Matthews: Obama Speech Caused 'Thrill Going Up My Leg'

By Brad Wilmouth | February 13, 2008 - 04:37 ET

During MSNBC's live coverage of Tuesday's presidential primary elections, after the speeches of Barack Obama and John McCain had aired, Chris Matthews expressed his latest over the top admiration for Obama's speaking skills as the MSNBC anchor admitted that Obama's speech created a "thrill" in his leg: "It's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often." Minutes later, Brian Williams poked fun at Matthews' confession: "Let's talk about that feeling Chris gets up his leg when Obama talks ... That seems to be the headline of this half hour." (Transcript follows)

At about 10:13 p.m., right after McCain finished his speech, which came after Obama's speech, co-anchor Keith Olbermann remarked that, due to Obama's unusual speaking skills, it was a good idea for any other speaker to speak before the Illinois Democrat instead of after him. Matthews then expressed what he referred to as an "objective assessment" of Obama's speech:

I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often. No, seriously. It's a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country. And that is an objective assessment.

After complimenting Obama for praising McCain's heroism, Matthews delivered a pessimistic assessment of McCain's situation as well as that of the Virginia Republican party:

But I just think that McCain's problem is he's over 70, he's standing there with John Warner, who's much older than him. He's standing with Tom Davis, who's retiring. He looks like an army in retreat in Virginia. That's what it looks like tonight. The Virginia Republican party used to own that state. They could elect people that are not particularly likable. They were able to do that in the past. Now they're having a hard time even fielding a candidate against Mark Warner.

Olbermann soon brought aboard Williams, who started off making fun of Matthews (much like his colleage Joe Scarborough did Wednesday morning)

WILLIAMS: Well, let's talk about that feeling Chris gets up his leg when Obama talks, for starters.

OLBERMANN: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

WILLIAMS: That seems to be the headline of this half hour.

MATTHEWS, laughing: Let it stand, then. Don't tread on it, Brian, if it's a good line.

Below is a transcript of the relevant portions of the Tuesday February 12 coverage of the presidential primaries from MSNBC:

KEITH OLBERMANN: John McCain speaking after his three victories in the Potomac primaries tonight, from Alexandria, Virginia, to the tunes of Johnny B. Goode, instrumental only. And in a statement which I hope transcends political orientation and party affiliation and all that, I would think, Chris, as we start to analyze what we have heard here, the rule has to be, if you can, always speak before Barack Obama, not after Barack Obama.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often.

OLBERMANN: Steady.

MATTHEWS: No, seriously. It's a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country. And that is an objective assessment. John McCain is a hero. I thought it was very appropriate that Barack Obama extended that fact-

OLBERMANN: And very savvy.

MATTHEWS: -to an audience of people who were very probably liberal and probably anti-Republican. He said this is an American hero I'm running against. And then, of course, he went in to delineate his differences with him. It shows a lot of class. I think there will be class if there is such a contest come this coming summer. The former governor's going to run for that Senate seat of John Warner's, no relation, and it's going to be very tough for them.
...

OLBERMANN: Where do we start with this? Brian, we haven't spoken to you tonight. Simply on the results here, are we clearer about where each of these primaries are going, how soon we will get to the nominees in both cases?

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Well, let's talk about that feeling Chris gets up his leg when Obama talks, for starters.

OLBERMANN: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

WILLIAMS: That seems to be the headline of this half hour.

MATTHEWS (laughing): Let it stand, then. Don't tread on it, Brian, if it's a good line.

Lack of control

Matthews will be next on the David Shuster vacation. He can't control himself, and he gets so excited, he's a timebomb. MSNBC is going to have to consider a seven-second delay, just to make sure that their "talent" doesn't say anything that might offend Hillary.

After all, they say that the most dangerous animal in nature is a wounded mother, and Hillary certainly qualifies.

I will say this. however. Olbermann must see the writing on the wall. He's pulling his punches. Somebody must have called him in for a warning chat, and advised him the MSNBC can't afford another moronic wisecrack. Or maybe some MSNBC lawyer has Olbermann wired to an electric shock device, and whenever Keith gets that look in his eye, the lawyer jolts him enough to lock his jaw. The next time we hear an obvious setup line for Olbermann to snark at, see if he startles just a little bit.

oh Chris, you drooling bastard

"MATTHEWS: No, seriously. It's a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics."

Has nothing to do with politics? You've got to be kidding me?

This guy is a Democrat

This guy is a Democrat groupie who gets adolescent crushes on handsome Democrat men.  He drooled over Clinton like he was playmate of the decade, and now he's doing it over Obama...  What a nutcase...

If Chris had any brains,

If Chris had any brains, he'd be embarrassed to say that on the air. And I don't mean because it shows his bias.

Sheesh.

I felt this thrill going up my leg

It's a good thing the libs don't have a problem with this type.

I'm just glad he didn't go in to where the thrill finally ended or what happened thereafter.

Haven't you been listening

Has nothing to do with politics? You've got to be kidding me? -dronetek

Haven't you been listening to Obama? He says this is beyond politics, this is the new kind of coming together, a new kind of conversation...a reaching out, a coming together...oh, I'm sorry, already said that..

..he is going to be kind of the biblical "repairer of the breach"....

