If only the United States were more like Europe, Joy Behar laments. Recapping the previous night’s debate on the October 9 edition of "The View," the panel discussed John McCain’s healthcare plan. In the midst of the conversation Joy Behar wondered why the United States can not "solve" health care like quasi-socialist governments in Europe.
"What they haven’t discussed in any of these debates is how other countries have solved this. France has solved it, Denmark has solved it, England has solved it. Why can’t we solve it? [applause] It’s ridiculous."
But have the mentioned countries really "solved" their health care issues? Take for example Britain, which Joy refers to as "England." "The Daily Telegraph" reported in September that Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) is in such crisis that some doctors are "calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or lead unhealthy lives."
The "Telegraph" continued that "smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone." In what may also alarm Joy Behar, who considers abortion opponents "against women," the "Telegraph" reports "fertility treatment and ‘social’ abortions are also on the list of procedures that many doctors say should not be funded by the state."
The British seemed to have not solved issues with dental care. In October 2007, CNN, certainly not a conservative news outlet, reported "some English people have resorted to pulling out their teeth because they cannot find– or cannot afford– a dentist, a major study has revealed."
No one on the panel, not even Elisabeth Hasselbeck, bothered to challenge Joy Behar’s assertions.

October 8, 2008 - 13:42 ET by GothampcJoy should be begging Barbara Walters to bring back Rosie so that Joy isn't the most stupid person on the program.
With the Democrats love of regulations, national healthcare will bring huge regulation. You can bet that government will determine "proper procedures" for every single surgery. For example, if a woman finds a lump in her breast, government's answer will be "mastectomy is the only answer to completely get rid of the problem cheaply and effectively."
It's scary how the Democrats would mess up healthcare.

SOCIALIZED MEDICINE...
October 8, 2008 - 13:54 ET by danybhoyYeah, the Brits the French,& the Danes all have the fancy "socialized health care" systems. But I have noticed that many of those with the means to do so, will flee & come to America for their major health care issues. I'm in Minnesota, I cannot tell you how many foriegners who are being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester or at the Univ. of Minnesotain Minneapolis. I'm guessing that the same could be said of places like John's Hopkins, UCLA med center, or the Cleveland Clinic, because our hospitals are the best in the world.
They come here because we have the best & they could'nt sit on a waiting list forever, that's the dirty little secret about socialized medicine. Wating lists to get anything. Well none for me, thank you.

STRATMAN...
October 9, 2008 - 08:25 ET by danybhoyThat sounds like Rochester, MN. I'm not sure Mayo is building the hotel facilities there, but there are several upscale hotels in town. More then you would think in a city the size of Rochester, & the Muslims are more then wlecome there. King Hussein of Jordan was a regular at Mayo, & was well respected in Rochester. More then a few wealthy Muslims/arabs go in for medical treatment.
BTW, stratman, I hav'nt BSed with you here in a while, I did enjoy my 2 shows this summer involving Fender's. Rush in St.Paul& Maiden in Chicago were excelent gigs. Lifeson used more Gibson LesPauls then I have seen him use in a long time. Maiden was almost all Fender Strats. Seeing them from the barrier was a treat, elite musicians are fun to watch up close, they make it look waay too easy.

October 10, 2008 - 03:15 ET by stratmanYep. Concierge service is where it's at for these big name tertiary care centers. Catering to the wealthy, particularly the uber-wealthy Middle Easterners, makes a big pot of cash for the hospitals. Entire floors will be taken over by the patient and their entourage.
Good to hear you saw some primo shows. I heard nothing but good about the Rush shows from friends that went.
Being up close is very nice. In my younger days I would camp out overnight at Severance Hall in Cleveland to buy close-up Pavillion tickets for Blossom Music Center, a kind of Hollywood Bowl type place. Had a few 1st-10th row seats over the years, and plenty of not so close seats. Not too good if you were right in front of the PA stacks on the wings - freakin' massive wall of speakers stacked floor to ceiling! (ringing ears for a while afterwards)
Last live music I've seen was Poco at a small venue. Sat right in front of bassman Jack Sundrud, but Rusty Young was about 6-8 feet away. Young was amazing. Even Paul Cotton sounded good. Wished Richie Furray was with them (no offense, Jack). While I'm at it, I'd pay cash money to see Jimmy Messina with Poco again!! That boy can play some gee-tar.

October 8, 2008 - 19:22 ET by TheBigBAll those good Canadian folks who go to hospitals in Minot or Grand Forks, ND for their healthcare. Better yet, my personal favorite: My dad got his hip replaced in Bismarck, ND. One patient he did rehab with was from Canada, and was told he would have to wait 12-15 months for his hip replacement. Given that his hip was bone on bone, he was more than willing to pay cash in the US to have it done. He went under the knife 6 1/2 weeks from the time of his first phone call.

