It’s really, really hard for many in the media to put politics aside, even when asking the president questions about the coronavirus. That was obvious during today’s press conference where President Trump fielded condescending questions from reporters questioning his credibility, and if his supporters actually follow medical advice.
The CBS and NBC evening newscasts on Thursday complained about Donald Trump’s reaction to his impeachment acquittal. CBS called it a “stark contrast” to the dignified response by Bill Clinton. NBC fretted that the President “shattered the bipartisan tradition” of the National Prayer Breakfast. (Forgetting that Obama mixed politics too.)
What was going on CBS Tuesday night during the State of the Union? In their post-speech reactions, CBS journalists praised the “master showman” President’s “incredible remarks” that, while “restrained,” showcased “a strong record on the economy” and “emotionally compelling stories” about “great Americans.” Even more surprisingly, the praise was juxtaposed with condemnation for Democrats.
Ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, Gallup, a polling service often cited by the media, released their latest findings that showed the President’s approval rating hitting a new record high of 49 percent (highest ever from Gallup), despite the impeachment trial. It was an inconvenient truth that ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC Nightly News refused to report during their evening newscasts ahead of the address.
The Department of Justice Inspector General’s report clearly spelled out gross abuses by the FBI when applying to spy on members of the Trump campaign. Despite those facts, ABC’s World News Tonight and CBS Evening News were clutching their pearls Tuesday while reporting on how President Trump and Attorney General William Barr were slamming the law enforcement organization for lying and misleading the FISA courts.
Following a Thursday report pushing Democratic Party concerns about Senate Republicans having lunch at the White House to discuss impeachment, CBS White House correspondent Ben Tracy shared additional concerns that an impeachment trial in the Senate could keep Democratic candidates off the campaign trail. But the larger problem that didn’t seem to cross his mind, was the fact that President Trump’s 2020 opponents would be voting to remove him from office.
Despite how they were dismissive of his truthfulness prior to Wednesday and the fact that he could not directly implicate President Trump in a quid pro quo scheme with Ukraine, ABC, CBS, and NBC heralded the public testimony of E.U. Ambassador Gordon Sondland as a “bombshell” from “the most pivotal witness yet.”
The same networks that banded together to bully pro-life states earlier this year after they passed sweeping legislation to protect the life of unborn children, spent Wednesday evening whining about President Trump threatening to revoke California’s self-prescribed emissions standards in favor of a national standard.
On Wednesday, all three network morning shows wailed about President Trump daring to criticize former Democratic Congressman and 2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke. However, none of broadcasts had any problem with the wildly irresponsible rhetoric that O’Rourke and other Democrats have employed since the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio over the weekend.
At a joint press conference in London on Tuesday, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May thanked President Trump for putting pressure on the NATO members who were not paying what they agreed to and getting results. But instead of the reporting on that praise during their evening newscasts, the liberal broadcast networks chose to hype anti-Trump protesters, including an effigy of him on the toilet, and acted shocked that Trump would complement his hosts.
This week, CBS This Morning has explored motherhood around the world, gushing about how other countries do things better than the United States. On Tuesday, the show touted all the free stuff Finland gives out, ignoring the country’s high taxes. On Thursday, the CBS journalists cheered China’s handling of raising children. At no time did reporter Ben Tracy mention the country’s authoritarian government or the millions of forced abortions as a result of its one child policy.
After NBC took to Twitter over the weekend to tout how it was “so satisfying to watch” the North Korean cheerleading squad (before deleting it), Monday’s NBC Nightly News danced around and largely voided the reason the squad was there and what their actual purpose was. In contrast, CBS Evening News highlighted the outrage against the group and the dark reason they were performing.
