Decimate: 1. to destroy a great number or proportion of: the population was decimated by a plague. 2. to select by lot and kill every tenth person of.
Is that the definition of the post-partisan politics Barack Obama claims to be preaching? You know, the kind where there's no blue-state America or red-state America: just the United States of America? Maybe Chevy Chase didn't get the email. Appearing on Morning Joe today, Chase expressed his disappointment that Tina Fey didn't go after Sarah Palin harder in her SNL impersonation. Chase wanted to see Fey "decimate" the Republican VP candidate.
Chase was appearing to tout a charity auction he and wife Jayni are conducting to fund environmental education in the schools. See Bonus Coverage for a disturbing factoid Jayni let slip. Chase's call for blood came in response to Willie Geist's very first question.
View video here.
WILLIE GEIST: You were there, Saturday night, your old stomping ground. What did you make of Tina Fey?
CHEVY CHASE: Well, I thought, I mean, it's extraordinary how well she played her and how much she looked like her. I'd just like her to be—personally I felt we didn't need the Hillary stuff. I'd like her to go even harder. I want her to decimate this woman. This is a, this woman is, I mean I can't believe isn't more about her. All the media have and the press have been going "oh, she's a wonderful, oh God, her speech was great." Just unbelievable to me that this woman is running for vice-president.
The media have been saying "she's wonderful" and acclaiming her speech? Has Chevy been on extended vacation?
Chase's nastiness comes as no surprise. This is the man who at a People for the American Way benefit at the Kennedy Center publicly called President George W. Bush a "dumb f---." But I know what you're wondering: Chevy's on record, but what is Jayni Chase's opinion? Let the word go out: Jayni Chase is no Palin fan.
JAYNI CHASE: Well, as a woman, I've been politically active all my life, and she's not speaking for me.
BONUS COVERAGE: Environmentalists In Virtually Every Classroom
In the course of describing her environmentalist work and the charity auction she and her husband are conducting, Jayni Chase let this nugget slip.
JAYNI CHASE: I started the Center, but right at the moment, what I'm doing is taking my green-schooling work to Earth Day Network. And Earth-Day Network is virtually in every classroom across the country. And that's what I'm--I just, getting into schools and not just putting solar panels on and then going home but trying to do five model schools, soup to nuts, and the money we're raising, that's what it's going to go to.
So, people with the politics of Chevy and Jayni Chase have succeeded in getting into "virtually every classroom across the country." More evidence that environmentalism is thin cover for the left-wing agenda at large.

Two Observations
September 15, 2008 - 09:07 ET by Dr_Liberty1) Fey better be voting for McCain so she can keep her character going and maintain her place on SNL.
2) I didn't know SNL was still on. I prefer SNF and would love it is this guy (a real American) told this guy to stuff it.

Why do they even interview these people?
September 15, 2008 - 09:02 ET by Dr_LibertyFirst, I thought Chevy Chase was dead, so I guess it is good news that he is still alive.
Second, why do news outlets feel that it is important to interview celebrities about this stuff? (Yeah, I know that Fox recently interviewed Chuck Norris alongside Ariana Huffington, but if you don't interview Chuck when he wants to be interviewed you will get a roundhouse to the cheek.)

September 16, 2008 - 01:32 ET by DoktorFrankenIf you ever watched the movie ''Zoom'' you would swear that the bloated, pasty-faced clown was Chevy who died and came back as a zombie. If I were Chevy (just thinking and typing that gave me a chill like someone just walked on my soul with baseball cleats), I would have committed suicide (I am not kidding) after doing that film.
I have never liked his humor - or lack of it. As far as I'm concerned he got stuck mentally as an eight year-old, comedically, and was never as good as his ''peers'' on SNL. His ill-fated talk show is a testament to his lack of talent. That people in Hollywood or the ''entertainment'' industry give this jerk any work or money is a testament to their collective stupidity.
But I digress. Who cares what this non-human thinks about anything, much less about a person like Governor Palin?

Most of the super instantly wealthy in Hollywood gravitate to the left becasue they see the Government taking care of everyone as a way for them to avoid any personal responsibility for charity. How many of those folks getting $ millions for their appearances and roles in shows actually donate anything even remotely like 10% of their income to any charity at all? Sure, some of them set up 'foundations' as tax shelters and as another way they can be paid by something, but most just want government to take care of it and asuage their guilty conciences.

