Live from Anchorage at 5:33 PM EDT/4:33 PM CDT/1:33 PM ADT, Kyra Phillips revealed “there were a number of things that we were sent here to investigate,” including “trooper-gate,” but before that, she stressed “here's what's interesting,” that Palin ”has gone on the record and said that she is in full support of abstinence, and that she doesn't believe in contraception on school grounds and sex education.” Phillips then highlighted:
The Alliance for Reproductive Justice...says abstinence doesn't work, we've got to have better sex education in schools and this is just one example, this just underscores -- the pregnancy of the Governor's daughter -- to why we need sex education in schools.Audio: MP3 audio clip (2:10, 600 Kb) which matches the video above rendered for me by the MRC's Michelle Humphrey.
The domain name for the Alliance for Reproductive Justice, an Anchorage-based group, makes clear its agenda: alaskaprochoice.org
Its “resources” page also shows it is first and foremost a pro-abortion organization.
Phillips had introduced the subject:
Before moving on to “trooper-gate,” Phillips threatened: “So we're investigating more, of course, about the family, and the kids.”Let's go ahead and talk about the pregnancy here of Bristol Palin. And what we've been able to find out, and certain individuals that we've been able to talk to, just to talk more about where the Governor stands, actually on sex, teenage pregnancy, sex before marriage, and issues that she has gone on the record with. Strong opinions. And what is now happening within her family.
Phillips' Monday, September 1 reporting on the pregnancy/sex education from a fairly dark daytime Alaska, followed by Bennett's reaction from the floor of the Xcel Center in St. Paul, site of the delayed Republican convention:
KYRA PHILLIPS: There were a number of things that we were sent here to investigate. I can talk about trooper-gate in just a moment. But let's go ahead and talk about the pregnancy here of Bristol Palin. And what we've been able to find out, and certain individuals that we've been able to talk to, just to talk more about where the Governor stands, actually on sex, teenage pregnancy, sex before marriage, and issues that she has gone on the record with. Strong opinions. And what is now happening within her family.
Let's go ahead and start with her daughter, 17-year-old daughter. The rumors began, and what we started asking yesterday, when we hit the ground running, and actually over the weekend, if anybody was able to confirm these rumors, that this baby, this brand-new baby that the Governor just had recently, was that of her daughter's, and not hers. And that she was trying to cover up this pregnancy. There was even a picture, Wolf, that was circulating on the Internet saying, look, “here's the Governor. She's supposed to be six months pregnant but she doesn't look like she's pregnant at all.” That got everybody talking and the rumors were just swirling. As we started to ask questions, as we started to investigate this, the next thing we knew, McCain aides were saying, we're going to have an announcement on this. We need you to stand by. And that's when we found out about the pregnancy of her teenage daughter.
Now here's what's interesting. She has gone on the record, the Governor has gone on the record and said that she is in full support of abstinence, and that she doesn't believe in contraception on school grounds and sex education. We had a chance to actually talk to someone just a short time ago that's involved with the Alliance for Reproductive Justice. And this is an organization that says abstinence doesn't work, we've got to have better sex education in schools and this is just one example, this underscores -- the pregnancy of the Governor's daughter -- to why we need sex education in schools. And went into more details on how there have been studies done, that here in the state of Alaska, there's a high number of STDs, that teenage pregnancy is a tremendous problem and no matter how much you talk to your child about not having sex before marriage, or having sex as a teenager, this is what can happen.
We've found out more about the kids, more about the family. Also, during the race for Governor, a lot came out about the kids. And that these are typical teenagers. They're not perfect. And that there have been typical teenage issues that the Governor has had to deal with, while also being in the political limelight. So we're investigating more, of course, about the family, and the kids. And it really points out, Wolf, the struggle that Governor Palin is going to have, not only as a mother, but also a political leader, if indeed she gets to the next level. She's going to see more criticism, and a lot of people being tougher on her and her family.
.....
WOLF BLITZER: Kyra, stand by. We're watching this story. I want Bill Bennett to weigh in. Bill, you heard the two stories, really, totally unrelated: A bitter divorce, a bitter custody battle involving her ex-brother-in-law and sister, and the charge being, she called this commissioner and she pressured him, in effect, to go ahead and fire the trooper. He says that publicly. The trooper was never fired. She denies there was any inappropriate political pressure from the Governor to go ahead and fire her ex-brother-in-law.BILL BENNETT: This is the kind of story that can be appropriately looked at because this is about ethics, ethics in government. Same kinds of questions people have asked about Barack Obama and Rezko, Barack Obama and Bill Ayres. These are serious questions. This is a question about Sarah Palin. I know it was vetted by the McCain campaign, I know we've all been reading about it.
But that first piece of attack of journalism, Wolf, I got to speak to. We all praised Barack Obama, myself included, for saying, do not use the case of this child to start to beat up Sarah Palin and to use this as an opportunity to make points for the Center for Reproductive Pregnancy [Alliance for Reproductive Rights]. That was really out and out outrageous. That should not happen on CNN.
BLITZER: You know it will, Bill. It will generate- Hold on, you know it will generate a discussion about-
BENNETT: On the blogs
BLITZER: Hold on. It will generate a discussion over those who say abstinence only should be taught versus formal sex education, birth control pills, and all of that. And to have a discussion about those issues is totally appropriate.
BENNETT: Totally appropriate separated from this context. That's to the point. That's what Barack Obama said. Do not drag this girl's situation into having a discussion of that.
BLITZER: But it's going to spark a discussion, a debate which has been around for a long time.
BENNETT: Fine, we'll get in it, I'll get in it. My wife will get in it. These are legitimate issues. She just violated everything -- we all praised Barack Obama.
BLITZER: But hold on. What do you think? Should abstinence be taught or should there be formal sex education taught in school?BENNETT: There should be formal sex education-
BLITZER: You're a former Secretary of Education.
BENNETT: Absolutely and I know the issues very well. What we should do is what's most effective. Abstinence education I believe, the best programs are the most effective. But these are decisions that can be made at the state level. But that bit of advocacy has no place on CNN and its respectable journalism.
....
BENNETT: And public policy. The fact that her daughter got pregnant does not refute the public policy decision and we can discuss those separately. But what Barack Obama has -- I'll invoke him again, has asked us to do is not drag that family, that daughter's situation into this public policy discussion.
BLITZER: It's fair enough. But you know that there is going to be a debate now. The whole issue of abstinence.

