Breaking down the front door of a suspected al-Qaeda stronghold in Fallujah took great courage. But even that fearless feat pales in comparison to the dangerous mission that Willie Geist undertook. The intrepid member of the Morning Joe crew ventured out onto the sidewalks of Manhattan's Upper West Side wearing . . . a McCain-Palin T-shirt, trying to drum up support for the Republican ticket. (h/t readers BondPlainBond and Steve.)
As Willie explained, it was all a good-natured goof. But the West Siders for the most part lived up to their stereotype of, as Willie described it, "a monolithic block of elitists," scorning Geist for his gall.
Two people did their best Pauline Kael impressions. Said one man: "I don't know anybody, of any intelligence, who would vote for him." A woman took the sentiment a step further. Asked by Willie whether she had any friends on the West Side supporting McCain, she answered "No. Cause if I did know people, well, they wouldn't be my friends."
Talk about celebrating diversity!
Back in the studio, Mike Barnicle had it right.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Mike Barnicle, very interesting. I thought liberals were supposed to be open-minded.
MIKE BARNICLE: You know, I don't know if they're open-minded or not, but clearly they are humorless. I mean, here's Willie Geist standing on a corner of the neighborhood where he lives, wearing a smile on his face and a T-shirt, McCain-Palin, with a TV over his shoulder. Folks: lighten up!

Blazer, use care here
October 31, 2008 - 09:48 ET by SentryDanBlazer, use care here. West Chicago is a town that is approximately 30 miles west of the city of Chicago and 5 miles to the west of Wheaton, the Dupage County seat. I believe that you were referring to the "West Side" of Chicago or at least I hope you were. I don't think the town of West Chicago would take too kindly to being associated with the 2 individuals you mentioned in your post.
West Chicago was my home for 5 years.

October 31, 2008 - 09:17 ET by HelenSYesterday, Rush read an article about crowds and their collective response to Obama. I went looking for it today and the only place I could get it to display the entire article was at this link.
It was in yesterday's Wall Street Journal and is called "Obama and the Politics of Crowds" by Fouad Ajami. Excellent read.
It says a lot about the herd mentality and the phenomenon that seems to be the reaction of large groups of people to such a mediocre and boring person as Obama.

I have zero (0) concern
October 31, 2008 - 10:20 ET by lnthompI have zero (0) concern that McCain might do anything to reduce my 20-year Navy VA benefits. Number 1, any President does not have that power. Number 2, there is a vast difference between voting against an increase (which is attaced to billions of dollars of useless port), and voting to reduce a benefit.
And if he should get a bill across his desk that includes an increase in my VA benefits, but also includes budget-busting pork, I hope that McCain, unlike G.W.Bush, would find the veto pen.
Bill Clinton was very bad for active-duty military and veterans. I know, I was there. B.H.Obama will be worse for both active-duty and for veterans. If he or you think bringing everyone home is supporting the troops you are sadly mistaken and don't understand what military service is about.

October 31, 2008 - 10:05 ET by BondPlainBondHappy Halloween!
Mika, in conversation not covered by the video clip, almost... almost said she found it "frightening". Her lips began to form the word and then she realized she was on camera and at MSNBC.
I'm still shaking my head about the disgusting Upper West Side reality hate show Willie didn't intend to uncover at all.
Bob Shrum, in the next hour, said something about wouldn't it be interesting to see how an Obama/Biden t-shirt played in a conservative area of the country. Willie offered his pleasant experience of meeting the very well-mannered and polite people of Tennessee while in an Obama/Biden t-shirt.
Heh. Suck it up, Shrum! Your hypothesis was proven hopelessly incorrect and invalid.
Back atcha Bond!
October 31, 2008 - 10:05 ET by BlondeHappy pumpkins to you.
Here's a little treat for you....some guy in Chapel Hill NC (apparently the only conservative there) got sick & tired of the Obamabots stealing his McCain/Palin signs....so he wired them for sound.
What sick parent would send a little kid to steal campaign signs? Oh wait....it's probably the Simple1.
In his own words (19 seconds): This man is qualified to be VP?
What does it take!
October 31, 2008 - 09:27 ET by Dan LaHoodyou gotta fly a couple of Jumbo Jets into buildings to get these morons attention?
Anyone who has ever heard Santayana's famous quote about History repeating itself is condemned to repeat it.
I am not surprised
October 31, 2008 - 09:34 ET by Gat New YorkGiven the fact that the news media in Manahattan is dominatd by pro-Obama TV broadcast and print newspaper media, what you see is a product of what people are only exposed to. Add to that the fact that the NYS GOP Party is in shambles.
More Accurate Word Needed
October 31, 2008 - 09:48 ET by NoMoreClintons"the NYS GOP Party is in shambles."
Uh, not exactly. We do control the state senate - a remarkable feat in such a blue state.
wait and See
October 31, 2008 - 09:52 ET by Gat New YorkWith Patterson campaigning he could tip enough elections to swing the Senate to Democrats. Regarding GOP Congressmen, Pete King is it on Long Island which used to have almost entirely GOP Congressmen, and he may be one of the very few left from NYS.
Patterson is vulnerable in the next election. If it were being held soon who would there be in the GOP that could challenge him and what would be their chances?
Hey Gat, we have a nice
October 31, 2008 - 10:33 ET by Scuba DudeHey Gat, we have a nice Republican stronghold here in Staten Island. If things get to rough we'll just blow the bridges.
C'mon over! : )
Typical New Yorker
October 31, 2008 - 10:56 ET by Gat New YorkI'm sorry.
We're always overlooking Staten Island!
LOL, if the dump was still
October 31, 2008 - 11:01 ET by Scuba DudeLOL, if the dump was still open I'd say just follow the stench. : P
Shameful Display
October 31, 2008 - 09:51 ET by BondPlainBondI'm still stunned at the ease with which the hoty-toity elitists voiced their vehement and deeply rooted hate for Republicans, Senator McCain and Governor Palin in particular, on camera!
Stunned.
Bond
October 31, 2008 - 09:56 ET by BlondeIt just goes to prove the old adage that truth is stranger than fiction.
These oh-so-tolerant liberal elites on full display for all the world to see.....kind of funny, actually.
In his own words (19 seconds): This man is qualified to be VP?
Blonde
October 31, 2008 - 10:03 ET by BondPlainBondNailed it, Blonde. Stranger than fiction to be sure. On camera yet! Those faces coupled with the venomous hate from each mouth will live forever in posterity. Something to show their children and grandchildren and not be proud of at all.

