What are 100,000 Trees among Friends?

Live Earth or Live Al (as opposed to the version we’ve always seen) was a laugh riot. Lots of know-nothing rockers interspersed with juvenile Youtube-esque videos made for a day few could survive without nausea. It was a celebration of hypocrisy on a global scale and for NBC it was a marathon contribution to lefty causes. (Anyone think the Fairness Doctrine would ever stop something left-wing like this?)

The kicker comes courtesy of our friends at Sunday’s Washington Post. Matt Bellamy from the band Muse called the event “private jets for climate change.” And John Buckley of Carbon Footprint, an eco group that helps firms cut their footprint, said “We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effects of Live Earth.”

There were a few other highlights:

  • Dollars and no sense – For the video of Madonna’s “Hey you,” when words had the letter “S” in them, the video screen showed several of them with $ signs instead. I thought that summed up the concert very well. Al is coming for your money and since none of us has rock singer wallets, be afraid. Be very afraid.
  • Everywhere a sign – When singer Macy Gray performed, she had the words and symbols emblazoned on her dress. On her chest was “Darfur,” on her skirt was “Red Alert” and a big peace symbol was on her butt. I could make so many jokes about this, I’ll just pass and leave them to the able posters here. But I am reminded of an ancient Smothers Brothers song called “Map of the World.”
  • Bombs away – The band Linkin Park and comedian Chris Rock dropping the f-bomb. (Heck, after watching a few minutes, I sure wanted to do so.)
  • Moving the world – Madonna again, urged people: “If you want to save the planet, I want you to start jumping up and down.” Perhaps she was trying to cause her own planetary shift by having everyone jump up and down at once. Or maybe she was simply trying to guilt people into dancing to something not worth their time.