September 1, 2008 - 20:07 ET by dmntd1To use liberal logic, the reason abstinence education doesn't work isn't because it's wrong, or the wrong thing to teach, but because we don't fund it fully.
I hereby demand that the state and federal gubments fund abstinence education at a minimum rate of $1000 per student, approximately on par with the funding rate of other mainstays in the school system such as revisionist history, new math, socio-pathic-ology and especially arts and sports.

I watched her show and I couldn't agree with you more regarding Campbell Brown. She has been making every attempt to disparage Sarah Palin AND her family since Gov. Palin's selection was announced.
You can see the frustration on Campbell's face and in her voice when she discusses Gov. Palin "lack of foreign experience" or her daughter's pregnancy with John McCain's representatives, and they come back with the rebuttal that Sarah Palin is more experienced than Barry Obama.

That's so true. And it's also true for all of these other so-called unbiased reporters with "no dog in the fight".
Everyone has bought into the idea that McCain has no right to criticize Obama's lack of experience on the grounds that his running mate is equally inexperienced. But, for some reason, the same does not hold true for Obama. He has every right to criticize Palin's lack of experience. In a logical world, they both should cancel each other out. But in the Crazy world of the Nutjob Left, McCain is neutralized and Barrack isn't. I know this is the same old thing. It's nothing new. But it sure is tiresome.

It shows you how far the Drive-By media will go to paint John McCain and the Republican Party as racist.

There is only one candidate where people are concerned about their age, John McCain and the concern is real. There is a very real chance his VP may have to become president. With Obama there is little concern him and Biden are going to die so they are perfectly happy with thinking that Biden will tell Barry what he doesn't know.
The experience argument becomes Obama and Biden vs. Palin. NOT Obama vs. Palin.
This is why Obama can relentlessly hammer this point home.

Statistically, your argument is false. Most Americans live longer than their parents (for various reasons), McCain's mother is still alive, statistically giving him another 25 - 30 years to live. Also, most 72 year old Americans will not die in the next 4 to 8 years.

