The morning after the midterms, the media was busy celebrating Democrats winning the majority in the House of Representatives. Despite this win, many of the media-hyped Democrats running for office lost their races last night, much to the chagrin of the news media who blamed everything from racism to voter fraud. But over on Good Morning America, ABC tried to spin Ted Cruz’s win over media heartthrob Beto O’Rourke in Texas as a sign of “hope” for 2020.
The hype started way back in February when the New York Times’s Michael Tackett fantasized about Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke’s campaign embodying “a sense of the possible.” The “Turning Texas Blue” dream continued with Late Show host Stephen Colbert, in March, proclaiming: “Texas might be feeling the Beto-mentum, because so far this year, O’Rourke out-raised Ted Cruz by $1.5 million.” The following is just a sampling of the out-of-control media love for Beto O’Rourke and his Quixotic attempt to turn Texas blue.
ABC journalists on election night gushed over Beto O’Rourke as the second coming of Bobby Kennedy, and as a Democrat who had “electrified” Texas. Meanwhile, as Republicans pulled ahead in Florida, Tennessee and Indiana Senate races, former Democratic operative turned journalist George Stephanopoulos admitted this has been a “disappointing night” for Democrats “so far.”
The New York Times hit the campaign trail around the country over the weekend and offered several dispatches, including the strikingly titled “A purple flying unicorn discovered in Texas” from reporters Manny Fernandez and Mitchell Ferman. The paper’s hostility to incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is well-documented, so Fernandez’s loaded name-calling wasn’t surprising, but it was odd that he conveniently found on the spot an undocumented “unusual phenomenon” of Republican Cruz-haters that are putting his re-election in jeopardy.
As the midterm elections approach, TV news hosts have abdicated their role as reporters to become partisan cheerleaders, inundating the airwaves with portrayals of Democratic candidates as lovable celebrities. The same media who relentlessly hammered Republicans with 88-percent negative midterm coverage have stubbornly refused to cover Democratic scandals, while praising their favorite candidates as “rock stars.”
Imagine your worst expectations for MSNBC’s Hardball giving Democratic Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke his own town hall Tuesday at the University of Houston. Sadly, whatever came to mind probably couldn’t match reality. All told, the hour-long event featured comparisons between O’Rourke and Bobby Kennedy, questions about supporting the liberal media, and even his sleep habits. And, most notably, there was nary a question or mention by host Chris Matthews or any of the audience members about O’Rourke’s drunk driving incident or recent news about his father’s financial dealings.
With just one week to go before the 2018 midterm elections, the broadcast networks are heavily spinning their campaign coverage against the Republicans, even as President Trump’s campaign activities have received more airtime than all of the individual Senate, House, and gubernatorial contests combined.
Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke has touted the fact that he is supported by his own mother. He has falsely claimed that she was a “lifelong Republican” before his candidacy. But as CNN points out, his mother has actually “voted in Democratic primaries in 15 of the last 17 primary elections she has participated” in, including Democratic presidential primaries “in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016.” She also made campaign contributions to Democratic politicians such as Barack Obama and Congressional candidate Veronica Escobar.
On his 3:00 p.m. ET hour show on Monday, MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi eagerly touted the “real possibility” that Texas Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke “could win a shocking upset next Tuesday” against incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz. However, in the segment that followed, the host worried that all the “national attention” O’Rourke was receiving from the media wasn’t translating into votes.
Journalists just cannot contain their excitement over Beto O'Rourke and the possibility of turning Texas into a Democratic stronghold. Despite the fact that O'Rourke has NEVER LED in a single poll, reporters have decided this is the year. Appearing on Nightline, Monday, ABC News political reporter Rick Klein enthused, “The idea that Texas is ripe for the picking, it's powered by the growing minority population, the growing young voter population.”
With the midterm elections just two weeks away, the liberal media have ramped up their efforts to drag their dreamboat, Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke over the finish line in the Texas Senate race. With President Trump’s visit to campaign for Senator Ted Cruz (R) on Monday, the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) seized on the opportunity boast about Beto’s qualities while downplaying his poor poll numbers.
You know how a girl, when she really likes a boy, will nervously brush her hair back? Check out the move of ABC reporter Paula Faris as she gushes to Beto O'Rourke: "you're a rock star!" When Beto demurs, Faris insists: "no, you really are!" Faris did stop short of asking Beto to autograph her arm, but the adoration was unmistakable.