So true, Chris
October 31, 2008 - 10:35 ET by BlondeI particularly liked the one who sneered that she'd have "former friends" if they were for McCain/Palin.
How sick is that?
One of my very best friends in this world (sadly she died in July) was an avowed socialist, which was really pretty funny, as she barely worked a day in her life and spent her husband's money like it was going out of style. We used to have some pretty crazy political discussions. I still miss her.
In his own words (19 seconds): This man is qualified to be VP?
many of my friends are
October 31, 2008 - 13:27 ET by dark_dsmany of my friends are leftists ....i have always believed if I only hung out with those who think exactly like I do then I would be a very lonely person
I tend not to get too involved in political discussions with many of them because they have no openess in them... I used to talk politics with them but it was very apparent that they wouldnt listen to opposing points of view ... which to me I find odd becase they are artists and musicians .. which should make one more open ....
sorry if there is mispelled words in this post .. i was trying so hard not to violate any PC protocol that I may have missed a bunch typos
sshhhh, dark
October 31, 2008 - 14:12 ET by BlondeIt's a secret between us conserves....we don't mark down for spelling and/or grammar errors amongst ourselves!
No worries.

Chris, They run in circles
October 31, 2008 - 10:38 ET by Hunter12Chris, They run in circles of similar beliefs. Most of them haven't had a new thought since JFK. If asked, the lady would have told you she is a model of tolerance.