September 1, 2008 - 20:48 ET by Tom1969ca"The Alliance for Reproductive Justice ... says abstinence doesn't work." -- Kyra Phillips
"Abstinence works every time it is used." -- Rush Limbaugh
As usual, Rush is right. Bristol Palin is not pregnant because she was taught abstinence; she is pregnant because she didn't use abstinence. Presumably she was taught contraception in school; she didn't use that either. Of course, if she opted for the one form of "birth control" still available to her - in other words, if she terminated the baby's life - then, despite abortion being one of liberalism's sacrements, they would offer that up to the public as "hypocrisy" on the part of Sarah Palin as well.
So Bristol made a mistake. She should be commended for not compounding it by making another mistake...
I mean, she had sex with her boyfriend. It's not like she hung around with known terrorists, falsely accused comrades-in-arms of war crimes, or left someone to die in an overturned Oldsmobile...
(It's also not like she's the one running for elected office, but I digress...)

semi-safe sex
September 1, 2008 - 22:07 ET by NonanonAbstinence does work each time it is employed but the idea of safe sex is a misnomer. I've heard that condoms are only effective 80% of the time but that is misleading since a woman can get pregnant only a few days a month. That has to drop the rate considerably, resulting in not so safe sex. But we can't tell people that can we? There is another lie that has to be pushed on people, regardless of the harm it does emotionally or physically. I've also heard not all viruses are stopped by condoms, creating even less safety.
Imagine an Obama/Palin ticket....
September 1, 2008 - 22:07 ET by Ted ClarkeImagine an alternate scenario where a few key details are changed:
1) Gov. Palin is a far left liberal.
2) Gov. Palin is Barrack's Veep pick.
3) Gov. Palin aborts her Down's Syndrome baby.
4) Gov. Palin aborts her daughter's baby, as well.
If these were the facts, how differently would the Corrupted Leftist Media package the story? Wouldn't this be their narrative?
Sen. Barrack Obama.... "THE ONE" We Have Been Waiting For!
Gov. Sarah Palin.... "THE OTHER ONE" we have been waiting For!

Sure, they may have unscientifically tested, non-peer-reviewed promises of Heaven in Heaven. But we have something much better. We have Barrack Obama's promises of Heaven on Earth!
Chant it with me now:
OBAMA'S PROMISES OF HEAVEN ON EARTH!
OBAMA'S PROMISES OF HEAVEN ON EARTH!

September 1, 2008 - 23:44 ET by Ted ClarkeHey Bigtimer,
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear that your week has been made. And yes, you made me laugh again.
Here's a bonus observation for you, just to add a bit more to this Sarah Palin Pregnancy-Gate nonsense. I've been reading through a lot of the Lefty comments on other blogs and there seems to be a prevailing theme running through their attacks. The argument goes like this:
"Okay. We'll accept the excuse that Sarah Palin's family is off-limits and we'll agree that she did nothing wrong. But the real villain in all of this is John McCain because he didn't properly vet his running mate."
Here's my counter to that argument:
If Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy is a private issue that has no relevance to the Presidential race, than how can McCain be criticized for reaching that same conclusion? Many of his critics agree that it's irrelevant, but then they criticize him for not properly vetting Palin, meaning that he should have disqualified her on the grounds that her daughter was pregnant. They want it both ways: The pregnancy is a non-issue, but McCain making it a non-issue is an issue. Folks on the Left make no sense.
Anyway, let's see how far this nastiness takes our loveable, drooling Leftist nutjobs. I see only backlash and disappointment for them. But man, it sure is fun to watch. There may be 17 million cracks in the glass ceiling, but there are just as many cracks in the Democratic Party's sanity. Maybe Barrack is right. Maybe he is the change that we have been waiting for. If the Obamicans actually go through with it and follow their Messiah, lemming-like, over the cliff, then I will become a true believer. Because THAT is change I can believe in!
Take it easy, Bigtimer, and thanks again.
Hrm...
September 1, 2008 - 23:50 ET by Mr. BishopFor me, the only thing I wonder, is how it is that the mere fact that her daughter is pregnant is an issue. The reason I wonder this, is because if said daughter was the daughter of Obama, and said daughter decided to abort said pregnancy, and did not inform said father of the abortion of said pregnancy, the press would not report on it as it would be a violation of privacy of an underage child to receive an abortion. Any Republican who would question it, would be chastized and ultimately crucified for questioning the abortion of a pregnancy of an underage child who did not inform her parent of this.
That is what kills me... privacy is ONLY privacy for liberals, when it's a matter of doing the wrong thing -- not the right thing. Yes -- deciding to take a child to term and giving birth, when having sex, is the right thing to do -- not aborting it.

