate in recent years are a result of long term trends associated with global warming." ....a point reinforced later in the article.
Please describe how Noel following up on that is "selective."
Further, a reference to a "warming world" falls within the article's concept of natural cycles, and doesn't automatically or necessarily have anything to do with the idea of man-made global warming.

Neither does it imply that we are facing a world wide disaster of unprecedented proportions simply because the globe may once again be warming, just like it has numerous times in the past, nor does it say we should cripple the global economy, return to the days of a less advanced civilization, and waste billions(trillions?) of dollars on worthless solutions that even the mighty IPCC admits will have little or no effect on the alleged problem.

Selective reporting would have not included the link to the article. Furthermore, skeptics don't deny the planet has been in a warming trend. We just don't believe man's responsible.
Honestly, if this is your level of understanding concerning this matter, maybe you shouldn't comment on this subject until you are more educated.
On the other hand, maybe you should make such errant observations whenever the fancy strikes you, as it deliciously proves the point as to why it's so easy for folks like Al Gore, Sheryl Crow, and Laurie David -- who possess not one iota of formal training regarding this matter -- to be able to pull the wool over so many eyes.

November 28, 2007 - 18:10 ET by PopularTechAl Gore only has a B.A. in Government (no higher degree achieved, no science degrees)
The Education of Al Gore (The Washington Times)
"Mr. Gore's high school performance on the college board achievement tests in physics (488 out of 800 "terrible," St. Albans retired teacher and assistant headmaster John Davis told The Post) and chemistry (519 out of 800 "He didn't do too well in chemistry," Mr. Davis observed) suggests that Mr. Gore would have trouble with science for the rest of his life. At Harvard and Vanderbilt, Mr. Gore continued bumbling along.
As a Harvard sophomore, scholar Al "earned" a D in Natural Sciences 6 in a course presciently named "Man's Place in Nature." That was the year he evidently spent more time smoking cannabis than studying its place among other plants within the ecosystem. His senior year, Mr. Gore received a C+ in Natural Sciences 118.
At Vanderbilt divinity school, Mr. Gore took a course in theology and natural science. The assigned readings included the apocalyptic, and widely discredited "Limits to Growth," which formed much of the foundation for "Earth in the Balance." It is said that Mr. Gore failed to hand in his book report on time. Thus, his incomplete grade turned into an F, one of five Fs Mr. Gore received at divinity school, which may well be a worldwide record."

Luna: The only problem
November 15, 2007 - 13:53 ET by Mike From CanmoreLuna:
The only problem with that theory is the chances of carbon output going down in the next 30 years is essentially NIL. What would they be able to stand on to crow? However, if they manage to get the policies in place i.e. put the socialist schemes like Kyoto in place using things like the pre-cautionary principle, etc., good luck removing them. DDT and the chrysotile asbestos have been banned based on manufactured data, factoids and pseudocrisis probably never to return despite the benefits to society. Once carbon taxes or caps get in place gov'ts will become addicted to them and the anti corporate crowd will crow about the earth on life support and they'll never go away. That is why this has to be fought now. Unfortunately, very little of the populace understands the science. It'll never be won on the science side. The warmers avoid debates in science because they can't win. Therefore, it must be fought in the political arena on the basis of how it attacks personal freedoms and personal wealth. The warmers know this. Hence their political positioning with the Democrats. If this gets into place, the cost, and not just financial, to every person will be one of the largest we've ever experienced.
Regarding politicians, I refer to a friend of mine who is a politician. He said to me in confidence. We were speaking in reference to global warming; "There are 2 kinds of politicians. Those who know AGW is a scam and those who are stupid.".
I LOVE that comment.

November 22, 2007 - 06:53 ET by riff_raffI'm confused by these liberal, anti-capitalist, environmentalists.
On one hand, they claim the world is rapidly running out of oil. I believe they call it the "peak oil" theory. They giddily proclaim that in 20 to 30 years, there won't be any oil left at all.
On the other hand, they claim that burning of fossil fuels, primarily by gas-guzzling domestic SUV's, is causing the earth to get warmer, and in 100 years the earth will be untolerably hot.
Now I'm no math wiz, but if it's going to take 100 years for global warming to be a problem, and yet we're going to run out of oil in only 20 to 30 years, doesn't the whole fossil-fuels-causing-global-warming thing become a non-issue?