Chase an Heir
September 15, 2008 - 10:59 ET by Secret ConservativeChevy Chase wasn't even one of the "super instantly wealthy" Hollywierd celebrities - he was ALWAYS super-rich as the heir to the Chase plumbing supplies fortune. This guy has never had to work a day in his life, which is probably why he is SUCH a super-lefty limousine liberal. He probably feels "guilty" for being so "fortunate." So he thinks that the answer is to take money away from hard working Americans and give it to poor people and actors who can't get jobs.

September 15, 2008 - 09:17 ET by motherbeltWhen do you suppose they'll start seeking out John McCain and Sarah Palin...or even Barack Obama, to critique movies, comedy shows and night-club acts?

September 15, 2008 - 09:36 ET by Tom PaineWhen John McCain was on SNL a few years ago he did something along those lines. He said that since Barbara Streisand was always giving her political opinions he was going to sing, and then proceeded to go into a nightclub act.

September 15, 2008 - 09:21 ET by Calypso JonesI mean, perhaps they approve of the green movement and earth day and anti war....but they also say they support the troops. But does this 'soup to nuts' program support American foundational truths or does it do the opposite? Maybe liberal parents ought to be concerned too since they don't know for sure what this 'soup to nuts' program entails.
Chevy Chase - Political Scholar
September 15, 2008 - 11:26 ET by Tom PaineAnother scholar heard from. How is the opinion of a has-been comedian who hasn’t been funny since 1978 possibly relevant? I was curious to find out Chevy’s qualifications to lectures the rest of us so I pulled this from his biography on Wikipedia, a website with a well documented liberal slant:
"Chase was expelled from private schools like New York City's Dalton School and Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He did well at the Stockbridge School in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and attended Riverdale Country School in The Bronx. He was valedictorian of his senior class and entered Haverford College, but was expelled (or 'separated') from it after one semester. He then transferred to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he studied a pre-med curriculum, dated actress Blythe Danner for several years, and graduated in 1967 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. Chase did not enter medical school, which meant he would be subject to the military draft only months before the Tet Offensive, at a time when public support was dwindling for the escalating ground war in which U.S. troops were involved. Chase was not drafted; when Chase appeared in January 1989 as the first guest of the just-launched late-night Pat Sajak Show, he revealed why: he had convinced his draft board he deserved a 4-F classification by "falsely claiming, among other things, that he had homosexual tendencies."
So there you have it. Another Hollywood blowhard who doesn’t have one tenth the class or accomplishments of Sarah Palin who presumes to sit in judgment of her. I’d say that I wish his career would be decimated but that ship sailed years ago.

September 15, 2008 - 09:43 ET by KC MulvilleYou have every right to say that you won't vote for someone, and you don't owe anyone an explanation for your own vote. However, once you enter a public forum and insist that others shouldn't vote for someone, you owe the public an explanation.
Chevy Chase claims that the media isn't slamming Palin. (Reality, Chevy ... Chevy, meet Reality.) But if you're going to make those accusations, the journalist should have stopped and challenged the comedian to give details. At NewsBusters, the staff offers evidence when they accuse the media of liberal bias. Liberal celebrities toss off these accusations, but the media never challenges them on it.
That's the bias. They get away with insults and never get challenged. So, frankly, these liberal accuations aren't worth the paper they're not written on.

September 15, 2008 - 10:36 ET by Hero SquadWhen you play a character, an acto has to have some level of empathy and an appreciation of who that person is in order to pull off the impression with any success. You don't have to agree with the character, but you do have to understand where he or she is coming from.
Dana Carvey did it with Bush 41, Phil Hartman with Clinton, Will Ferrell as Bush 43, and Darrell Hammond with everyone he's portrayed. Even Chevy Chase as Ford had an empathy toward the president.
When it's mean spirited it rings false and if falls flat. That was what happened with Will Forte attempting to handle the post-Ferrell Bush, and despite nailing the appearance, his impressions were woefully underwhelming, and he has now lost that gig.
Which is fine; he's better at "McGruber" anyway.
I thought Fey handled that very well. I mean, she was a lock to return to SNL and take on that role, wasn't she?
Overall, it was a somewhat weak episode. Michael Phelps was your typical athlete turned host, which is to say he looked very uncomfortable and it was a little bit painful to watch.
"Weekend Update" was skewed heavily against "McCain/Palin" - guess we'll see if that continues during episode 2.