Wow... libs anti-privacy
September 1, 2008 - 23:01 ET by Mr. BishopWhat is so amazing about these left-wing nutbags here...
They comment about Palin getting her own house in order before seeking a VP nomination. I have a few questions for you libs...
How did you respond to the numerous charges of Bill Clinton's sexual harassment that eventually led to his conviction of perjury and ultimately his impeachment? The reason I ask this, is I would be willing to bet that a vast majority of you guys, would not flip that to Hillary Clinton, being required to keep her house in order, or perform her "womanly" duties, to keep Bill under control, and in her bed only.
The bottom line is -- this is Palin's daughter, not Palin herself. Do children make mistakes? Yes. Does the child's mistakes reflect on parenting? In many cases, yes. Ultimately, however, the choices that children make, are made by the children, with no regards to what the parents' say. The same thing holds true here.
Yes, I can say this with great certainty. My wife and I have been married for 9 years, and we have two children. Our daughter was born before my wife and I were married, and she (my wife) got pregnant when she was 17. Simply being 17, and pregnant, does not mean that marrying the father, is forced. My wife was not forced to marry me. We did so because it was the right thing to do, and because we were in love, and felt that we could handle marriage together.
In other words, cut out the BS -- you Libtards out there, are all for privacy of children to get abortions on demand, without the permission of their parents. However, the moment that a Republican vice-presidential candidate has an underage daughter that is pregnant, her privacy goes right out the window. Amazingly, the hypocrisy of the left, holds no bounds...
Privacy in the terms of abortions only... having the baby -- privacy goes away... Amazing.

September 1, 2008 - 23:19 ET by usinkoreaBlitzer's justification is telling:
Rev. Wright and Obama's church started generating interest on the internet and talk radio to a point at which these deans of news-worthyness felt they had to come out and ---- not cover the story ---- but come out and tell the American audience --- the story had no merit and they were going to refuse to talk about it.
John Edwards - a possible VP running mate - has an affair and gets a staffer pregnant --- and the news media --- absolutely refuses to cover it --- regardless of whatever "discussion" alternative outlets are able to generate over the story.
But, this other VP running mate's baby story --- is prime time news material.

MSM feels threatened
September 1, 2008 - 23:50 ET by nkviking75The MSM must feel very threatened by Sarah Palin to carry out these endless attacks on her. It hasn't even been one week since her name was announced. Good for Bill Bennett for calling out Kyra Phillips and CNN. And shame on Wolf Blitzer for trying to weasel out of it by changing the subject.
Someone in the MSM should explain how Bristol's choice to have sex somehow negates the truth of Sarah Palin's position on abstinence education. They can't do it, at least not honestly. But they think if they repeated incessantly at the top of their lungs, that makes it true.
How would this episode have gone down if Barack Obama's daughters were a little older and one of them got pregnant? Would there have been a similar firestorm? Of course not. There'd probably be a huge mob of media leeches waiting outside abortion clinics for ol' Barry to bring his daughter in. And the left would hail him for doing it.
If McCain/Palin is elected, we can look forward to 8 more years of this lunacy.
Kyra Phillips is famous for having her mic on and being catty while taking a bathroom break. The bathroom seems like the most appropriate place for her office.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

September 2, 2008 - 00:05 ET by BlondeThat she was the bathroom break chick. Of course, I don't watch CNN.
I suspect the Barack Hussein team realizes these attacks are not going to work, in fact, they finally got it today (smacks forehead) and Barry said "cease and desist".
I am really looking forward to Sarah Palin's performance at the convention, and on the stump. She has re-energized this race as no other candidate could have.
And I know the "conventional wisdom" is that the Hillary voters aren't going to go for her because she's a woman....but, I think they will.
My mom plays bridge with a bunch of old biddies. She played last week (before Sarah). Of the three of them (all dems), two wouldn't vote for Obama under any circumstances, and were planning on voting for McCain (I think they'll be "happy" McCain voters, now)...only one was for the Messiah.

Education
September 2, 2008 - 00:09 ET by KC MulvilleAbstinence doesn't work? Because one kid got pregnant. This, in a culture that wallows in sex every day? I have to say something obvious. I have nothing against sex education in itself, but it's not a magic solution.
If our kids are making sex decisions that no one holds them accountable for, it ain't the kids who need the damned education. Along with knowing how the body works, and the psychology of sex, we need to teach how responsibility works. Quit treating sexually active people as children.

September 2, 2008 - 00:35 ET by sarcasmoAre, for people like me, both 2 sides of the same "public schools as propaganda outlets" coin. Think about it...Both want to use the other side's tax money in an effort to indoctrinate the other side's kids. I know it's an almost irresistable temptation for both sides, but they're both wrong. The morally correct policy remains: NO "PUBLIC" (SOCIALIST) SCHOOLS. Other "solutions" are just tax funded propaganda, no matter which side momentarily "wins." Until we FINALLY let markets decide these issues again instead of politics, our country won't ever return to what impressed Alexis de Tocqueville about her citizens so long ago.

