Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) earned the scorn of "The Daily Show" on August 7. Show reporter Jason Jones mocked the senator's opposition to a wind farm off Nantucket Sound.

With typical "Daily Show" sarcasm and melodrama Jones remarked:

"It looked bad for the native population, until one man stood up ... Yes. Ted Kennedy – noted man from Nantucket and co-sponsor of dozens of renewable energy bills – took a stand—against the wind farms."

Video can be found at the end of the post.

Jones interviewed "wind-hugger" Barbara Hill, executive director of Clean Power Now who suggested that the Kennedy's oppose the wind farm because of its proximity to the Kennedy compound.

"So you're suggesting the Kennedy's don't want this because it will ruin their view?" Jones asked.

Earlier in the segment, Jones interviewed Audra Parker of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound. Parker showed Jones a visual simulation of what the beachfront would look like if the wind farm is built.

As the picture flashed on the screen, Jones responded: "Oh dear God. Look at that. Wait, I'm sorry. Where are the turbines?"

"On the horizon," Parker replied. "They're quite visible."

Nimby

An article about this came out about this time ago, but wasn't covered much if at all by the MSM. This is sooo typical. They talk the talk, but they won't walk the walk. Ultimately, they could paint those wind farms the color of the ocean (gray) and you would either not notice them or barely see them. Have you ever seen the color of Navy ships, why do you think they do that. So they are hard to see. Of course the dims are all for energy conservation due to theory of GW, if it costs the masses money, but if it affects them, sorry. Oh, by the way, like the bridge in Minnesota, it's all George Bushes' fault. The last thing a citizen wants to here is; "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."  Ronald Reagan.

Navy ships are actually

Navy ships are actually pretty easy to see from a distance (I know... I used to have to look for them).  What would work is something the Army discovered decades ago.  The human eye has a very tough time distinguishing bright lights over a distance.  They parked a tank on a hilltop, where it was plainly visible from all distances.  Then they placed a couple of high-intensity lights, one about 1/3rd the way down the tank's length and one 2/3rds of the way, and turned them on.  The effect from even less than a mile away was stunning... the tank just disappeared.  The human eye can't compensate for the contrast between the bright lights and daylight, so it pretty much doesn't see past the bright lights.  They also learned that you could dim the lights as sun light diminshed, and keep the tank hidden until dark.

The problem was how do you always keep the lights facing your enemy and generate enough power to keep them all going.  Niether of these would be an issue for a windfarm.

Bruzilla, you are right...

...about the lights making objects "disappear."  This concept was pioneered by a British magician named Maskelyne during WWII in North Africa.  One example: He mounted spinning lights combined with spinning mirrors onto a standard searchlight that was normally used with anti-aircraft guns.  When this contraption was pointed toward the sky at night during an air raid, German pilots were immediately sickened and disoriented.  Hun aircraft were falling from the sky like dead flies.  All this was in a fairly old book called "War Magician."  Absolutely fascinating reading...if one is interested in such things.

Sunrise at sea; a breeze across the deck, salty spray tickles the face, the aroma of fresh coffee, stack gas, and haze-gray paint is in the air.  Another Navy day aboard ship as a Navy Chief...the perfect life!

m4, This is one of the

m4,

This is one of the reasons I check in at NB each day.

"Delicious" facts (h/t Noel, of course).

I'd heard about lights making things disappear (I believe they use this technology on the new stealth drone aircraft as well).  But your "Huns falling from the sky like dead flies" made my day.

Thanks for the info...and your post.

he law of unintended consequences

it's been found a few times where mandatory running lights causes this effect, making cars (and often motorcyclists) "invisible" when cresting a hill at the right time of day.

But that doesn't stop laws mandating my bike's headlights are on all the time for "safety" reasons, does it?:P

Their View

A PROUD AMERICAN

Kerry and Kennedy their view is completely obscured on every important American issue.  One blinded by a foriegn bottle of Ketchup the other by a Bottle of booz.  Massatwoshits, get rid of your biggest baggage, your people and the people of America deserve better.