Has-been Chase
September 15, 2008 - 14:34 ET by ToddonCapeCodNice how the clip goes three-quarters through..... Lord knows how long in the interview it actually was, before Chevy even acknowledges and introduces his wife! Or, was that his attempt at being funny?
Shows what a Hollywood ego does for you.
And is that picture supposed to be Chevy doing the Church Lady?
Sorry, Chevy, that's Dana Carvey's character
Look at Chase's career on imdb.com sometime.
Man, has it taken a massive downturn!
Timothy Leary Lives! Live!
September 15, 2008 - 14:38 ET by cerebralcaveatsAw, really, why are they dusting off the moth balls on this brain dead Timothy Leary protege? I liked remebering him as clever and thought provoking, not just uttering the mantra of the Dems. This is probably the most he's thought in many a vicodan moment. Its lovely he did establish some type of philanthropic endeavor. How really sad how deeply ingrained Liberalism marginalizes their world view. Almost Manchurian Candidatish.
10 percent Chevy Chase
September 15, 2008 - 15:58 ET by Lame CherryChevy Chase hastes religious people with a phobia. I will call to attention his Law and Order appearance ranting as a character who was Mel Gibson with the infamous "sugar t*ts" line thrown in.
Chevy Chase is a multi millionaire, he has a family, has had more debaucherous times than Caligula and still the man is so insecure that he "needs" to a phobia to have a "daddy" in the White House to make him feel secure in Barack Obama.
I pity Mr. Chase in being in the 60 year category and he is so terrified of a strong woman, so phobic about not being man enough to not need a politician in a seat so that he can delude himself into thinking he is then successful to and so void of God's simple caring about others that he blubbers on like Tina Fey "doing all they can to Gerald Ford smear" a good person.
Sarah Palin is a good person. I will repeat that, Sarah Palin is a good person. She has never once in public stated anything like her attackers have even after weeks of this onslaught.
God bless Chevy Chase to find the Truth as he is an utter failure as a human. In His Name. Amen
Chevy Chase the 10 percent human.

Here's what I see
September 15, 2008 - 19:39 ET by kenman923McCain Palin win the election. Chevy Chase moves to Europe with Whoopi Goldberg in tow. Chevy marries Whoopi and they live happily ever after outside the U.S.
Chase dreams
September 15, 2008 - 19:44 ET by KansasgirlHow bad is this going for the libs? The people they are throwing out there to bash Governor Palin is getting pitiful. This is starting to get embaressing. Yuk Yuk!
Fell one too many times
September 15, 2008 - 19:58 ET by BobAnthonyMr. Chase?! AND SINCE WHEN HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING RELEVANT, YA DOPE!
You just got called a pinhead by Bill O'Reilly. HOW DO YA LIKE THEM APPLES?!
The only explanation for
September 15, 2008 - 20:50 ET by fitzfongThe only explanation for NBC's continued over-promotion of serial no talents Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon is that Fey and Fallon have some incriminating pictures of some high-level GE Suit. The next time either of them say or do anything funny will be the first time.
As for the washed-up Chevy Chase...who hasn't been remotely relevant for more than 30 years...his "celebrity" roast told the whole story. Not one of his contemporaries bothered to show up (kind of like the audience for his talk show). Then when he made a sarcastic crack about how he was in a ballroom with a bunch of nobodies, one of the comedians piped in with "well, at least we're nobodies at the beginning of our careers". Chevy Chase is just a sad, bitter, drug addled has-been. Good riddance, junkie.

Let me try! Let me try!
September 16, 2008 - 06:03 ET by AmericanEnergistI will now use 'decimate' in a sentence.
Chase continues to further decimate his (non-)career with his unhinged, and frankly stupid remarks.
I kinda feel for Chevy, much like you feel for anyone else losing their mind. Only this time, it's in the public eye - even if it is on MSNBC.

All Washed Up
September 16, 2008 - 11:25 ET by Bighead227and nowhere to go. He is an embarrassing shell of his borderline funny self. He can't even play himself anymore. Sadly for us, they still march him out in front of the camera.