<sarc off>

I guess Obama isn't going to get involved in any of that "political" stuff if he is elected; he's just going to go around the country "inspiring" people. Maybe he should just be the "National Orator."

KC makes a great point

Olberman apparently has been promoted to head of MSNBC a few weeks ago. And since then he has been surprisingly sedate...maybe even sedated.

Lack of control...

I love it!!! I have thought the same thing-Matthews just can't seem to control himself...neither does it seem, can the rest of the Katzenjammer Kids at MSNBC. They all seem to be suffering from diarrhea of the mouth. Despite being nauseatingly annoying, moments like last night are good for a laugh.

Matthews is still what he

Matthews is still what he is--not sure how to describe it.  Does it not occur to him Obama couldn't even support the LIVE baby act?

Killing babies is okay since he can speak?  He certainly doesn't speak about his record and his true void of character.  Matthews is like a silly little child reveling in joy over an ice cream cone.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

EEWWWW!!!!!!!!!!

And the feeling........

reaches his "brain" before his stomach.

His Brain?

I doubt if it is reaching his brain. That feeling doesn't usually go to the brain.

It's a little revolted that he gets it just listening to Obama though.

What next, does he scream and faint?

Heard that he hasn't had this happen since Rosie was on The View or when Cindy Sheehan was meeting his Uncle Hugo.

I wonder if he and Brian Williams take turns with the Che-Fidel costumes during their bonding sessions.

I wonder what kind of high heels Chris wears under the desk.  Is this supposed to be the best the MSM turns out.  God where are the men?  Nothing wrong with liking Obamas speech, but , this guy sounds like a 15 year old girl at a Green Day Concert

A Good Line?

For creepy people maybe.

I find it hard to believe that he can feel anything other than his nose in Obama's butt.

Rooting

The blatant rooting for Obama on that network is unbelievable.  Sure Fox is conservative but I don't see the same type of coverage over there...Is MSNBC a news organization or a high school glee club singing the Obama opera and the Hillary Blues ?  Once Obama is the nominee and they drop any admiration for McCain (it's already started) , expect more "Shuster" type events from the cheerleading section...oops I mean the news department.

The torch has been passed

Congratulations Chris Matthews, you are the new Dan Rather.

What a flamer!

Going Down

I'm scared to think what's going down his leg.

As a man, I am not even sure

As a man, I am not even sure how to address this.  What the hell is the matter with Matthews?  Well, I reckon that answers a ton of questions. As Inspector Clouseau would have said "Case sol_ved!"

Where's the beef?

Matthews behaves much like Campbell Brown --- an
over-enthusiastic puppy that spends the evening humping the legs of the
guests.

He has no substance, so he gets excited about substance-less politicians and empty agendas.

But
he's a sample of the Obama following. Rarely has a politicians
been able to generate so much support with so little specifics.
His agenda would make even socialists blush, but I've yet to hear him
mention dollars, and no one apparently has pressured him to.

That
has to frustrate the Clintonistas, not that they're much better.
They probably realize now that in a race between two candidates
with similar agendas, charisma is the tie-breaker, and she ain't got it.

They
also realize that much of Obama's supports from people like Matthews
--- non-critical thinkers who get feelings up their legs at the sound
of his voice.

This is turning out to be an interesting race, for a change. :-)

the "man-crush" is now approaching larry craig-like proportions

Sorry, Chris any claims you try to make toward objectivity have sailed, ... or run down your leg.

n 2002, as an Illinois legislator, Obama voted against the Induced
Infant Liability Act, which would have protected babies that survived
late-term abortions. That same year a similar federal law, the Born
Alive Infant Protection Act, was signed by President Bush. Only 15
members of the U.S. House opposed it, and it passed the Senate
unanimously on a voice vote.

Chris's comments are very

Chris's comments are very important:
1. "He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country."

Yes! This is the way the findamental difference between how democrats view the world vs. how the world IS...which is how republicans view the world. Democrats get excited about personalities, emotions, fantasies, dreams. They are desperate to follow someone who inspires them, probably because their own lives are so empty, though that's not true all the time. They don't care about facts and analysis and truth. This is also why the lefties malign truth as a false concept, i.e., "there is no truth."

This also explains why they react so viscerally towards people they disagree with. They can't just disagree and shake hands; they often hate. For example, Bush didn't just get us into Iraq based on flawed intelligence; he lied. (Btw, did anyone see Hillary's explanation in the CA debate on why she voted to use force in Iraq? She said anyone looking at the intelligence would have voted with Bush. How did that get by the press?) It's why all these hate groups like the Michael Moores have risen up.

2. "And that is an objective assessment."

No person providing a personal opinion can say his statement is objective until he tests it vs. the facts. Again, Chris, who is liberal, is completely caught up in his emotions. This is a republic we're running here; a serious thing that can't be trusted to people who lead by emotions, feelings, etc.

Chris Matthews Pimping for Obama

Chris....what you felt on your leg was your own drool coming outta your mouth...  What's next?  Are you gonna tell us Obama gives you a "chubby?"

Can we expect Chris to toss

Can we expect Chris to toss his panties on stage the next time His Obamaness uses the mere power of his vapid speeches to cure cancer, make the blind see and allow us to put metal in the microwave?

Matthews is nothing more

Matthews is nothing more than a "dirty old man", he gives me the creeps. He sets my hair and teeth on edge. Yuk.