How does one OPPOSE wind energy anyway?  yet this fool jumps up and down like he owns the Senate.   I sincerely regret the creation of the ENTIRE Kennedy family.  Utter disgraces

Profound Irony

It's ironic that the only Kennedy child of Rose and Joe that rebelled against the family blueprint, Rosemary, was lobotomized so she would fit in better with the clan.  Burn in hell, Joe.

Teddy is a neverwas hasbeen who deserves derision.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

Windbag Wind Farm

Of course Teddy's against the wind farms off Nantucket.  He is for protecting his monopoly - he's the biggest wind farm on Nantucket.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

You're right. Like the BJ

You're right. Like the BJ Bob segment (which really caught my attention due to where I live) this was an excellent segment. Once again, I learned something factual from the "non-serious" Daily Show I had NOT learned in the "mainstream" media. What, you ask, was that?

Well, it's just how petty this whole thing is because the windmills are so far away. When I first heard about an ocean view being obstructed, I imagined they'd be pretty close to shore, but from the Daily Show's animation, at least, far from it. These things will look like a few little tiny blips on the far horizon, at most, to these Prius-driving snobs! In fact, if anything, these things -- if ever built -- will no-doubt count as a status symbol for some of these people as much as a power source!

Love Jason Jones. He does great stuff. I loved when he was yelling at the kids to get out of the water.

NIMBY Teddy

I'm glad to see The Daily Show ridicule Kennedy for obstructing the Cape Wind Project. The engineers at Cape Wind claim that once completed, the wind turbines will generate about 75% of Cape Cod's electric energy needs, and the Army Corps of Engineers okayed the plan.  Kennedy, meanwhile, has used his influence over Federal agencies to block the project.

Teddy is a fraud.

Recently on the Daily Show

I've noticed something quite refreshing as of recent on the daily show.  John is actually *gasp* taking on LIBERAL hypocrisy as well as conservative hypocrisy.  It's no secret that John Stewart is quite a lefty liberal who stands for alot of things I'm not particularly crazy about, but before the past few months, he came off as an annoying left-wing cheerleader ala Sean Hannity for the right (although I don't mind Hannity, often he has great points.)

I'm a fan of the daily show back when I 'wasn't allowed to watch' cause I was a kid, back when Kilborn did the daily.  I don't remember much political talk but I remember Craig was absolutely hilarious and had ingenius timing such as Conan O'Brien.  After John took over I watched expecting to see his comedic side at work much like Kilborn (and I like john, as a comedian.)  Sadly, over the years I saw a left-wing crazy man who seemed to shoot down any conservative idea or principle (or figure for that matter) simply for the fact that it was conservative.  Given, often he gives his reasons opposing them, and not always are they baseless and even sometimes I 110% agree.  However, as I said, as years went on, I grew tired of him.

Nowadays I am doing freelance design work to make enough money to get my own place and since I work from basically 7am-7pm (8am-6pm but its a 1 hour commute both ways) I only get free time to design at night since I do all my exercise and relaxing right after I get home, going from work to work is just too much.  Anyways, at 11pm the daily comes on and I've found myself having it on, if anything, for background noise (and I love Colbert which comes on afterward.)  Its crazy though because recently I've seen John go after liberals themselves for being crazy, hypocrites, or a combination of both.  It really made me respect him more as I now believe its possible he isn't just a cheerleader but genuinely believes in his on-air convictions and is not willing to give dems a free pass.  If you didn't get a chance to see this I suggest you check out the rerun tonight I think its like on at 8pm or so.  Its great and they totally tear up on Ted.  I was cracking up!

Longing for the Kilborn Era

. . .  back when Kilborn did the daily.  I don't remember much political talk but I remember Craig was absolutely hilarious and had ingenius timing such as Conan O'Brien.