Blonde and Hunter,
October 31, 2008 - 14:12 ET by Chris NormanI just find it bemusing that such closed-minded and stereotyping people can look at themselves as sophisticated thinkers. They're as small-minded and as mean-spirited as any small town biddy that they sneer at and mock.
McNotObama '08
That was pretty funny
October 31, 2008 - 10:14 ET by balboaThat was pretty funny stuff! But before you get on that high horse, I'm sure if we went onto a military base or somewhere in the heart of Texas with an Obama / Biden T-shirt, you'd get the same kinds of responses. People are very fierce about their political beliefs right now.
Also, someone help me out. Wasn't the woman who said the comment about McCain supporters not being her friend comedian Judy Gold? Sure looked like her.
Every single military
October 31, 2008 - 10:26 ET by HelenSEvery single military person I have ever been around has been a model of respect and politeness.
I'm just sayin'.
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." - Paul (Rom. 13:1)
Of course, conservative do
October 31, 2008 - 10:29 ET by SmartypantsOf course, conservative do not hold themselves up to be paragons of openmindedness and tolerance, do they?
Libs are always ripping on conservatives for hypocritical behavior if the conservatives do not live up to a phony pseudo-religious moral code, yet libs walk around living in a world of contradiction. They preach tolerance, but display little of it. They call themselves "progressives" but are regressive in most of their ideas and beliefs. They believe they are intellectuals, yet they display remarkably little logic and reason, and are driven more by emotional arguments than anything else.
I guess certain liberals
October 31, 2008 - 10:34 ET by balboaI guess certain liberals have tolerance for everyone but conservatives.
That's funny, though, because I raise your point in regards to why a Republican politician's party is always mentioned in a story about wrong-doing, or why people focused on the pregnant Bristol Palin: because Republicans hold themselves up to be paragons of virtue, family values, etc.
Which always reminds me of
October 31, 2008 - 10:45 ET by mulerider24Which always reminds me of this quote:
We call it "hypocrisy" when a conservative authority figure falls shorts of his professed principles. Don't we need a word to describe an advocate of permissive principles living up to them too enthusiastically?
Why aim for the uprights when you can just move the goalposts?
I thought the whole Bristol
October 31, 2008 - 10:52 ET by balboaI thought the whole Bristol Palin "thing" was an excellent example of the right moving the goalposts.
OF COURSE you did, balboa
October 31, 2008 - 11:00 ET by BlondeBut it was just fine for the media to go after her....and a made up story that she was Trig's mum, huh?
You are seriously running low on snark.
In his own words (19 seconds): This man is qualified to be VP?
Nah, I don't think it was
October 31, 2008 - 11:10 ET by balboaNah, I don't think it was "just fine." Although I didn't think too many outlets put a lot of stock in the "Trig's mum" story.
I think the Bristol issue
October 31, 2008 - 11:42 ET by mulerider24I think the Bristol issue is a perfect example. She is called a hypocrit because she engaged in pre-marital sex. What is the secular progressive called under the same scenario? What is the standard by which the agnostic is judged? There is no cement at the base of those goalposts since morals are constructed on an as-neeeded basis.
I think the difference lies in how one reacts once a mistake is made. The Palins keep the baby; the progressive would abort.
Exactly. Since your VP
October 31, 2008 - 11:44 ET by balboaExactly. Since your VP candidate has a pregnant teen, the focus is on keeping it, not on the idea of a pregnant teen. Whereas, as BOR demonstrated, if it's a non-Republican, then the parents are idiots, it's a ridiculous situation, etc.
Although I disagree where
October 31, 2008 - 13:02 ET by mulerider24Although I disagree where the focus is (your's vs the media's) at least we're getting somewhere. So by your account:
Hypocrisy is to conservatives as idiocy is to liberals/progressives. Am I fair with that assessment? So by your account conservatives are smart enough to know better but liberals are too dumb to understand. I'm o.k. with that, but the group of "intellectuals" I run with may disagree.
Let's say a guy swerves
October 31, 2008 - 13:21 ET by mulerider24Let's say a guy swerves into your lane and nearly runs you off the road
without so much as a courtesy hand gesture to say he was sorry. He just
travels on his way and smugly laughs it off. Some would simply call him
a prick under their breathe and honk the horn. Others might take down
his license plate, unearth his residence through a public data search,
and then anonymously call him from a pay phone threatening putrefaction
of his genitals the next time he dared leave an emergency key
underneath his back patio's door mat. Err... for example.
But what if there was a Jesus fish attached to this rude driver's
bumper? What would be your reaction then? Would little sarcastic
remarks like "Do unto others, you ass clown!" or "I hope you turn the
other cheek when I ram my car up your tailpipe!" immediately spring
into your head? Under this scenario, he his no longer just a prick
driver, he is NOW a Christian hypocritical prick driver. And we know Christians are not supposed to drive that way because Jesus said to only change lanes if
more than 5 car lengths separate you from the next car.
The Jesus fish driver is measured by a standard, a template, by which
to judge his actions. However, without the Jesus fish he is simply
another bad driver grouped into the ambiguous masses. He has no higher
standard to be judged against, thus you can only measure him versus
your own driving etiquette. That system holds a much greater degree of
subjective variance. The Christian knowingly separates himself from the
herd, therefore making himself a visible target for hypocrisy hunters.
The non-believer holds no such burden.
Moral of the story? Don’t put a plastic fish on the back of your car since it depreciates the value at trade-in.
...and a lot of them have
October 31, 2008 - 10:36 ET by Chris Norman...and a lot of them have nothing but contempt and disdain for the poor and "downtrodden" they champion publicly.

Actually, balboa, last week
October 31, 2008 - 10:39 ET by mulerider24Actually, balboa, last week we had a few Obama supporters standing on the corner in downtown Fort Worth during the high traffic lunch hour. I would consider this area a fairly good representation of the deep south reciprocal of this Manhattan study. Granted, I only watched this group for about 45 minutes from the window of Billy Miner's, but the word that comes to mind is "indifference." If anything there were pleasant smiles and quirky looks but nothing approaching disgust.
If Mr Geist were to walk
October 31, 2008 - 10:33 ET by lnthompIf Mr Geist were to walk through certain neighborhoods in Portland, Oregon in a McCain/Palin shirt, the residents of the expensive house might very well spit on him or worse. I live south of Portland, and I have a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on my car, but at night I leave it hidden in my garage just in case, and I try to avoid driving inside Portland as much as possible.

October 31, 2008 - 14:11 ET by marpelI lived in Greenwich Village in the 80's. This behavior didn't suprise me at all. I never disclosed my political persuasion just to avoid being mugged, spit on or screamed at. Liberals are such nice people....NOT.
Willie Geist
October 31, 2008 - 14:47 ET by bigtimerThis is hysterically funny...it proves the point of the leftist above it all leftists who say after an election that they lose...how can this be...I do not know one single person who would or did vote for said candidate...especially when you hear this from the msm critters, this is rich...
Thanks for the afternoon laughs Mark, it was funny..thanks Willie Geist too...good job!