October 8, 2008 - 22:38 ET by stratmanNot only does Socialist medicine rob all incentive out of working hard as a physician, the Canadian system also controls the number of elective procedures that can be done on a daily/weekly basis.
Canadian physicians would work harder, do more surgeries, IF they weren't hobbled by their government.

solved health care?
October 8, 2008 - 14:10 ET by mbuel1) A report just recently came out of the UK that they are no longer supplying insulin to welfcare recipients that are over 70.
2) A report from last year from France was even worse than that. They no longer perform heart surgery on patients older than 65.
->Liberals love to be cynical of the free market health system saying that without further regulation or a continuation of the regulation that we currently have the free market insurance companies will look for whatever way possible to not cover certain individuals. This is FAR worse under Welfcare.
3) The Tax burden to pay for all this is:
A) un-necessary. The Laffer curve shows that increasing taxes equals decreasing size of government. What this means is that there is an optimum level of government, and most world governments are currently exceeding that (including our own.)
B) Would force all the middle class people that Snake Oil Obama claims to want to help.
And when you throw the "Physician Assisted Suicide" it gets even worse. In Oregon the recipients of Welfcare are not being properly treated for terminal cancer and the State Government is telling the doctors to prescribe the death pill.

October 8, 2008 - 14:19 ET by Cool ArrowI've been expecting this to happen in the US for some time. It can only be accelerated when we go socialized, with a weak economy, aging population, retiring baby boomers, and high alien population.
The generation supporting the baby boom retirees will have seen our generation depend on the government to care for our parents, and it will take the efforts of two workers to support one retiree.
Pragmatic decisions, based on ingrained situational ethics, will be made.

Some info
October 8, 2008 - 15:15 ET by UnsaneDoctors in France get paid 1/3 of what U.S. doctors do. This according to a Foreign Policy article of little more than a year ago, which also noted that if France even tried to pay their doctors as we do, France's health care system would be unaffordable.
That same article noted the following: health care is an issue everywhere. No one has solved anything on that front.
Not to mention the fact that their medical innovation seems to be lacking. Sure, France's system uses 11% of GDP compared to the U.S.'s 15%, but keep in mind how much research and development, innovation and invention is done in the United States compared to other countries in the world who have completely given up on such ventures in a bid to coddle and baby their populations. For instance, Happyland (Canada) has free health care but hasn't done a damn thing of relevance in the medical world for decades. They live parasitically off of the advances made by others. M.D. Anderson, a hospital in Houston, a city with a massive medical center, has a research budget larger than all of Happyland.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

October 8, 2008 - 14:25 ET by DarkCurrentJapan also has a semi-European-style socialist healthcare system.
When I lived there I had to visit the dentist at least 4 times just to get all my teeth cleaned once. They'd clean half a jaw, charge me the standard rate of 500 yen, then have me come back for another appointment for another half-jaw. This was the only way the dentist could apparently make a profit (govt paid per visit). Sure it was cheaper in simple cash terms than paying out of pocket in the US, but it cost a lot of time (= missed opportunity costs). Furthermore the job was much lower quality than I've had in the US.
Then take a look at the quality and technological standards of the hostpitals. My first child was born in Tokyo under the socialist medical system in the early '90s. The general condition of the hostpital looked like something from before my time in the US. My mother (an RN specializing in child birth) came over at the time and couldn't believe how backward it was. Japan in the '90s was not a technologically backward place in general, but the healthcare facilities sure were.
Second child was born in the US just 4 years later. The hostpital there (Seattle) looked like something from science fiction by comparison.
In China now I have private health insurance and use 'foreign' clinics based within state-run hostpitals. The difference between things inside the clinic and outside in the surrounding local hostpital are night and day.
I wish these Behar types would really try experiencing the rest of the world in personal terms before they preach to us about how great things are 'over there'

Joy Behar is a moron
October 8, 2008 - 14:33 ET by Darwin AkbarThe UK has, of course, "solved" the problem through its The Final Solution to the Healthcare Problem, i.e., killing the old and infirm. Moreover, the HNS was also going to change the regulations to provide that unless one specifically opted out, the NHS could seize the corpse and mine it for transplant organs. All they need now is to place Drs. Mengele and Frankenstein in charge.
For braindead Joy
October 8, 2008 - 14:33 ET by UnsaneReally, Joy? The July/August (IIRC) 2007 edition of Foreign Policy contradicts you. In Britain, many people (40%, again IIRC) have private health insurance because the NHS is so crappy. The Netherlands likewise allows for private health insurance. Sure, France has a cheaper health care system, but it still has done nothing to advance medicine worldwide (the last time the French got a medical Nobel was 1980, according to my latest World Almanac) and the only reason it is so cheap is because the labor - the doctors - is paid so poorly: they only make 1/3 of what U.S. doctors do; couple that with abhorrent French rates of taxation, and they are barely making a living.
And Denmark? There's a Going Nowhere country if ever their was one. A glowing, obsequious Foreign Affairs article on how great Denmark is was full of holes and problems if one cared to look hard enough at it.
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.