You're right.  The Daily Show has narrowed its scope more to political humor since Jon Stewart took over, and strictly from the Left at that.   Having been a regular viewer of the Kilborn TDS, it didn't take me long to dump the Stewart TDS from my sked.  I think Craig Kilborn was funnier than O'Brien, and certainly more hip.

. . .  Sadly, over the years I saw a left-wing crazy man who seemed to shoot down any conservative idea or principle (or figure for that matter) simply for the fact that it was conservative.  Given, often he gives his reasons opposing them, and not always are they baseless and even sometimes I 110% agree.  However, as I said, as years went on, I grew tired of him.

It didn't take me long to see the writing on the wall.  I think that the worst part of the Stewart years has been his softballing of Democratic guests; they know they're safe, and they shouldn't be that comfortable.  Stewart at times seemed afraid to even raise certain obvious questions.

Maybe his stab at Kennedy/Cape Wind is indicative of a change in flavor.  I hope so.  Let's hope it builds into a trend.

When Kilborn did the show,

When Kilborn did the show, it was a much different format. It was a silly little talk show, like most others. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it. The Five Questions at the end of the interviews were usually quite funny. Kilborn got a little old, sometimes, but overall I watched it.

Of course now I love Jon Stewart's show. Pokes a lot of fun at a lot of people, and the correspondents have ALWAYS been hysterical, from Beth Littleford to Mo Rocca to Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert to the current group.

Give me Kilborn

There's no question over the writing on The Daily Show.  It's very smart, and quite funny.   But it's all from the Left.

Should Hillary Clinton win the Presidential election, can anyone imagine Jon Stewart going after her and her Administration night after night like they've gone after Bush?

Hillary Clinton and her husband bring more baggage than the cargo hold of a 747 -- plenty of joke material.  But would Stewart get nasty?  Wouldn't MoveOn.org and the Daily Kos launch ugly anti-Stewart campaigns if he did?

To me, that's the difference.  If their political humor was balanced, they'd probably double their audience.  But they are content with the one-sided laughs.

Actually I hear he's big on

Actually I hear he's big on Obama and other 'no name' dem canidates.  hes certainly no Hil fan, but you're right, he'll never say that much.  Don't want to upset your audience.

If a Dem wins, I think

If a Dem wins, I think he'll treat them just as he did Bush. The president is always a target, regardless of party. Letterman and Leno did Clinton jokes, SNL skewered Clinton, and Stewart will be no different should a Dem win the election.

Stewart is also no fan of CNN, as he skewers them a lot, especially Wolf.

Is that all ya got balboa,

Is that all ya got balboa, Clinton?? sheesh!! $-)

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

MM,  Its obvious that

MM,

Its obvious that Stewart is NO FAN of Bush and probably is much tougher on him but Bal is right, John has always gone after the people in power.  It's sort of his thing.  Nothing is ever good enough and he's going to hound on the shortcommings because that's basically what the daily is about, poking fun at the gaffes of our governmental officials.  He just happens to focus on conservatives since hes not a fan.

Wind farms have red blinking lights at night.

Put in all the wind farms as you can, maybe they will generate 1% of the power we need.

We have a small fleeting chance  to build hundreds of nuclear power plants, while oil is still available. This is the only option in a post oil world.. 7 th. century is the other.  I hope i do not see the "end of the age of oil".  We will always have oil, however it's delivery to your gas tank, will stop as quick as a lighting bolt.

This is the wish and prayers of the islamofacists.

Entitlement over infrastructure every SINGLE time.

If you want to educate

If you want to educate yourself on the wind farm here is their website:

http://www.cleanpowernow.org/

Pretty informational and even though I am a right-wing, gun lovin', gay bashin', SUV driving, racist (sarcasm off).  I actually support the idea of the windfarm.

Of course, I am a bit torn when I see pictures like the guy holding the "stop climate change" (yeah...good luck with that) sign on the website.   Maybe it is the idea that it torks off Kennedy that keeps me supporting it.

No shock to me, I mean

No shock to me, I mean Teddy has been killing things for a long time (women, scotch, bourbon, windmills, common sense)