Other Solutions Exist
September 2, 2008 - 02:41 ET by PopularTechIf the money is attached to the child, it solves all the socialist problems and the market does decide. There is a serious problem with the poor not being able to afford to go to school and thus perpetual poverty. I have no problem with making access to education up to grade 12 a constitutional right. Education is the only thing that is going to save this country. The current pure socialist system is a joke and until you implement market mechanisms into it, it will continue to fail.

Pathologizing the Right
September 2, 2008 - 01:52 ET by nofateI love Bill Bennett. He is a former victim of the left wing media attack machine and knows exactly what is meant when the left pathologizes what it intends to destroy. So does Clarence Thomas. I'm afraid Sarah is next, but I think she can stand up to it. I'm re-posting a comment I made under the Zucker video post by Noel and Matt, because their angle of sex education is relevant to what is discussed in that post:
Always the director.
September 2, 2008 - 02:31 ET by nofate
No more than 3 minutes into the interview, Zucker says "If you move closer to him, then I can look at you and the camera" (paraphrasing from memory). Free advice from a pro, Noel & Matt :-) Great interview.
More on a similar subject in an interview that Neil Cavuto did with Jon Voight this afternoon on FNC. I searched around but couldn't find the video of it. Cavuto got Voight fired up about describing the process of what is essentially the "long march through the institutions" without actually using that terminology. He evidently uses that theme fairly frequently, i.e. in this Washington Times op ed, that I found in a blistering attack on Voight's views in Crooks and Liars, while searching for video of the elusive Cavuto/Voight interview. The "long march" idea, as far as I can tell was first concieved by Antonio Gramsci. I first ran across it at FrontPageMag in an online book they have up in Adobe Reader format, Radical Road Maps: Uncovering the Web of Connections Among Far Left Groups in America, by James H. Hansen. From page 54:
How prescient, considering that Mr. Hansen's book has a copyright date of 2006. And now the CAC won't let anyone look? Hmmm.
An absolutely chilling, yet enlightening article that explains the process of the long march and more, that has been occuring since the 1930's, can be found at American Thinker: Cultural Marxism. (note: emphases mine)
Our tax dollars at work. Note the prhase used above: ...Additional intellectual firepower was required: a theory to pathologize what was to be destroyed. Also note the timeing: 1950. I.E. conservatives are Nazis, fascists, racists, homophobes, misogynists; literally everything they are not. This "pathologizing the right" is explained well in Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism". The astute reader will also note that the tactics used so emotionally at Crooks and Liars, appear similar to those oulined in the writings of the anointed described in the Cultural Marxism article.
Also, remember the plan by the APA to help indoctrinate our children into the church of Anthropogenic Global Warming? It was covered by Noel here: Advancing Hysteria by Editing Skeptical Views of Global Warming. Check out the "Social and Emotional Learning" article linked above. That bit about social conservatives being crazy is only the tip of the iceberg. "Social and Emotional Learning" appears to be a whole governmental/psycological association program to get hold of young minds early, as in The Barack of Obama's nursery school program needing gazillions of federal dollars. More excerpts that preceeded the above description of insane social conservatives (note: the National Association of School Psychologists is heavily involved, surprise!):
They are making McLame look better every day. At least with Sarah on the ticket, we now have something to vote for.

Abstinence Only
September 2, 2008 - 05:57 ET by kiwikitis what we used in the '60's and in my class of 570 in high school, I'm aware of only one pregnancy. The difference is that sex was not being pushed as us 24/7 as it is today in schools, on TV, in books and in movies. Sex is NOT an absolute for teens and pre-teens unless it's sold to them as a 'must.' It is absolutely a tragedy what the secularist left has done to our children with this. The whole concept of sex within marriage only has become a joke when it's one of the most beautiful things in the human world. Sex has become totally devalued with its common appeal to all while marriage is considered old hat. We've stolen possibly the most valuable things in a human life from our children and turned it into a cheap thrill.

The "Alliance for Reproductive Rights" actually advocates abortion as one of the 'choices' for birth control. So, in their view, the murdering of a child is a way for the mother to exercize her 'reproductive right'. What they really want is for sex to be taught in public schools so as to increase their abortion services where they make their $$$.
